Not wanting to be the doom monger, but genuinely does anyone else have that horrible uneasy feeling that... this is it in terms of how far FDev can push the game within its current confines?

I have hope that more is yet to come in the next 5 years of the ten year planning. FD had said that they were working on new milestones and it was implied that some part of FD had been already working on new things for post-Beyond before the 3.3 beta. And that it wouldn't be announced until it was in a ready enough state to do so.

When they are ready to reveal one they will.
I suppose they’ll tell us when they actually know what it’s going to be themselves.
Or when they need to quickly sweep some other blunder under the rug of page 2 of DDF.
Look at it this way, if they haven't said anything by the end of Feb, it's probably not coming in this half of the year. They've favoured a 4-month hype cycle in the past, more or less.
Which bit is tickling you? The idea of a paid expansion? Or the fact that they've announced one?

EDIT: And no, not really. I get the feeling they're working on a technical expansion, in line with their old big pillar additions from Kickstarter. IE Atmos and/or Legs aspects etc. It's not beyond the realms of possibility

I am VERY confident there will be more from the elite franchise.... what form this will take i have no idea... hopefully we will hear more at some point in these "FD birthday celebrations" - probably near the end.
At this point i almost wish they would bring out a separate game, with separate CMDR slot, let the current ED be the pure MMO sandbox it is heading too, and the other game be a more SCI-FI RPG which is not limited by multiplayer MMO stuff. (it would be nice to play with a handful of friends however in some way)... probably both games sharing the same galaxy sim to minimise expense. (LTP owners to get it free of course). Where possible new content goes into both games BUT neither game gets held back because "X feature does not fit in with one of the games".
There is so much bickering between us lot on here and it is sad really given we are all space game fans, but many of us want such polar opposites from the game i do not think that 1 game can cater to all of us - what 1 group wants breaks the game for another... and these days it is not even as simple as 2 groups of people.
that would be my dream announcement but i am not expecting that.

Pretty much. They’ve had plenty of time/money. If they can’t give us atmo now, they really have no more excuses. Even the usual apologists will have trouble with that one.

It isn't wrong demand a bit of communication.
My feeling we're back in the poor communication mode by FD.
For example no GalNet News since 11.12.18 and no news about the next patch. Furthermore no news about the DLC for 2019.
The anniversary month would be a good time tell something about the future plans to the community, even if this would fuel the hype which might not be desirable yet. It would also be a good time to shed some light on various things people have speculated on for years. The Cobra engine must have been a bit difficult, and time consuming, to work with lately, and maybe technical limitations are dictating the course of development, but we already know that so no need to focus on that.
I don't believe there will be any DLC until the end of the year, if at all.
Beyond was the last big push for ED and ED is no longer FDev's most important objective with new IPs coming.
If sales fall, that may spur something but otherwise, I think what we have now is probably about all we're going to get.
