PSA: Enough with the ad-hominem attacks!

It really doesn't add anything to an argument and makes the presented position seem childish.

Try it! Avoid using ad-hominem attacks and see how much better discussions become.

The meaning of ad-hominem attacks may be misunderstood.
Here are some tips that should be followed.

If the OP is insulted it's an ad-hominem attack.
If a poster is insulted it's an ad-hominem attack.
If an individual or individuals in the first, second, third, first plural, second plural, third plural person is referenced, it's probably an ad-hominem attack.
If a real person is inferred it's probably an ad-hominem attack
If a real individual or individual(s) is(are) referred to in any shape or form, even in insinuation in a reply, it's probably an ad-hominem attack. Because nobody (or maybe almost nobody) here says anything nice.

I said "you!!!!!" See what I mean? Avoid things like that. It's probably an ad-hominem attack. Just don't do it.

Just feeling insulted does not an ad hominem attack make. An ad hominem is a character judgement in lieu of an argument, or as a replacement for an argument.

If someone provides an argument or criticism, and includes an insult, it's just an insult, not an ad hominem, and "i'm offended/insulted" is not an argument. If someone is insulted, it might just mean they're weak-willed and need to HTFU.

some people get easily offended. By OP definition it is hard to predict when An Hominim can happen

(and it is silly to be offended by something you read on the internet anyway)

That is not a list of ad-hominem attack criteria. It is a minefield of political correctness.

Since you aren't aware of what an ad-hom attack is there's no chance of you getting them to end.

We only need to deal with one to to dismiss your entire post. So item 1) If i say "religion is silly" and you being religious feel insulted that's not an ad-hom attack, because the remark was directed towards the idea of religion, not towards the person. Just think if it as it's fine to attack ideas but not fine to attack people. The fact that the person has taken insult at a comment doesn't automatically make it an ad-hom attack, I would need to direct it at the person. So I would need to say X person is silly, but if I say to a person who puts forward an idea that idea Y is silly that's not an ad-hom attack.

The idea that if a person is offended it automatically makes it an ad-hom attack is the basis for blasphemy laws. If I attack your idea and you take offense then you are at fault, not me.

I dont mind Ad Hominem attacks, I enjoy the banter. I'm British. We do it all day, every day, to any and everyone. Just for a laugh. We even do it to ourselves.
