Calling all miner 69ers...

...I'm looking for tips and guides for mining. I don't think I've mined anything in this game, so I'd like to know what pieces of kit are optional/compulsory etc. And any info on how/where to look for them Void Opals. Dunno if people keep locations secret though, so feel free to tell me to mined my own business. (yes. Yes I did)

Bonus points for getting the title reference.

Edit: If possible will be searching away from inhabited space ;)

fit DSS, refinery, seismic charge launcher, abrasion blaster, cargo rack,
don't forget limpets
fly to system with rings
scan for ice rings with DS
DSS ice ring for hot spots
fly into void opal hot spot
find core asteroid
fire seismic charge at 'roid till it gives up
fire abrasion blaster at deposits
scoop fragments
...
profit

Straight to the point. Love it! Thanks :)

Well firstly, pick a ship.
Python is good, Anaconda is better, and able to shoot back, but less agile, if you can afford it.

Then pick whether you're core only mining, or strip mining.

For core only, you need an Abrasion Blaster, and Seismic Charge Launcher (or two).
Subsurface missiles are optional.
For strip mining, you need mining lasers, and subsurface missiles.

For core only, out only need a 2A refinery. For strip mining, 4A.

Either way, you need a good amount of collection limpets.
My Anaconda controls 7 limpets. (2x class 5, 1x class 3).
You'll need a class 1 prospector limpet.

Fit shield boosters, and don't forget your pulse wave scanner (utility).

Loads of cargo space, and a good shield.

You'll also need a Detailed Surface Scanner, for probing rings.

Weapons are handy, but optional.

Do not forget limpets! Fill about 2/3 of your hold.

I mine in LFT 65. Planet 1.
You'll need to fly over and probe the rings to find a Void Opal hotspot.

Then drop on, but not at the centre. It's probably well mined. I usually drop 1-4Mm out.
Pirates may spawn. Ignore them, you're not carrying anything.

Then ping your PWS looking for bright yellow rocks.
Prospect any that look very bright, and "medium sized".
If it has fissures, for core only mining, target each one, look for a low strength and slap a high yield charge in it (press and hold to charge).
Check the graph in the top right.
Then slap in more charges in different fissures until you're in the blue.
If you hit the red, disarm one, and try again.

Then back off about 1-2km, and detonate.
Then scoop all the goodies, and using the abrasion blaster to chip off surface deposits.

Profit.

Do not log out, or supercruise to another spot with cargo, as pirates will spawn and blow you up. Lol

Edit.
Is reference from 7 Days To Die, or are they referencing something else, and I lead a sad and uneducated life? :p

Here... my multipurpose runabout refitted for Core mining, has all you need to locate hotspots, crack open cores, collect & store enough high value gemcores for 40 million credits haul per run, and a fighter escort to earn bounty credits while ignoring pirates:

I guess you feel yourself pretty lonely in the void with such sensor, don't you?..

Some top tips.

What's your budget?
What do you like doing?
Do you fly FA Off?
VR?
Do you like a challenge?

I am fairly new to mining myself. The new blow-up-able rocks are a blast!
I get a lot of joy from using small ships. Started in a Viper4, with only 32 tonnes of cargo, no room for collector limpets. But great fun.

Recently 'downgraded' to DBS which I have let Farseer upgrade to standard lvl3 engines only. Have to run shield-less and only 16 tonnes plus the 8 in the refinery. Also no scanner to locate hotspots. Doesn't matter, ice ring yield big time! I love having to think about situational awareness, avoiding the debris!

Great stuff!!!

Well, I'm not going out popping rocks to meet people. If someone is more than 5km away... they're of no interest to me. Once they get within APA range however...

Orca ----> look for black bits on the rocks ---> BOOM Credits

Why an orca? 128T, 550m/s maneuverable whale with a wonderful view (looks nice & has a swimming pool on deck 3)

7 days to die indeed! Well played! :)

Thanks for all the replies, guys. Seems a lot to soak in!

Krait familiy is very nice for mining. Actually, now that I think of it Kraits are great at everything..

Hotspots everywhere. I mine in Shinrarta, body AB1. Comfortable mining one block away from home.

Sometimes it’s important to have good jump range. Once in a while opal market is 150 l.y. away.

Woohoo, I know things!

If you're core mining, don't pass up on Low Temperature Diamonds, they sell for just under 1m / tonne. Or did when I was mining a few weeks ago.
Either way, good money.

Use inara.cz to look up the best sale values on any ores you find. There are only two or three good ones in ice rings.
VOs, LTDs, and I think something called grandadrite or something. Lol
You can safely ignore the rest, especially if you went for a smaller refinery.

From this board:

From ships to equipment to procedures to multiplayer... it's all in there^

Glad to see my brainchild is still seeing use. :)

Well, I haven't touched all that much on 'where to find void opals' and rather focused on how to mine anything, granted.
Also, I feel the 'where to find void opals' is a moving target if one is in the bubble.

Buuuuut here's a wee trick: focus on ice belts, don't be overly worried about it being pristine or not, and core rocks will tend to look like a pile of grapes.

My only additional piece of advice

Pick any ring (with hotspots) with a station right next door to start with.

The first time you try I guarantee you'll waste a whole bunch of limpets until you get the knack of whats going on. Knowing the difference between glowing gold and glowing yellow takes a bit of getting used to and the process of setting charges while circling an asteroid takes a couple of times to get right. I found by the time I got everything right I had used up most of my limpets and needing to head back.

I really enjoy mining now - I've not even looked for void opels as my bank balance is fairly healthy. I just enjoy blowing up big rocks

Ships? I've got an Orca set up as my fast, agile core hunter and a T10 because it was born to be a big heavy mining beast...

P.S.- (don't forget your limpets - say this 50 times at least before you think of pressing launch)

P.P.S - You will at some point forget your limpets.

Hah, my most memorable mining mistake (alliteration, woo!) involved a newly-fitted mining python. bravely took my limpets to a belt... And after firing my lasers I realized I had equipped hatch breakers instead of collector limpets.

Back to base for a refit.

So yeah, practice near a station for that maiden flight. Good tip. :)

Limpets aren't that bad, you can synthesize some to at least scoop one core rock.

But imagine my dread as I realized my "fully outfitted" mining Corvette had no refinery :x[knocked out]

Needless to say I realized after finding and blasting a core rock :D
