Oculus : how do I see my HOTAS or KB ?

Has someone already answered this as I can't find it ?
I am thinking of buying the consumer version of the OR when it comes out, but it suddenly hit me , how do I see the outside world, like my HOTAS or keyboard ? does the OR have a camera for this ? or will it ?

You an look down the nose hole......so they say but it don't work well.
With a well setup HOTAS without VA you don't really need it. (comms is a different matter (touch type))
There is talk of camera setup but that sounds expensive both in price and GPU.

Well you don't. Have to set up HOTAS so you have everything at your fingertips, otherwise you either have to peak from under the Rift, or have to find you way on keyboard by touch.

Camera is not the best solution imo. They need to combine Leap Motion technology with Rift. That way you will be able to interact with VR cockpit, not keyboard.

I use a Joystic and can do everything without keyboard.
No need to look at anything.

I am very happy for you, now back on topic , ok guys I see what you're saying but I have no extra buttons on my X52pro as all are assigned, and i DO NEED to use the keyboard, I guess I am fooooked ?

TrackIR suddenly looks very inviting !

Are you sure all buttons are used. You do know you can use one button as a shift key. I use an xbox controller too as new features arrive I add them to that till I decide the best place for it on the stick.

Learn to touch type, then as long as you can find the home keys on the keyboard (simple enough) you're golden.

Or use something like VoiceAttack, that would work too.

Spend £5 on Voice attack and get a microphone. You can then bind any keyboard commands to a spoken phrase. eg when I say "ship deploy guns", my hard points come out.

When my Rift arrives I will be limited to voice comms only with this set up, but if I find the rift is as good as people say then this will be a price I am willing to pay.

I have paid for VA, but that can't type comms messages can it ?
I will see what OR will come out with and as you said, if OR is that good then we might have to live with it :(

Surely you put the joystick in the same position as the virtual joystick in the game. Throttle's are either attached to that, so no problem, or separate and then you put that where the virtual throttle is. If you put your keyboard in a position relative to the joystick then you would know where it is easily. But that doesn't really help you chat unless you can touch type.

I hope they have some kind of sticker you can mark peripherals with so that when the OR has camera it picks up their position and renders them in the game.

Or a lower tech method would be a list of common peripherals you can pick from and then the game renders them and, again, you move the real ones to be in the same position as the virtual ones.

I use Voice Attack and tell the ship's computer what to do. I don't need the KB at all.

To request docking I simple say: 'request docking'

To set up ship-to-ship comms I simply say: 'Open a channel'

More power to engines? Simply tell the computer what to do.

Besides using a Hotas, I can use the keyboard and mouse just fine. I could peek down the nosehole, but it's not really necessary.

I usually watch the screen when typing anyway and hardly ever look at the keyboard.

For those that don't do that already, there's also a VR typing trainer on the oculus site.

You get used to it pretty easily and if you just always put things in the same place, there's no need to look at them. I can pour in a glass of wine, drink, light and smoke a cigar and eat snacks all while wearing the rift without any problem whastoever.

Each to their own, but Voice Attack for me is the only realistic solution to this.

You bought VR because you want to be enclosed in a virtual cockpit & not see anything else besides the game.

You want to see your controls to actually control said game.

These goals are fundamentally incompatible with each other.

Only way is to either go down the Leap Motion route (and we're a way away from that IMO), fumble in the dark with your hands as it were, or use VA for as many ship functions as you possibly can.

Before using voice attack I set all the buttons around the "W" key, you can also repeat the buttons for other needs like the galaxy map.
After on the W key I GLUE/STICKED a piece of plastic so that when I hoover my hand on the keyboard I could find it:p

I Use a Microsoft Sidewinder2, never took down the hands from the stick, and I'm still doing fine................I have also VA now:p

There is a FREE program called FacetrackNoIR. It uses any Webcam and tracks your face. I've used it with two webcams, and there is a noticeable difference in performance between an old one and a new HD one. Check out some YouTube videos on it.

I see your points guys, but I have 20 functions mapped to my joystick(not including the joystick itself) and about 11 to my throttle(again not including throttle) .

What I am trying to say is that I am old and smell of wee :D so I do need to look at my HOTAS sometimes, to see where the buttons are(also I have ID stickers on them :)

yuo are so cute!
why don't you try to hit the keyboard with your head; sometimes it works.

you can't, hence why you should invest in a HOTAS with as many buttons/hats as posssible that won't break your bank account.
ok maybe should've looked at last page before posting, erm how have you managed to use all your x52pro buttons?
anyway try voice attack.
also look at EDtracker for headlook option, made by 3 members of these very same forums.

If you need to look at your peripherals to remember your bindings you may want to reconsider how you do your layout.

Not as a judgement of how you play, but of practicality. It's always been my experience that if the controls don't feel intuitive enough that you can memorize them in a few hours and no longer need to visually confirm the position of your hand or the location of the key/button you're looking for, that there is a better and more natural layout for you.

I can fiddle with key bindings for weeks before I get a game feeling 100% Keep experimenting.
