PvP What are good starter ships and good weapon loadouts?

I tried the Vulture with one PA and one fixed beam in the other hardpoint slot, and the heat was not an issue. Later, I tried dual unengineered PAs and it started overheating. I have a focused PA that I’ve moved around between my PvE ships, and I was able to keep the ship visible on the screen and land more shots. But...setting up the ship for PvP, I’ve had to overcharge the power plant, which makes it run hotter. What would a good hardpoint loadout be for a a Vulture, when it gets kind of toasty when fitted for PvP?

Another ship that I own, that sounds fun for PvP is the Cobra Mk III. I have one that I’ve outfitted with drag drives and bi-weaves and use it mostly for mat gathering and a bit of PvE, and I’ve always had fun in that ship. With the hardpoint convergence, if I have dual fixed weapons, it feels like I’m spending more time lining up shots than firing them. I see some pretty well-known PvPers with the Cobra Mk III, so it obviously can be a good PvP ship. What is a good hardpoint loadout for that ship?

Other ships I’m looking into are the Viper Mk 3 and Viper Mk 4. What are good weapons for those? I’ve mostly used gimbals for PvE (gimballed multi-cannons and pulse lasers), but NPCs don’t spam chaff like commanders do, and I want to get better at fixed weapons.

I put dual efficient PAs on my Vulture and have no problems with over heating. I have no experience in the Cobra.

Sidey, Adder, Cobra, AspX...

Try beams and multi canons, use the larger slots for the Multis.

Vulture is very good, but IMO common duel efficient plasma lacks punch, try to mod one of your PA to short range blaster(extra 75% dmg for bigger heat), it should still be manageable for your distributor but packs much more punch, you should sacrifice one of experimentals for thermal conduit too, if your build use overcharged plant. You are welcome:)

I´ll once again plug the Viper MK3. Its sort of canon for beginner PvP. Terrific little battleship. Very good lateral movement. Fast. Smol hitbox. Rebuy is less than most ships repair bill. The Vulture is a terrific ship on its own. I, personally, find the 2 hardpoints a bit limiting. With the Viper you can try how the PA/Rail meta feels, use mines, seekers and all sorts of fun and gimmicky loadouts.

If you´re new to fixed weapons try smth like this: https://edshipyard.net/builds/3gb

You´ll learn to evade, manage pips and learn PAs while still being able to destroy Elite NPC Anacondas with only the laser turrets when in training or lazy mode.

The Viper is a hulltank by DNA. I´m still using a c1 prismatic. It will save your hull and modules from the first volley and be back up again in 35 seconds or so. Had opponents and wingmates wondering about my "amazing shields", even when they were not engineered. You can start unengineered and go vs NPCs to get a feel for the ship and build it slowly while getting better. When you progress and start landing more and more PA volleys go try a Chieftain with PAs and you´ll find landing shots a walk in the park. The Chief is pretty much the PvP Meta ship right after the FDL and going Viper --> Chief felt like natural progression for me.

I’d consider myself adept at PvE combat. I know that doesn’t mean much but I mention it because I think I’m decent enough at flying and maneuvering to bypass the “beginner” ships like the Viper mk 3. I also have billions of credits and a large fleet so I’m not concerned about purchase price or rebuy costs.

My question, in light of the above, is whether it would be foolish to attempt PvP in the kinds of ships I use for PvE? I’m not referencing builds or load outs. Rather, I’m talking strictly about ship type. Should I not use a python, anaconda, or corvette? Should I start with an FDL, FAS or one of the alliance ships? Or is that asking for trouble?

If so, and it’s smart to get used to pVP in a smaller ship, what about the Courier?

I'm not sure he gives a meta vulture loadout. This is close:

It's non optimal, because it has no chaff, and will get dunked by anyone with gimbals, but I just operate under the assumption all the PS4 PvP guys I pull are obsessed with fixed aim and won't carry gimbals for moral reasons.

I like starting in vulture because it's way cheaper rebuy than FdL, but way more DPS than courier/viper.

Saying that vulture have "way more DPS" than any 2s2m hardpoint ship is overstatement, but definitely vulture have more firepower than courier(both number of guns and better convergence) In small ship pvp unlike in Pve build diversity have huge affect on combat. Recently i was fighting same pilot in same MC gimbal courier, first in eff+sr bi+SCB Vulture with 1chaff then in bi DBS with 2xsr PA+2x gimbal MC, and quite surprisingly DBS had easier time defeating courier than Vulture. I would love to see vulture vs viper or DBS fight, on paper vulture is big favourite, but in reality creative hardpoint lodout can make a difference against vulture (not talking counter builds)
It was a bit of topic, and against what i said earlier i would definitely recommend vulture as starter pvp ship. expandable and with better chances beating medium PVP ships than rest of small ships.

Hey man, down get me wrong i love the courier

i once took down a python in a my phasing courier and it took 32 minutes

So we can quibble whether it's "way" or "moderately" or whatever regarding DPS

But vulture has size 5 distro and courier has size 3 so pretty much no argument which can dish out murder more quickly

Anyway OP should read that linked doc, it's good stuff, better than anything imma type here

Vipers are the best combat ships. Period.

gIt gUd you sCrUuUuUbS!!!!

(No seriously, it's true, it has the best profile, it has the best acceleration and it has damn near the best laterals with one of the highest possible boost speeds, not of selectively the small ships either. All the ships)

No. Do not do this.

Sorry John, but that is selectively a PvE loadout. You will not be killing folk in serious PvP with beams. You might as well try to tickle them to death.

Also, most of those ships (Winder ex' because Archon Fury), are sub par at best.

The Adder is made of jello. The Cobra is slow to accelerate, has no lateral thrust or yaw. The Asp.. I don't think I need to say anything on that one. Gank magnet.

Im new to pvp. Are you saying beam lasers do nothing?

Pretty much.

Most ships have between 35% and 50% resistance values against Thermic weaponry.

Also beams have a falloff of 0.5km, a distance you are seldom under for more thana second in PvP.

Also ToT weaponry is typically far less efficient vs players than burst damage weapons.

With the small ships abysmal DPS and small distributors, beams are not viable for PVP at all.

2 Efficient Plasma 2 Railguns is a good loadout for pvp on the viper 3 and 4. You can also run 2 enforcers and 2 class 2 overcharged multicannons. Quad rails are hard to use and you end up frying yourself in the long run.

A beam/Multi combo might be half decent for a PVE scenario, but considering few actually fly small ships in PVP, you have to use high dps weapons to bridge the gap.

Yup. Spot on.

Rails + Pa's/Cannons.

Everything else is pretty sub par unless you're super accurate or have a million reloads.

The only time I've ever used a beam in PvP is on an Eagle. (Thermal vent Exp'). I can run at less than 5% heat for an entire engagement and in a wing that can be a total blessing and go some way to give the Eagle time to make up for it's crappy damage with ToT. But i would'nt reccoment trying it on ships with higher BTU thresholds.

If you really want to use lasers, go with LR/Foc' Pulses.

I've won a lot of duels in my Viper (vs Vultures). There's just something about that ship.
