So what happens next? 2019 updates

I really wish we knew. Since the next expansion has been in full production for some time now, they obviously have a good idea of what it will entail. We don't need specifics, how about just a cool promo image and a very brief overview of what we're getting?

What happens next?

More bugs of course. Only this time they expect you to pay to enjoy them.

And when you finally get frustrated enough that you start calling for fixes, some new "generation" of twits will be asking "what's next" as if we don't already know.

Can I get one of those forum bingo cards and fill it up completely with variations of 'what's beyond beyond?' I feel I'd be onto a sure winner.

When I read some of these posts in a thread who's title I thought might provide some genuinely interesting ideas to read, I have to remind myself that anonymous complaining into the void is one of the primary function of forums.
There should probably be a disclaimer. Caution: venting ahead.
I don't have any 'wants' about the next updates. But I am very interested to see what they contain and how many floppy disks are needed.
So you thought you'd join the cacophany of complaining rather than add an interesting idea? Welcome to the Elite Cult then I guess - 'One of us, one of us...'

Shouldnt we be expecting fleet carriers to be around the corner (however far away that corner is)?
No, Fleets may be coming in some future update was the last official proclamation on their fate. Ice world improvements are being rolled into the future update tho in the new era of Elite. The scatter rock technology that was discussed has become a non subject and never spoken of.

Sorry, noob question. How often are the updates? Are they yearly? The game just had one so do we have to wait until next year for the next one?

The most recent major update was 3.3 on 11th December 2018. There have been three minor updates since: 3.3.01 before Xmas; 3.3.02 and 3.3.03 in Jan 2019.

Previously, the longest interim between major updates was 5½ months, from 2.2 to 2.3.

That's a good question to which nobody on this forum can give a definitive answer. The first 'Season' was Horizons. Many expected it to be released over a one year period with 4 parts to the 'season'. Due to delays/technical difficulties it actually took about 15 or 16 months I think. There was then a short break. During this time FD announced they were not going to use the 'Season' model anymore but embarked on a year of updates 'Beyond' that would be released in 4 parts over a single year. They managed to keep this schedule (although it did lose some features along the way probably due to time/technical constraints). We are still waiting to find out what model they intend to use and in fact what the next 'expansion/season/chapter/dlc/content update/release/insert other appropriate name/feature' will be and whether it will be a full release in one go or over time release.

Hope that clears it up for you :D

Maybe they focus on something other than combat ?

Hull damage isn't exclusively a combat thing. You don't think implementing visual damage on a SINGLE ship and then abandoning the effort says anything about the development of the game? I don't see how anyone can defend FD on this. I don't even care about visual damage but it's baffling how something like that is only present on a single ship.

I'm hoping they'll let us play cqc. The issues are that nobody wants to sit in a lobby waiting to play, so they could let us fly around an empty map while we wait. That would help. Next they need to show active games so we know which mode to join. Finally they need to tie some kind of worthwhile reward to the base game. These issues have been present since day one. They slightly fixed it recently by allowing 2 player matches, but it isnt enough.

Yeah - it says that FDev are capable of saying, "Gee this is a crap-ton of work for a feature that few people notice and doesn't change the game enough to justify the manpower being poured into it."

Prediction: We won't see physical damage on ships until after they add elite-feet and/or the ability to explore inside our ships. Once that's done the internal models will significantly reduce the effort needed to add physical damage. Conversely, any physical damage they implement now would likely need to be redone once internals were formalized. Doing damage now would be a massive waste of resources.
