Next Update = 2020

So if they're really doing this to bring big new content to the game, why wouldn't they tell us what some of that content is to keep us interested? They didn't say one word about any actual new content being developed, and that's a bit telling I think.

Insurance.

If they say what it is, they'd feel like they had to deliver on it.

But if they don't, they don't have to.

Simples, to quote Theresa May.

Having the major update in 2020 builds hope that this will be a very big release indeed. My major fear is that we will all then set our expectations too high with each of us having our favourite dream of what is to come.
Its therefore essential that sometime in the next 6 months or so Frontier need to publicise more clearly what this expansion is about, be it Elite Feet, Atmospheres or something else that few have thought about. This is just so we can at least narrow down the focus of our expectations.
Already some people are expecting a god patch that includes everything. This isnt going to happen, people need to keep it real so to speak.

This is the balancing act that FDev are going to have to try and get right almost as much as whatever the content itself may be. Say too much and simply set themselves up for a massive fall, say too little and let expectation spiral into guaranteed disappointment.

However they end up handling it they’ll be aware they can’t simply say nothing, we just don’t live in a world like that anymore.

I’m just glad I’m not an FDev Community Manager over the next two years

If anyone is planning to rage quit over this... Can I have your stuff? Just asking, in advance...
If I could give you my stuff in this multiplayer online game I would, but I can't as it's a woefully lacking multiplayer online game.

Even if I was not optimistic at all about a 2019 release, that's still a big disapointement.
I remember some guys here saying it was coming end of 2018 [haha]
Pretty sure that was an Fdev dev who said that which then got cancelled to be added to the much bigger update coming later. The people with LEP got something from the store as compensation?

Maintenance mode, MVP, New Game free to LEP owners, I'm calling it.

Wow. Pretty weak Frontier. The promised Premium Content delayed again. After being delayed again and again.
Just another announcement of another coming announcement. This one in 18 months. You have really outdone yourselves this time.
As for you LEP's Frontier just told you to go yourselves again.

It really depends on what they are working on... if it's awesome it's worth the wait!

But if it's just feels incremental, well then yeah it's too long.

Last year an FDev employee told me we hadn't see anything yet, and Beyond Chapter 4 would be awesome.

Well, I liked chapter four, in fact I liked all of the beyond updates, but non of it felt earth shattering? Felt more incremental to me.

Anyhow, time will tell!

Epic pathetic even by FD standards. When I think I supported this guys in Kickstarter after waiting for 20 years for Elite game. And 5 years later after epic fails like powerplay, engineers and impotent unimaginative design leadership they come up with this... I hope Fdev share price tanks even further. This is a slap in the face for everyone who backed this game and pulled FD from the gutter. Braben has disappointed me big time. From now on there is only one legend game designer - Sid Meier !

This is a problem with modern game development. You release a game that's unfinished, but promise that it will be. You then expect people to pay full price for the unfinished game, as well as pay for additional content which is meant to finish the game. Then you dangle carrots in front of people and give them vague ideas about what's coming, building insurmountable hype and leaving your customers inevitably disappointed.

I've had a blast with Elite Dangerous, and am by no means complaining about the delay because I am enjoying the game as it is now. All I'm saying is, Frontier is just as dishonest a company as the rest of the industry...or any industry for that matter. People are justified being upset by this news.

I chuckled, reading FDev's latest informational update noting that FDev took several paragraphs to say . . . expect exactly nothing.

No ice planets, no fleet carriers, no significant new content releases until sometime next year. New content is (reportedly) scheduled for release sometime in Q4 2020, which probably means in late December after lots of hype/buildup just like last year's thoroughly underwhelming "new" content update and in addition, we are all going to PAY for the "new" content. Way to stretch it, FDev.

And still no Panther Clipper. o7

Alpha Centauri is one of my favorite games of all time, I still love to play it.

Oh right, back on topic: still disappointed. Film at wheneven.

Alpha centauri base game without upgrades plays much better with the second to last patch, from memory 3.xx. Patch 4 did something to the AI so they all fold in favour of one big one. Patch 3 you will see miriam get mouthy to yang and yang being most unamused. Planet busters tend to follow. Look into that if you like. I expect the final patch is more difficult for the player but second to final is alot more fun.

Neither game is finished..SC just admits it.

Yep, FDev declared Elite "finished and done" back in Dec 2014. But it wasn't. Heck, they didn't even call it 'early access' which they did call Horizons shortly before it launched... unfinished... SC hasn't been declared finished and done because it isn't. (Just confirming that was the message in my OP...)

Wow...could have sworn someone predicted that the next stage would be continuing to postpone updates until boredom drove the player base away.

Calling it now: there wont be any significant content this year at all. And the game will be declared dead prior to 2020 "content" coming.

Those of us stating the game was in maintenance mode have been ultimately proven right. FDev have provided close to nothing on the pretence of a year of "free updates". Updates that were already thin but became even thinner after failing to deliver on the promise of fleet carriers and improved planet terrain. The only reason 2018 was free was because FDev knew it was so minor they couldn't sell it.

They now admit that they took a sabbatical they knew they could get away with, propped up by fan boys with multiple accounts going over paint jobs and ship kits, while they diverted the majority of workers onto Jurassic Evolution.

The fact that they have nothing waiting in the wings for 2019 is a huge admission. Remember the line "over 100 people working on Elite", what a joke and a talking point...

I eagerly await what FDev decide to be enough of a buggy minimum viable product to stick a price tag on for 2020.

If they cared - at all - about keeping the game alive, there is NO WAY they make this announcement. No way. They would simply continue with the "soon" mantra.

This is a "soft" end of life announcement intended to kill any remaining interest.

I wish that I could disagree with you, but I can't, not one little bit. Spot on.
