Next Update = 2020

By industry standards. Please mention to me another instance of a multi-platform "living game" the developer of which announces that there will be no major new content for the game released for about 18 months.

So what? It's not a subscription game so it's not costing you a penny.

And as for the 'commercial suicide' comment...please.

What no one seems to have considered.
What if it’s amazing? [yesnod]

Even if it's going to be amazing and even possibly exciting, it's not going to appear until late 2020 at the earliest.

It might be great, it might stink, but who even knows what it's trying to be (other than Frontier)?

Yes, we obviously got a lot of things that belong in the category: "Should have been implemented from the start". I mean, people were even more excited for so called "QoL" features than "major" features of an update. That is very telling.

That definetely tells they are doing the right thing.

The 'should've been implemented from the start' argument is nonsense in my opinion. What does that mean, the game should not have been released in 2014 but 2018? I am glad that I had the opportunity to play it for 4 years.

Also the argument was if Frontier added anything usfull since release, in my opinion they did.

This argument is regularly made but the premise of the kickstarter and future development was quite clear and did not include stuff because money and time was not available with ED being Frontier's first self-published title. IIRC the original release went significantly over budget (circa £12m) and was already running later than the stated release date.

delayed again. After being delayed again and again.
i never understand why people get mad about this. rather have a good, fully featured, fleshed out game than a broken piece of sh*t that is buggy as hell and only has 1 thing to do.

thank you frontier for delaying it! take as much time as you need to!

"The New Era"

A ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...

Seriously though, is it not better that they spend 2 years making something significant to add to the game than some of the bolt on gimmicky additions the game has seen since release? It might be better to have that if it turns out to be something good than an update every 6 months that feels lackluster and still hasn't pushed the game forward in any way.

This might just be the best news I have heard for Elite in a while.

2020? Without regular content delivery like a normal game or mmo, that is way to long of a dry spell, by that point I won't even care about Elite whereas I'd be interested were we getting oodles of content along the way. This was a very bad decision on Frontier's part. But I'm sure tons of paint packs and voice packs will be released in the meantime right? Gotta milk that playerbase for all the money before "delaying" the update again. Game's over people, Elite is in Maintenance Mode with no signs of recovery, chuck it into the same bin as Star Citizen and move along, maybe in a year a different space game will release or something.

First, there will be regular content delivery and second normal games don't have regular content delivery. Check your facts.

This thread is full of children running around a wailing with little information and even less common sense. Chill out. Big bad daddy Frontier hasn't forgotten you and they've said they'll be releasing minor updates along the way.

You've been way overreacting for just about 30 pages its time to stop. How did you babies survive back when you had to wait for a sequel and a game wasn't expected to spend an extra ten years developing itself after release? Whats the harm in being vague and leaving things for you to discover and why are all of you acting like they're doing this specifically to exclude you and ruin your day?

It's quite the irony that we are rapidly approaching a point where the fabled 10 year plan will be true, while we've always been called lunatics for believing the game will still be supported after 2020. The very same people are now claiming that the recent news are a sure sign of the game's death.

It can be the best expansion, but we don't know exactly nothing since they never said anything about it. For them it will be very exciting but so they said about all their updates and we know how they went... [where is it]

regular content delivery, you talk about newbie stuff and CG? that doesn't sound like regular content, its more like a maintenance.

Somewhere in between, I'd say. If they're going to try to take the monotony out of CGs then that's a good thing. And you don't try to improve the newcomers' experience in a game you're intending to mothball any time soon.

Let's face it, FDev's track record with new features has been a bit mixed, to put it mildly. A year or two of bug-fixes/small improvements might be a good thing.

Well, look at the bright side. Frontier are throwing a large part of their workforce at the game full time to produce something they are willing to hype up as 'A New Era'. OK, so it is going to take a while, but seriously, so what? I have not seen development for Elite since the release of Horizons that has encouraged me to turn the game on. The game has been sleeping on my computer for two years. Another two years is not going to bother me. On the other hand, when Frontier reveal their work, there might be something substantial that I would consider a leap forward. If not, ah well, I always have a life... :)

The next two updates will bring QoL improvements, benefits, game tweaks, and bug fixes, alongside better New Player Experience. Then subsequent updates will add new features, perks, content, and other additions. The frequency of these updates are slated at every 3-4 months.

Greetings Commanders,

-snip-

Regular updates

In addition to the weekly and monthly activity happening in Elite, we will also be releasing a series of updates roughly every 3-4 months. The first two of these updates will primarily focus on new player and welcoming experiences, and we will also be introducing a number of quality of life improvements for the entire player base, of which we will have more news on in the coming weeks. This will help ensure that new players are able to better progress through the game, and therefore help bring more players through to our very awesome, very welcoming community. We will also have additional game tweaks, benefits and bug fixes for all players. In the subsequent updates we will be focusing on bringing in new features, perks and content, including a range of exciting new additions to the game that will build up to this new era.

-snip-

The Elite Dangerous Team
