BAN THE FSS OR MAKE AN ALTERNATIVE

So... 11 bindings (at least) to navigate the ship menu system, and you whine about the FSS bindings?

Fracking snowflakes...

Seriously, though, to be fair to the OP - ED needs a serious binding look over. There are so many pointless bindings that I simply can't begin to scratch the surface.

Why do we need 12 buttons to navigate the ship menu? Apple manages to let you navigate the Apple TV with 6 - it really is all you need. Maybe 7.

Why do we need a discovery mode and a combat mode? They are mutually exclusive - to the point where they don't even work in the same form of travel (discover only in super cruise, combat only in normal space).

Why do we even need to actively bind scanners? They should be passive - in the same way as your ship automatically scans another ship if you are pointed at it and it's selected, or the way your DSS used to scan planets (and still does) if you choose not to go into FSS mode). The control scheme could really use a bit of simplification - I mean, for heavens sake - why do we need to even need to bind for the galaxy map? Surely, we could just use the very same scheme as the ship, and change it *only* if we want to? Same with the SRV.

It's not as bad as a long time player, though even my high end kit is running out of available bindings at an alarming rate - but man, the newbies must really be suffering.

Z...

strong disagree. I love the flexibility of Elite bindings. I have almost every feature bound to my HOTAS in an intuitive way. Makes flying in VR great

Im still seeing "anti" posts and vaguely mis understanding posts and of course the usual tactic of trying to shut down discussion, but what i dont see is any reason that somebody who didnt fit and use the ADS themself should even care. Its like if FD came out with a new kind of weapon, say the AX weapons and i started on about how i didnt want them in the game for reasons, while im sitting somewhere near beagle point and had no intention to fit such a thing to my ship.

Not a single good reason other than "i dont want it"

Loss of the old way of exploration is actually very sad. It attacked probably the most fanatical supporters of the game, people who were perfectly happy but not making much noise. People who would have stayed quiet and happy all the way thru to 2020 and bought whatever came out at the end, who will now just leave unless the ADS is returned. Happy because with that simple little tool they could generate their own content for themselfs on an almost unlimited basis. Why FD chose to disturb explorers is beyond (ahah) me.

Edit: For maximum clarity Other than the slightly ill thought out thread title, nobody is suggesting the FSS should be taken away. It would be hypocritial to take that stance for somebody complaining that the ADS was taken away.

A good reason actually 2 would be that we scan systems faster and make credits faster. But like I said before if people want both let em have both. It sure did seem to me and a lot of others that the op wanted the fss "banned" and that's what we were responding to or at least I was. Why would fdev ban a module they created it's not a cheat/hack of any type lol.

I still don't understand what the ads does for you guys and why yall are so down about it being gone. What does it do thats so much better? I made about 400mil with the ads and getting the fss was a godsend. No more running around the system if I'm in a hurry and if I got time I can fly around doing surface scans leisurely.

Either way it doesn't seem as though anything big will change till 2020 and that'll be a new version of the game. But to be clear again if people like Burke want both the ads and fss to be available I don't see any problem at all with that to each his own. I just wouldn't hold my breathe expecting anything major to change with regards to this stuff.

at last now the exploration in ED has some stimulating gameplay for the mind with new FSS system. First it was boring, a job for a monkey.
And if you don't stop to look at the image of the planet and read the planet data, but you go fast, you can scan in 5 minutes even systems with 30-40 celestial bodies.

Then there is the advantage of finding out already in the FSS if and which are interesting planets to be mapped or land.

New key to be binded ... there are already so many keys to map, a handful of new keys are not such a big problem, also many of those keys work only while the FSS and DSS are active, so there's no conflict
problem with other already binded keys.

Exactly the old system required us to fly around forever in supercruise now you only got to do that if you want to do surface scans. The advantage really comes up with binary systems that have valuable planets to scan but some can be a quarter million ls away or more sometimes. Instead of a 20min trip it's a 20sec scan now.

The old honk was like "opening the menu" on a system before you decide if you want to order or not. The easy example is glowing green gas giants. To the FSS they remain invisible until they get uncovered, you might well not even realise you had found one unless you scan every gas giant in every system you ever go thru. There are other things, odditys, picture hunting, whatever. The big deal is that you are forced to FSS every single body before you can be certain if the system was even worth scanning in the first place. Now imagine trying to do that for every system you ever land in beteen the bubble and beagle point, you can see why people would just give up? For some of us the search was exploration, the never ending search for you dont even know what, but you know when you see it. All the arguments of better or faster or whatever else are pretty much moot points. That kind of gameplay was deleted from the game when the ADS went, its now easier than ever to just travel past the things you were looking for because ontop of everything else you have to deal with the FSS zooming for every planet in every system and players just arnt doing that.

If you put aside that some of us actually didnt mind flying their ship. There was an aspect that if you wanted that stuff you had to make the effort. But ok, now you get that for free. What a massive drawback to not using the FSS right? So there is balance here, a quick way for those who want it with the drawback of the FSS being an unwieldy tool for certain tasks balanced up against a diferent way that gave quick results in one way but in another forced the player to put extra effort in. Balance and choice.

I guess that's the big difference you explored for the fun of exploring and tbh I got no reason to cast shade on that and thats why I think people should have both as a option then. I explored for profit and use sites like spansh.co.uk and a couple others to map out routes so there's no guesswork.

The fss actually tells you want kind of planet signals have been detected you don't to have scan everything if you don't want to. You can open it up right away and see exactly what type of planets are there and only reveal the valuable ones or ones that you are otherwise interested in. FSS zooming in and out is lightning fast with the right key binds I can do it faster than the game can record new entries.

I got elite in exploration very early on so trust me I don't mind flying. But if I can scan a planet that's far away and move on to scan 3 more systems in the time it takes you to get to that one planet it's obvious that the fss is superior. The fss was unwieldy to me for about 15mins until I realised most the key bindings were not needed. I'm on a ps4 though maybe the controller makes it so easy I dunno.

Fully agree.
Open FSS and immediately see the type of planets present, and if you are looking for something in particular you can quickly find and analyze it, without scanning all the planets. Do not waste time, quickly search around black space on the frequency of the planet you are interested in. The exploration now in addition to having a more rational and playable gameplay, it is still fast.

I've just flown out from the bubble to Sag.A*. Before starting I thought the FSS was quite good. I now think it's great. It replaces the routine honk in every system with an interactive situation, trading off time taken with complete exploration. The tuning feature makes it possible to look for certain objects without making it just a boring blanking-out of everything else. At the same time, exploring a system is actually quicker than it was before. Brilliant game design replacing the placeholder.

FWIW, I felt as you do back when I suggested that Frontier add an optional supercruise autopilot to the game. People insisted because it would make the game "too easy" for them that I could not have it, either. Like you, I made very good, logical arguments for the existence of this module and how it would be optional, and how my gameplay wouldn't effect anyone else (unlike Engineering, which does affect everyone, hence all the threads about griefing).

Where you will see me push back in threads like these are when people want to change the FSS itself and when people say stupid things like, "Nobody likes the FSS and the only reason it exists is because David Braben is senile and nobody had the guts to tell him his idea was dumb." In fact, I could put my copy-n-paste "Why I love the FSS" in here to prove why that sentiment is 100% wrong, but I won't ;)

What you and Drew are pushing for, bringing back the ADS as a separate, optional module, I'm cool with that. The one thing I do wish Frontier would consider is getting rid of the honk for everything. Make players do a lap around the local star so our passive sensors can generate a 3D module via parallax calculations. This "magic honk" is stupid regardless of what tools we are using. What do you think of that?

Its easy to pile on an take the micky out of OP. The FSS sucks, its ruined the fun for many people. While it probably doesnt need to be banned there is no reason to deny the player an alternative. All you people posting "no" and variations of, why do you take such delight in dumping on somebody who just wants the choice? Sinse this is the suggestions forum i have to assume its for FDs benefit. Very sad.

C'mon, that's a bit hypocritical of you. People here are adding their feedback about the FSS in a thread about the FSS. How can you, of all people, take issue with this given that you're more than happy to shoehorn in your opinion of the FSS in any and every thread regardless of the topic at hand?

As for the FSS, I'm still enjoying it around WP7 - not tired of it as some suggested. Regarding the OPs binding issues - nah, one button to open/close the FSS and reused sticks/buttons when using it. Couldn't be simpler, and that's using a PS controller.

An empty timesink. Magic that takes you many times the speed of light is stupid aswell but we all accept the stupid bits that facilitate our own gameplay

The title has the letters FSS in it.. i dont see any issue here.

Yeah really Burke takes "like a dog with a bone" to a new level. [haha]

well para it can be quite the slog having to carefully explian things over and over. But there is a noticable pattern emerging. Once the more reasonable people manage to see past the garbage posts there seems to be a general feeling of agreement that there is no reason to spoil anybody elses fun. Nobody should be offered to choice of adapt or leave which is what some have been preaching on behalf of FD. There is room for everybody here, isnt there para? Am i right?

Speaking in general, posting how great and amazing the FSS is, apart from being mildly irrelevant and OT, is fine. Im sure the people that like the FSS would be just as verbose should it be taken away from them. Im far from the most tenacious poster on these forums anyway :) And its not like im just in a thread posting by myself.

Makes me mad i can't bind the key s of the fss too many controls its mindboggling please listen to us the players its to difficult this fss thing and time consuming we want an simplyer alternative to the fss scanner a simple planet discovery scanner its all about the simple exploration and finding planets with life thank u .:x

Bindings are easy to set up and the FSS is great. So a no from me.
