General / Off-Topic Captain Marvel Movie

I had seen tons of negativity about this on youtube for the past several weeks (before the darn thing was even out). Ignored all of it. Went to go see it this evening.

The beginning was a little hard to figure out (you'll "get it" later on in the movie so I won't spoil it - just stick with it), but otherwise, found it enjoyable, a few laughs here and there, takes place earlier in the time line so expect to see a beige PC running Windows 95 on it. Also had Stan Lee's last cameo appearance in it.

As usual, if you go, stay after the first set of credits. I didn't stay to see if there was another teaser at the end of the full credits since the call of nature was too strong to ignore.

I gave it a [up]

Its was the audience in the movie theatre that spoilt it.

I really can't see anything nasty about that quote. She may well be nasty, but as I don't know her personally, I will pass judgement until I know her more. Which will likely be never.

Ya, I often forget about the high number of ELS on these forums and forget to include a /s. My bad.

Well I didn't find any obtrusive feminism in the movie, at all. The usual Marvel movie good time for me, I liked Bree in the role and her smile when she met Stan Lee's cameo totally sold me as a character to root for. Enjoyed the twists, LOVED the story of Nick Fury's eye, Samuel L Jackson's de-age was insanely good and Carol's SFX visually wow! Just the sort of light-hearted movie I needed after Infinity War frankly. Can't wait for Endgame and Marvel imo still rocks.

I probably won't go out of my way to see it. Besides never being that popular a character in the marvel comics, her power level was seldom used or made redundant by other characters. Major powered events usually involved other female marvel characters. Such as scarlet witch and house of M. The Phoenix five involved Emma Frost. Other female characters seemed preferred. A newer character was named Mz. Marvel. Even Rogue assumed Cpt. Marvel's power of flight. imo, they should have waited until the Fantastic Four was done proper and Invisible Woman could be the power female character in the MCU. Or even a renewed Jean Grey post Dark Phoenix with X-men fully merged into MCU.

I think what Captain Marvel might bring to the table - that these don't - is the Kree connection, which further fleshes out Space as playing field of the MCU? That might not have been a big deal apart from the fact that Guardians of Galaxy and Taika Waititi made Space a fun place to put the Avengers. Pretty much anything can happen in (MCU) space which gives the really high power characters like Thor challenges to go up against, that Earth can't really serve? Just mind out for Flerkens!

This is the best review I've found.

Pretty hilarious and makes all the points.
Marvel has become a McDonalds of film industry.

One prob with the review, Goose is most definitely not a cat. Not even close.

Though can be deceiving, even Captain Marvel isn't the most OP comic character; Red Skull tried holding the tesseract too and look what happened to him.

I'm developing a theory that no MCU character is ever really 'in' until they've interacted on screen with Robert Downey Jnr at least once, though the other original Avengers are also starting to have that cyphering effect. In the post credit, "where's Fury?" didn't Carol Danvers suddenly became an Avenger by virtue of Black Widow and Steve Rogers? Did for me and an interesting effect I think. Any friend of yours is a friend of mine type thing?

Goose had all the best lines.

And no, Captain Marvel will never be an Avenger ... in fact, I fully intend to edit her out once I have a (legal ... just in case there's any thoughts on me getting an illegal copy) copy of Endgame ... I just hope the movie makes sense after, because I won't be buying it if she's in most of the movie and is the one to kill Thanos / bring everyone back, aka "save the day". Either way, after Endgame, I'm done with the MCU and they can have Captain Marvel in it all they want.

She's back on the team in the comics, so I guess in the end it depends on how close Marvel wants MCU and Earth-616 to develop.

Oh I so want her to be an Avenger now :D

Channeling Rocket Raccoon there, as long as he's around MCU is good for me. I like Thor too, funny. So what's up? Too much Corps? I thought interesting it seems Captain Marvel was the cheapest MCU production to date ($150m) .. Antman and the Wasp is next, cost $170m to make.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm actually starting to get super hero fatigue. I am looking forward to Shazam, however, as this looks to be a very different type of movie (and I'm a huge Chuck fan). Of course this won't stop me from renting every MCU movie that is released, but I rarely go see these in the theater anymore. If it weren't for spoilers, I'd even wait for Endgame to come out on disc and just watch it at home, but this movie is too spoiler-sensitive to risk that.

Same here. The movies actually made me go back to the comic books again, digging up the old stories as well as closing up a few gaps in my collection. I just find MCU flat in comparison to the comics, and I'm tired of reboots.
