Elite: Dangerous TV Spot

at 0:16, station camping. Blowing-up a ship near the landing pad.
It's in the advertisement, so does this set the precedent that station camping and spawn killing is an advertised feature of this game, now?
It was in the beta trailer already.

Obviously, this is the reason why docking is even manual, so that we have complete freedom inside of stations, which allows for plenty interesting gameplay opportunities. Otherwise it would have been a simple automatized process and it wouldn't have hurt the game.

Where is the 30 Years piece though. 30 Year Anniversary. Elite is back or some sort of similar tag line. Where are the 30th Anniversary T shirts?

Yep, not only that, but you have to do that manoeuvre shown at the end with every ship you meet or you are not allowed to play.

Assassination mission?

Good idea, but hard for us to do because we don't have 3rd person camera ability.

who needs them? just get a bug load of people together with sidewinders to act as camera crew. you can set up fly past shots, following shots, wide angle the lot - just like a proper camera.

you would need a group of skilled pilots though, both flying the camera ships and the combat/display ships.

at the end of the shoot everyone makes their raw footage available online and then the contest would be to make the best video out of the footage available.

Forgive me, but I don't think Beta is time to be spending advertising money for a TV ad. Hopefully they will wait til at least Gamma to run it. Just my thoughts. I'm happy to see FD is aware of it, though.

As long as anyone who does it incurs the wrath of the station defence grid, it's all good in my book! :)

I'd love there to be drones inside the station that pop out to come and needle a transgressing ship to death. haha.

As most of us know, in this version, a ship can often swan around inside a giant populated space station firing their weapons and blowing things up... without any response or reaction whatsoever.

Rearrange the well known phrase to understand why...

"Beta It's A"

This might just be the tip of the marketing iceberg starting to grind its way forward.

Hmm, maybe "grind" is not the best word to use :p

Maybe its because Frontier is a British company and I'm an American, but the advertisement could have definitely been more interesting for consumers. For people watching advertisements, they need action, amazing visuals (with beginning stating how "all footage in-game"), and the really interesting facts (ex. 400 billion star systems). Heck, I'll make a great T.V advertisement with clips taken from YouTube that will get consumers' attention. I'll even do it in exchange for a free copy of the game :). It would be my honor.

Ha! "Elite doesn't do enough marketing!"...tv spot..."It's too soon for marketing!". Can't win. :p

Or...

"FD doesn't do enough marketing!"

Creates a TV spot by quickly edit together already existing footage into a short 30 second clip...

"Why are FD wasting time to make a TV spot!!! Make content for the game instead!!!

*sigh*

Beta is the perfect time for marketing and advertising. It's got to build up momentum in the UK and abroad so more people talk about it and want it.

If they waited, then their first week/month of sales would look terrible and their investors would be upset. All the gaming sites would then say that ED's launch was a failure.

FD/Michael.... I hope to see the spot over here in the States. Hint: Air it during The Big Bang Theory. Huge audience. Just sayin'.

Whoever did the music nailed it. There's a little nod to the old Frontier music in there, it pinged a nostalgia nerve for me right away.

Not a bad trailer but I didn't like the music used and thought could have used some more exciting footage. Perhaps I'm being too picky.

I think they music they used was pretty lowest-common-denominator military-space-combat theme too, but maybe they are aiming at that demographic with this spot. The footage chosen is ok, the kind of things we've all seen before from the game, but the mass TV audience hasn't yet.

The problem I have with it is, what does it tell us that a hundred other space games' trailers/TV spots haven't yet? Space ships fight each other and explode, to an urgent, martial soundtrack. So we said "Dangerous", but in a really generic way. How could it better express the freedom, the scale, and the challenge the game poses?

Make a contest, who can make the best 30 sec TV spot :D

Absolutely, yes. What I'd like to see from FD is
1) A brief to choose one of the main roles and create a spot for it.
2) A brief to create spots addressing different demographics other than the 16-21 year old male gamer
3) Put out a build with Ctrl-Alt-C to hide the cockpit chrome - call it V 0.1 of the camera drone implementation, just recognise that these days, enabling user created content creation will do a more for the game than any number of TV spots.

Liked that.

Change of pace with the music being a bit more dramatic.

I'll forego the royalties this time.

quite nice

but advertising the Beta, really?
that must be for Beta 2, and it must have a lot more content than SB1, because if not, and it's something similar like SB1, it will in no way meet the expectations raised with such an ad - and probably actually have a contrary effect

not that the Ad promises big things, but if you saw such an advertising as "normal" customer you would definitaly expect a feature complete Beta, like many games provide nowadays

I think it's nicely done and I like the music.

But I wouldn't put it on regular broadcast TV. Only hardcore gamers have ever heard of Kotaku, Massively Joystick, etc. I'm guessing it's for Twitch or similar - only very targeted advertising for people who play lots of games.

The full advertising campaign shouldn't come until about a month or so after final release. Then they'll be able to use quotes from the Guardian, New York Times, etc.

That would be a complete waste of money and an embarrassment for the project to fully advertise the game while it's still in beta and not even feature complete. There is a reason why you only see games with massive marketing budgets advertise on T.V. - and that's because its for branding.

A niche product like this marketed to the masses will bring in a statistically insignificant number of people and just flush money down the toilet compared to other media where the people who would be interested in the game can be found. And even then, you only go on a mass marketing campaign once the game is feature complete.

FD can use their budget more efficiently, as they are doing with the expo coming up. But a T.V. ad for a Beta?
