News Forum revamp coming soon!

Well, I dont know what it is that has them so excited,, but the hype they have passed on to us, has me doing the Pow Wow War Dance, hopping around in circles, while giving off War Hoops. Let me know when its time to stop.

On XenForo 2.1 (what we'll be using), it mostly is a reactions system.
In due time, we'll probably add some fun reactions to that initial list of six.[big grin]
Can we get some ED specific emoticons designed by FD? That might be fun.

This Elite Dangerous Forum really needs to adopt more robust and active Forum Moderator policies, seriously lacking at present.

I see it implements the "Early Learning Easy Reader" whitespace and large font model ... oh joy... :)

I seriously hope that's just skinning; big fonts are great for mobile devices but have no place on a desktop. I really really hate the "mobilisation" of desktop UIs over the last 5 years or so. It's two very very different ways of interacting with content; please don't just dumb it down to the lowest common denominator!

Couldn’t agree more - I have seen too many sites that claim to deliver the most appropriate format for the device they are being viewed on, but the reality is the desktop is little different. Sites where a whole article could have been displayed on a screen quite easily, but the font size and layout means having to scroll 3 pages of large text with oceans of whitespace surrounding it are hugely irritating on even a 15” screen, but look fine on a mobile.

As it is, this site does change its’s apperance appropriately for when on a mobile vs a larger screen, which I have really appreciated. I hope this continues :)

We got an ETA on this yet?

They'll wait until the last moment, and make an announcement of an announcement.
Then they'll do a livestream of the new features, telling us how great they are, but avoid answering any questions.
Then they'll do a beta period that everyone will complain is way too short and they don't have enough time to test the new features, and there'll be features Frontier will have held back until the actual release.
Then it'll go down for a whole day while they upgrade and everyone will keep asking "Is it ready yet?"
Then the upgrade will go live and the forum will explode in how broken the background mechanics are and lecture Frontier ad nausea about what they should have done and idiots like me will make sarcastic posts like this one.

Just teasing .... it'll be ready when it's ready ... and I'm sure it'll be fine. :)

It is a bought in product so much of that won't happen. Though I am sure the usual subjects will be rage quitting the forum to play the game in protest due to the strength of the anti-sarcasm and anti-negativity filters that come with the new product.

FWIW I googled the product. Example public forum:
https://xenforo.com/community/threads/articles-with-xenforo.161921/

Works well on mobile (phew! Personally I mostly use mobile and it's been frustrating not having access to things like the rep button....or not being able to go next page using the bottom navigation buttons if someone stuck a spoiler tag in the last post of this page).
It seems to dynamically alter formatting well when you shrink the width of the page too. But there is a LOT of wasted space when you go full screen - more than there is with the existing forum's 'FIXED' themes.
I think it looks pretty good personally - but I'm biased because I use the mobile a lot and the current mobile them is pretty bad.

We got an ETA on this yet?

Our new forums are set to go live at the end of March.
