wow the asp is bigger than I thought

I can't wait to get my hands back on the Asp. Yup, its a good deal bigger than the cobra, and I always felt it was 2-3 times larger. I hope we do get hands on in 2.0 because it is going to be one of those ones that needs to be right for me. Want the chance for feedback.

Not overpowered, but like in ffe, a good balance of resilience range and punch. Good range of upgrade possibilities too. It was possible to make it a <peachy> heavy assault cruiser, a rapid response long range attack cruiser (gcu for those that get that term) or a deep explorer.

As for the python. My second favourite ship after the asp (properly marmite). I sincerely hope the unknown is not it. The python was slim and elegant in counter maneuvers. It was a real weaver. That just looks overweight and seriously ugly.

I saw that graphic in the newsletter and had the same reaction. First "omg is that an Asp"? and then "YES! It's an Asp!"

A little surprised the Asp is as large in footprint as the Lakon Type-6 is.

Of course, it'll be slimmer, and hopefully it will have an attractive front aspect... I know from discussion a while back that FD were having a difficult time reconciling the classic slim lines of the Asp with the design principles they've been using as they've created ships - the original lines for the Asp turned out not to have enough space to accommodate a cockpit or something like that....

Not sure why many are so surprised.

I believe the first cobra mk 3 had 20t versus 120 odd in the ffe asp.

That's 6 times more.

No surprises.

I think the surprise comes from the asps maneuverability in ffe. Its borne out in these images. Oversize engines should give it real maneuvering punch.

If FD do it justice (and the images look promising) it will be a great all rounder with much customisability.

Hope so.

The Asp was always bigger than the cobra. If I remember correctly, the Cobra mk3 was a 100t ship (80t capacity no drive) while the Asp was 150t (120t internal).

I will be interested to know how those orca type people carriers will hope to defend them selves against interdictions.

Escorts, or just staying to the safer tourist routes where there is government Navy protection. There is plenty of present-day tour boat traffic in the Caribbean, South Pacific, Norway. Not so much around the Somali coast.

Ah I missed that part. Well it is a good deal larger and more boxy than I remember from FE2.

Thanks for the correction. :D

yea, it was in a very very early newsletter, i cant find the one it was from but i did find the image i was after on the FD photobucket account, if you have a look at the image title it kind of gives away the ship it is (click the image to go to the PB account)

I also found this pic on there from another newsletter, it gives you an idea of the scale of the ships we are flying:

Thanks Andy.

If the image by the OP is to scale, the Asp is very close in size to the La-6. When I have had a Type 6, to me it feels like it would make a good smuggling or exploration ship, depending on how the Asp handles we may have another nice ship to fly. Just not the way I thought it would look.

I never really liked the ASP, it seemed like a bit of a weird set of compromises in FE2, large internal space for a fighter but just one missile slot, the rear gun was also pretty pointless except perhaps as a spare if the front gun got slagged. The Cobra mk3 just seems a much better combat ship, and if you wanted the extra space for trading then at that price point you shouldn't be in a combat ship anyway.
