General / Off-Topic Dr Who, the Capaldi years!

I thought it was poor I have to say. Just all a bit silly. The issue I have had is with the writing and trying to create these incredible storylines woven through the whole series. Very clever if you pull it off but if you make it too clever no-one can follow what the heck is going on! I am hopeful for the rest of the series but I was pretty close to switching off. Far too much silliness for my liking.

TBH I never really took to Matt Smith - sort of got used to him but never found him a very convincing Doctor.

Have better hopes for Capaldi - a Doctor that's actually older than me again (albeit by not very much)!

But the storylines seem entirely interchangeable since the reboot some years ago - they've kind of run out of ideas..

I've found that since David tennant times, the storylines have always gone that way. After watching a whole episode, I still say "What was that all about?". The storylines seem like complete junk half the time, which is a real shame. This was especially true of the last series. The start of Matt Smith had some good episodes, but as it dragged on less.

They have been concentrating more on story arcs, rather than on the story for a single episode. Hopefully, that might change.

It's good to see that the next episode will have the old Daleks in them, rather than the iDalek design, which I still don't like.

I'm loving this new, darker doctor. what they tried to do with Colin Baker but sadly failed (he had some great episodes though, and a ton of great audio plays)

I have enjoyed both episodes so far. Capaldi is great to watch. Clara is still in it. The Sontaran character is played well for laughs. I love the woman playing the new baddy (though not enough to know her name). There were Daleks in the second episode (and Vod and Tyres). You could see Steven Moffat's fingerprints in the writing which is never a bad thing for me. I really liked the exchange where Clara had responded to the Doctor's comment about not thinking he was her boyfriend, to which he replied with something like "I didn't say it was your mistake". And I can watch with my six year old now so it doesn't matter that I'm watching a kids show.

Glad Capaldi seems to be living up to my high hopes. I thought Matt Smith was the best of the New Doctors, with Ecclestone a good second, but in my view neither of them got to really show their best Doctor - It seemed they were just really getting going when they regenerated - which may be the best way to do it. McGann's short outings as the Doctor have been brilliant.
In any case - Capaldi is actually shaping up to be possibly my favourite Doctor - fingers crossed. And that is saying something I have been watching it since 1974...
A lot depends on the writing and how it all comes together. Enjoying it very much.

Last Saturdays effort was certainly a huge improvement. Not sure where the weird woman welcoming people to heaven is going, but clearly she is going to be the over-riding story arc through the series.

It seems to me she's collecting people that the Doctor has "killed" so I'm sure they'll be used against him at the end of the season.
I am liking the episodes so far.
Of the reboot, Ecclescake was my least favourite, Tenant suffered from dense companions (it scares me that Martha was heading into the medical profession, and Donna really spoilt the show for me).
Matt Smith's I quite enjoyed, but a lot of his episodes seemed to be solved by waving his sonic screwdriver around (something that Tenant started doing near the end).

I do hope Clara sticks around, she's much more switched on than many earlier companions, and sees the universe at a slight angle so asks important questions at the right time. Perhaps she was created as we couldn't have Sally Sparrow for a companion?

Looking forward to more Capaldi. He seems more the arrogant b*st*rd we all know and love from earlier Dr Who (Tom Baker especially). Also, I hope they develop the story arches some. Early Dr Who was almost always multiple episode story lines, while the new show has a story done in an episode.

Let's see what this Robin Hood thing is about, then! Moffat has been great, but too many plot elements and not enough, well, plot.

:D S

Definitely getting a Tom Baker vibe from Capaldi.

I have a theory about Missy...

Warning - don't click if you haven't been watching the latest series yet!

- that she's a Time Lord (Lady? Dudette?) who's snatching up people who are just about to die in her TARDIS with a "Heaven" desktop theme ( ;) ) - in exactly the same way the Doctor did at the beginning of this Dalek episode with Journey Blue.

Now, I have a nagging suspiciion that Missy is The Rani - in my opinion she somewhat bears a resemblence to Kate O'Mara when she played The Rani back when.

Of course, I'm probably wrong about all that - time will tell ;)

Whoops! Should've thought about doing that in the first place - my apologies.

I've edited my previous post now - closing the barn doors for you I know, but may save others.

Got news for you... she finishes at Christmas I believe... :(

Only seen the first episode with Capaldi..

I miss Paul McGann though.. pity they used John Hurt instead of giving Paul more screentime.. John Hurt is a great actor though

I think the series clincher is when robin says to the doctor "You are as real as I am".

I think we will eventually find the Doctor is just a fictional character who has his life created for him by writers. He has been taken over by bad writers and this mad woman in the the garden is an editor desperately trying to put some interest into very lame plots, in a bid to save the doctor.

Love the latest. "Listen" We are learning a lot about the Doctor, and it is all consistent and adds to the canon. Clara's role as being an influence throughout his timeline is also nicely included. Also the style of this series does seem to be managing to re-create the flavour of the '70's episodes but entirely bringing it into the 21st century.
These guys know what they are doing.

I must say that the first two episodes had me a bit worried. They didn't really have a nice flow to them and felt a bit "forced" IMO, but this third one was great! More like this please! :)

I haven't watched last nights episode yet... I started to, late last night, but I have a bit of a thing about monsters under the bed so I turned it off...

Pansy I know lol

Dr Who?

As a fan of the original series I have to say that I can take or leave new Who.

I was getting use to Russell T Davis writing who and sorta came round to it what with the inclusion of Elizabeth Sladen (RIP) - but really don't like Moffatts writing at all. I wish that the new series would use more foes from the Doctors past other than Cybermen & Daleks (god, I'm fed up with those enemies!) And please, please, don't bring back the Master. Roger Degado was the one and only Master for me!

So as I am pleased Who is back - I as hoping that it would capture a bit of the old days. But I spose people are into more character driven plots rather than sci-fi driven. Star Trek:TNG has got a lot to answer for!

Cheers,

Simon
