General / Off-Topic Post Likes and thanks, a poll

I'm personally against anything dislike/negative for a thread/post rating. Allows for mob mentalities and other negative effects to a community.

I've been a mod on a forum that went from nothing to likes/dislikes and within 2 weeks there was fighting and arguments going on. After removing the like/dislikes the pain was still there for some posters and the vibrant fun community never returned. It's now gone from >150 regular users to <10.

On the flip side another forum added a simple +1 button with users not knowing their scores, just a count on individual posts and nothing changed.

My personal opinion is just to add a +1 / thanks kind of button, and as you said, steer well clear of any ability to post negativity with a single click.
+1 [up]

Because people will start posting things to get as many likes as they can just like I saw on other forums. I think that right now people share things that maybe are not as good as they think but they want to get feedback.

Even if the post thanks/like system only was on a per-post basis?

The french fanmade forum about PlanetCoaster ( http://www.planetcoaster.fr ) use this system, and it's great !

The only problem is that they let people give "-1" too, which is not a good idea.
But the "+1" system works well.

For me I don't like 'like' unless there is also a 'dislike' (seems pointless and ever so slightly dictatorial to only allow people to be positive)!!

But as has been said, that can lead to trouble.

so rather than rating or stamping opinions in a competitive way, I'm a massive fan of a simple 'thanks' button. It's a very simple way of thanking a person for a post, for whatever reason you found it useful or interesting. The key thing is that it allows people to show gratitude without picking sides or casting votes on a potentially controversial thread.

Its also great to display how many times a member has been thanked, as it effectively rewards members for posting thoughtfully, and also helps new members identify how much confidence they should have in responses from existing members (if someone has posted 500 times and been thanked 400 times, it's a safe bet they know about whatever they're posting about).

Lastly, it's just plain good manners to allow people to say thanks, even if they don't have anything specific to say in a follow up post! Just a casual 'thanks'.

Some people have asked for a dislike button because they want to say, “That thing isn’t good.” And that’s not something that we think is good for the world. So we’re not going to build that.

Thanks for the well thought out feedback, it does help me on deciding.

+1 for a likes/thanks system.

Especially at feature request posts, this can reduce double posting and helps showing what a wide audience would like to see in the game.

I think that this forum at least needs a thanks OR poll function - as you say, without it's hard to separate what really is a popular idea from the hundreds of other ideas that whilst nice, probably aren't sought enough to justify development resources, at least not as a priority.

& also I'm getting the impression Brett C works 24/7 (which we appreciate greatly)!

I have something known as Non24 (hypernychthemeral syndrome). I've tried to adjust myself to a normal schedule over the past year, but ended up making it worse. :(

In turn, it does make it seem like i do have a 24/7 schedule. [knockout]

I voted yes but feel that the Thanks option would be best for this forum. It just be "Thanks" for making the thread or posting your thoughts etc even if it's not directed at someone for an interaction, the "Thanks" can represent "yeah cheers for bringing that up, that makes sense and I want to see that" all at a click of the button.

I think you should just have a thanks button, and after you click it, below that post it says "X said thanks", or if multiple people pressed it, "X, Y and Z said thanks". I don't think you should have a likes counter on peoples profiles or anything, because then people get thirsty. I seen the thanks feature on another forum and it works well I think.

I agree with all these as it is nice to know if people like your work, but can be disheartening if they don't. You will find people going on Steam and thumbing down reviews of games even if they don't own the game. I would hate to see that type of mob mentality to show up here because that is a very slippery slope. Some people get kicks out of thumbing down things for no reason except to be mean. This is a very friendly forum and I would hate to see it change.

When I post my work here, it it usually to get some constructive help to make it better. If someone tells me that they like something and why, or dislikes something and suggests a way to improve it in a friendly way that is great, but if I were to simply see a bunch of dislikes with no comments as to why I might be tempted to stop visiting this forum at all. I am a member on another forum (I will not mention which one) where I hardly ever post anything any more simply because of that. The other forum ended up forming cliques and if you were not part of that clique your work was shredded without mercy.
