Elite starting grow thin for me

I am concerned that there are still a lot of features to add and the end of the year is fast approaching.
There's always next year. After 30 years of waiting (or 19 years, depends on your viewpoint), where's the hurry? :)

We don't want history to repeat itself (think FFE release), do we? ;)

Well after about a weeks running around, I finally get the credits to purchase a Hauler along with a docking computer (Around 28,000 credits)

Took it out for a spin and tried the docking computer out....worked a treat and sipped my cuppa grinning as my computer glided me into dock

Then undocked and head off to Aulin Enterprise. Came out of hyperdrive and started to super cruise to station. Waited for the message "Safe Disengage Ready" and then disengaged Super Cruise..... Next thing boom!! ship destroyed instantly!!....Lost everything & couldn't afford to buy the insurance to replace it all!!!

I understand its a Beta ect and that'll teach me to purchase Beta's from now on...but how crap is that. Thats me done with game for a long while now....can't be bothered to go building up credits for another week!!!

I'd rather go back to EVE Online than start all over again with this!

Completly gutted :(

What is the favourite saying in Eve online when people complain they have nothing left after losing it all? Oh yes, I remember. Don't fly what you cannot afford to lose.

Says it all really. It was sad this happened to you but this is a beta you are testing. Ticket the problem, move on and ensure you have enough cash to replace stuff before upgrading to a bigger ship and splurging out on a full load.

At least when the insurance works in game in ED which is most times, you don't get just a piddly 10% of your ships value as in Eve.

Simply don't buy a ship when you don't have enough to insure it. You wouldn't buy a car without insurance...

True, but a little message stating the current insurance value somewhere... either at purchase or on a ship stat page would be helpful. Maybe even make it RED if current credits do not equal that value. Maybe there is some notification in the design forums... I need to check that.

I'm so happy it's playable right now. :)

I'm now 100% free from concerns about when some later phase will be ready to play... coz I'm able to fly a Cobra Mk III (and others) today!

a) That's a sucky bug, I've heard a number of reports of, but only by people who say "bug happened, /quit". I haven't managed to repro it yet.
b) Now that you've played the game some, you should be able to make 30,000 credits in a few hours (see below),
c) We're told upfront payment of insurance will be a thing eventually,

It's actually not hard to make 30,000 credits in less than 20 hops. Market prices change, so by the time you read this, the profitability of this exact run probably no-longer applies, but:

Assuming you start at Chango with 1kcr (if you have less than that, just delete your commander and start actually over) and you sold your free laser to increase your jump range:

Code:
I BOOTIS/Chango Dock -> ASELLUS PRIMUS/Beagle 2 Landing:

The Hauler is going to set you back 28000 credits, so I set a nice 9k margin here.

Buy your hauler, set 4000cr aside as an insurance, assume you have just 5000cr to play with, sell that laser again and in 6 hops you're back to 30kcr.

All these people trying to get second helpings of pudding before they've eaten their dinner...it's terrible. They are just going to end up sat at the table by themselves trying to force down cold mashed potato.

Yeah, I agree. Some people are just posting without actualy reading the whole thread. So they're reacting to OP's first post, but we all know he has changed his mind and explaned himself already.

I actually really like this thread because there are so many CMDR's who react with understanding and offer help and advise. That's a sign of a healthy community IMO.

But it should be closed now, I think.

I worked my way up to a CobraIII and lost it with no money to buy my premium. That was a steep learning curve I will never repeat.
Got in a sidewinder, grabbed some free gold from LP, then bought a Hauler and traded between Dahan and Asellus till I could afford a Viper.
Had some fun shooting stuff and selling gold on the Black Market and bought a Cobra. Went exploring a bit, got more Illegal Gold and bought a Type-6.

Now I am making 40000 cr a run between Dahan and Asellus so I can afford a Type-9.

I too sat there back in Azebam City with my head bowed, angry and frustrated after losing everything. But I dusted myself off, and made an effort to do it better.

So you're not the only one ;)

Yea, something like that would be good.

I learnt the hard way as well ...and in the most comedic of circumstances :D

Coming from EVE, you SHOULD be accustomed to losing ships and cargo. That is a fact of life in the EVE universe. It seems this may be a fact of life with E:D as well (which I am personally O.K. with.) Danger is what makes it exciting!

Ironically, I was a beta tester for Eve Online and quit it when they wiped my beta account and all my big fat stuff I had accumulated. :D

Anyhoo, you did a noob mistake by not leaving enough creds for insurance, but at the same time, the final game needs to be better att informing the player about the risk. For example, you could have a conditional warning message if youre asking for a launch request with too few creds to pay insurance...

Agree, its easy to criticise for not keeping enough for insurance, but most of us have probably done this at least once because after grinding for hours to get enough for a bigger ship you just cant wait any longer (at least the first time).

This game is in Beta and has it's maddening quirks, but dam! Got to be the best game out there even in it's testing and growing pains stages. This game takes real 'chops' to play, it's hard, and I love it for it! BIG learning curve but that's what great simulations and great games are all about. BUGS and the testing for them (like losing your ship for no apparent reason) is what a beta is all about. Everything we do is getting wiped anyways. As you learn rebuilding is much less of a pain, but then rebuilding takes less time after learning what to do. >>There are so many different ways to do it<< Another BIG feather in this games hat. Have patience and have fun exploding along the way anyway!! :)

You do know there will be a wipe before gamma and may even be other wipes if required ?
Insurance will have a lot more implemented ,you will be able to take a loan if you loose ship and are short of funds

Noob move by not factoring in insurance (I would know, I had a cobra for approximately 2 hours...), BUT I do think the UI could be better about advising the player of insurance costs at the time of ship purchase. Perhaps when purchasing a ship there should be an option to buy insurance at that time, in fact I'd say it should be defaulted YES and let the player manually "waive" insurance. Just like at times people sign waivers disclaiming fault by a service provider (think surgery, certain sporting activities, etc).

So while I do agree that people should be considering "what happens if I lose this ship" at time of purchase, really the UI should provide enough information at the appropriate time. Hell, it doesn't even tell you what insurance WOULD cost when you buy the ship.

It's almost as if you shouldn't be able to spend money if that takes you beyond leaving you enough insurance required to get to your current position?

Time waits for no man, you've heard that expression I'm sure.
I want to see this game in all its glory before I am in my box
You need to be an old fart to understand...:D

This is a very decent point, and well made +1

On the insurance topic, not sure if it's strictly on thread topic but .. carrying insurance is one of those "life lessons" that Elite is good for!!

Along with how to buy and sell in a market, keep friends close enemies closer, even what happens if you take on a contract and don't complete in time, Elite was always good for this. There's something intelligent going on beside "how to be a good soldier".

For instance .. I bought a real life car when I was 17 and that I only insured to third party fire and theft to "save money" .. when I crashed it aged 18 I lost the lot, my savings ... Which taught me that ; if you buy "cheap" you buy "twice" !! (A lesson that I'd rather learn in ED .. how I loved that car!)

yes it is a beta and stuff can happen.

But m8, on the bright side you learned a valuable lesson in beta and not in the final release allready.
Always make sure you have enough in the bank to at the very least pay for your insurance fees :)
(all beta progress will get wiped before final anyways, so now is a time where you can try out and fail much of the games aspects with out loosing much.)
And part of beta testing is about finding these bugs and report them to the devs, so they wont show up in the final release :)
So each time you find one of these, you send your support ticket. This way you will not have to suffer it on the release when its really a set back. :)

ps,
it amusing you compare a game that is very unforgiving to Elite, where loosing a ship is really not much more then 2-3 trades worth of insurance fees :)
