General / Off-Topic Scottish Referendum Result. Post your thoughts here.

If I'd voted for personal self interest I'd have voted Yes - I could have had an rUK and Scottish passport and, having no dependants, could easily have moved to England if it all went horribly wrong. And stayed and benefited if it went the other way. However, I don't think gambling a country's future with so much doubt about the actual detail of independence was the right thing to do. I voted No because I believe it was the right thing at this time. Come the future and a more detailed plan of what would happen, I may vote differently.

Anyway, good result I think - a clear decision has been made and a very significant Yes vote that should (let's hope) give Westminster a kick up the backside. The next few months should be pretty interesting - I just hope they don't water down the commitments or we'll be in for years of acrimony.

Well, it seems like everyone here is happy with the result. I think it was pathetic to be honest, and shows how far we've fallen, but the mandate is pretty clear.

I only hope that now there can be a movement on political change, keeping the Barnett formula, and protecting the services from Westminster's savage cuts as much as possible. It's Damage Limitation Max time.

The opportunity to do that ourselves have been squandered.

Now we have to make sure the politicians break the habit of a lifetime and actually follow through on their promises.

As you might tell, I'm not hopeful, and bitterly disappointed at this moment in time. :(

Well as a Scot, I'm relieved it's all over. I was a reluctant "No" voter, I would have loved to vote yes but the case just wasn't there. The yes campaign whilst compelling had no meat on the bones, even if they could have given some certainty on currency I would have been swayed. Still the results in and the turnout means that it can't be argued with the people have truly spoken.

Hopefully this will be the catalyst for real political change across Britain.

I can't say I'm surprised at the result, assuming it wasn't rigged, but its been a good demonstration of how fear can influence people and keep them in line.

As for political change you have to be joking. The self-serving political cartel of the entrenched three parties will go on and will continue to be totally unrepresentative of the population whilst endlessly droning on about 'hard working families, up and down the country'.

I agree, it actually appears that the Scots want to be serfs.

I don't suppose a cheery 'never mind' and a metaphorical arm round the shoulder would help...? A hug from Mrs. K perhaps? :)

The margin of the decision should help the divisions that have been opened up to heal.

Making accusations of "fix" and griping doesn't help the healing process.

I'm hoping that this will allow a good shake up of the structure for all the nations.

My only worry is the pace of change due to the promises made may be too fast to make a good job of it.

Large Majority? 10% difference is not that large when 97% of the voters turned out!!

The Scots have chose at a large majority, to remain in the union. In these turbulent times, the popular wisdom has been more stronger than the thirst for adventure. Stability and security to the Kingdom, and the important influence of UK in the world, have been chosen

How is it unhelpful?

It's not very good for reconciliation between the YES and NO camps.

Those who voted YES have to come to terms with the result and then work with the majority of Scots who want the Union to work.

That is more difficult if the YES camp keep carping on, despite having agreed that this result would be definitive.

It's tabloid style rhetoric, it's insulting and it serves to perpetuate the feeling of ill will that some sections of the voting public had towards those with different opinions.

I'm surprised you are so easily offended. I seriously doubt my remarks are going to make any difference but I say things as I see them.

The will to be a serf is a problem the world over.

I wouldn't believe the doublespeak you are hearing from pundits on network television. Alarm bells should start ringing when you hear such terms. Next we'll be trying to create a consensus.

It'll be at least a decade before it comes up like this again.

In a decade, North Sea oil won't be a consideration.
