Proposal Discussion Are we absolutely sure about the name?

The idea is that the game is supposed to be dangerous, and it will be.

This naming format has been used for decades, it's nothing new

70's - Final Chapter: Walking Tall
80's - Rambo: First Blood Part II
90's - Highlander II: The quickening

In all honesty, do you really expect FD to change the name of a game this far into development? Answer truthfully now.

Also, while your at it, send an email to Microsoft explaining that there are no Halos in Halo and the whole game series should be renamed to "Alien Killfest"

The "Halo" (meaning a ring shaped object) refers to the several ringworlds you are running about on - there are parts in the game series where if you bothered to look at your surroundings (ppl NEVER look up) you'd have seen that you were standing on what is known as a "ringworld" an artificial construct terraformed (sort of) in a ring shape to provide a habital area without using a pre-formed planet.

It's similar in theory to a dyson sphere (which isn't a new sort of vacuum cleaner!) but simpler to construct.

There is also a series of sci-fi books based on the subject of ringworlds; the original of which is by Larry Niven, whom incidentally is one of the people David B cites and an influence of the this whole Elite series.

So Bungie/soft would be a bit peed off you'd not even noticed all that storytelling and graphics work they put into making the whole game feel more like an "event" than a simple run alienkillfest.

You should write them an apology; Shame on you.

Now go play the series again armed with that knowledge and marvel in all it's glory, the notion of a ringworld.

On topic: (lol eventually) I've always thought Elite Dangerous somewhat of a misnomer as the title Elite is what you are after, and although you can't have "Elite: Elite" - somehow "Elite: Dangerous" for those who know the kill tier seems like - 1 down from the top.

I agree it's very late and changing it is prolly impossible, but has been known to happen before on game release so...

What about: Elite: Anniversary, Elite: New Frontier, Elite: Reborn / Rebirth, or simply Elite : IV Origins (which would help those new to the series realise this game is where the whole industry started - IMHO Elite is the game that proved PC gaming was a viable industry to be promoted and not just some geeks in their bedrooms banging out code).

I know he's too humble but David B really should take more credit for what he and Ian started: naming it Elite : IV Origins would be a good way to do that.

At any rate the name is decided now, all the media coverage and branding has been under the name "Elite: Dangerous" so it would be madness to change it even if they wanted too.

Put it another way, if you're familiar with Elite you'll recognise "Dangerous" as one of the Elite rankings. If you're not, then you wont.

In order for people to accept the name, rather than laugh at it or think it is silly. FD need to give a few lines or explanation available at the start of the game ( in a FAQ or about page )or on their site before it is bought (on the back of the box).

Once I found out the reasoning behind the name, I liked it (a lot) but without that reasoning I wanted them to change it to ' Elite 4 ever' as this shows that it is the fourth a last version since it will grow and last forever.

I thought it was an odd name to choose, right from the first time I heard it. The penny didn't drop as to why DB had chosen it until I heard him explain the real meaning, and since then it has made sense - but I still don't like it.

It. could be called Elite, but then it could be confused with the original. Elite IV also wouldn't be all that accurate (the other two were Frontier: xxx).

The original elite came out 30 years ago. They could have gone with just Elite again. Elite Dangerous sounds like an expansion pack tbh

I suppose that's true. But those of us that ARE familiar with the Elite rankings might wonder why a lesser rank has been appended to the original name. If I had an Olympics game called Gold Medal I wouldn't name the sequel Gold Medal: Bronze Medal.

I have no problem with the name personally. It is unfortunate that it just doesn't work to talk about it to the un-initiated. The response to saying I am playing a new game is curiosity up till I say "Elite:⁠Dangerous" then the reaction changes to a non-verbal sounds stupid face. Whenever I talk about it now I have stopped calling it Elite:⁠Dangerous and instead just call it Elite.

Works visually. Doesn't at all work verbally.
When it is a world famous game everyone has heard of then maybe that will change.

Probably not the best game to use as an example after the mention of the 'Title: Subtitle' thing.

Just laying it out there .... I've never been a fan of the whole Title:Subtitle thing. It tries to be clever but is way overused. I'd almost be more in favor of Elite IV.

So what happens when you become Elite. Do you become Elite:Elite?
