Why are Fdev so bad at community management?

That the company remains in business is a gamble, in this case that money is still there & the company is prosperous.

That this was not addressed proactively when the plan changed is the point. I raise it in this thread as an example to the community team of something handled poorly. I had to actually go & talk to them in person to get a response.

They changed the DLC release/finance plan in response to the player reaction to Horizons. We always knew expansions were dependent on the game being financially viable, they probably had to reassess where they pegged that which has had a knock on effect on scheduling.

Like I said its a gamble.

Stigbob, I have discussed this face to face with FDev. You are not going to change my mind, and I don't need to change yours. It is an example of poor communication.

And that is utterly ludicrous and completely indefensible. I love this game but the management around it (and I do not mean the poor CMs or those with no ability to influence when and what is communicated - exec producers, product managers and lead designers) is an abomination.

Indeed.
It seems clear there is information that can be imparted but is only done so after lots of pestering, which doesn't help to create a positive vibe.

I kinda sort of understand why the topic starter said that the community managers do a great job - he was trying to be polite, but... Did you see their streams? I don't know who is the guy hosting these streams but he said he's a community manager. 'Go to the forum with this' is his only answer to the chat whether it is a question or a suggestion or something else. They could have bought a cheap answering machine instead of paying this guy's salary every month. Looks like that guy doesn't know anything about the game, the company he's working at, the people who watch his streams, streaming in general, and more importantly about what 'community manager' means. It has to be either that or his bosses don't understand what community manager is and won't allow him to do his job properly because of that. On top of that he's just way too young to be able to say something interesting to the people who've been looking for Raxxla for the last 30 years.

That part in bold is what I think is happening at FDev.

LEP's are always a gamble.

Its not a gamble at all. It was they highest tier left for me to support the project. Would I still be able to name an NPC or station I would have gone that way, but I couldn't. The moment E: D was gamma released I already had more bang for bucks than any other game I ever owned.

It's still a gamble. LEP's aren't only bought by those with the available money to spend on them. A whole bunch of people think "I'm not sure I'll get my moneys worth, with a LEP, so I wont take that gamble/risk and, instead, I'll just buy the base game and go from there..."

I didn't buy a lottery ticket, I bought a voucher. The only risk is that the company goes under.

This is an excellent example of just the kind of thing FDev can clarify.

Dont blame the messengers.
They just dont have anything substantial to talk about.
Period.
Im still reeling in shock and manic laughter that ED and FD even got nominated for a game award.
They remade a game from the 80's. It looks pretty. It hasnt really got nowt. Its still stuck in single player 80's. Yup, we got some extra stuff. Yay. How long? Good grief.
Braben wouldnt know how to make a game if it fell out of his rear. and that therein is the problem.
Just like Chris Roberts.
They are so wrapped up in themselves and their vision and their totalitarian distopia of game company management blindly leading the blind.
I mean... That fella who made No Mans Sky, all the abuse and nonsense he got... That fella knows how to make a game, that fella knows how to dig deep and deliver, theres a game developer that did hold up his hand and go ok, i messed up, let me make it up to you.
Theres a fella who deserves a game award.
Not this mob.
Yup. ED looks awesome.
But Space Engineers, NMS, X series, Eve Online, Euro Truck Sim 2, so on and so forth...
Vastly superior GAMES.
I relaised that after my wife said to me one day, I dont understand why you play that game? All you do is fly around and watch netflix/youtube/podcasts, how can you play a game that is so boring you just watch netflix?

She is has a professional background in mental health and gambling addiction.
Since then Ive finished half a dozen games on my to do list, played a while heap more and done some housework.

Now before you all jump on me, im just procrastinating when i should be finishing a paper on feminist history and felt like having a rant.
Like an ex smoker.
You should stop doing this, its not good for you.
Just. Step. Away. From. The. Joystick.
Peace out my fellow space captains.
May you forever reach for the stars.

You've decided you haven't got your moneys worth, though, right? At least, not in an acceptable time-frame?

Yes, I said this earlier. That has nothing to do with gambling. I used it as an example or poor communication (in my view). LEPs were sold (in 2015), the plan changed at some point where it became clear that those 2015 LEP holders would no longer receive good value within a reasonable timescale, and the communication of that was poor (in my view). I get the impression it was overlooked at the Frontier Expo 2017 'Beyond' launch.

Which is true for the last week. Now take a look again when a major update is around the corner and you'll see hundreds of dev posts about Elite including lots of live streams, Q&As, etc. In other words, you are most likely wrong.
As we await that hype in 2020...

So no big content till 2020 and that means flimflam for our community reps for a long long time.
Who will be left, who knows.
Are they running the game down to die, possibly.
Are they brave enough to engage once again, not a chance.
Do I trust or believe in Fdev, I do not.
I used to!

How did that happen? I hardly see any community involvement from FD on these very forums. It's next to nothing. Fake news anyone?
While I agree that community involvement should be much higher (especially on the forums), I also know how community involvement looks like in 99% of other studios. It basically doesn't exist. There are a handful of exceptions, but most studios don't communicate with their players at all, and when they do they certainly don't engage in discussions. When I send Brett a PM I usually get a reply within 12 hours. And that's just me, a random guy of 3.000.000 sold accounts. Try that with EA.

Someone being worse isn't any kind of a justification really.
