Lordy, hunting for HGEs is DULL!

I combine the assassination missions with farming any HGE's that are also in the same systems. It means I at least get some things I want (from the missions) and also breaks up the monotony that would drive me bonkers if ALL i was doing was farming HGE's.

I've filled my Imperial Shielding (to 100) 3 times in the past 2 days from the incidental HGE's that I've hit between the assassination missions. Minimal effort, no monotony, and have been able to trade them in for other materials that I need/want.
Now do this in open in a ganker hot spot system and you have all the makings of a typical CG :D

HGE’s are broken and that’s about all there is to say. I preferred the old way of super cruising in deep space. I always managed to fill up on whatever I was looking for although it could take a while. Previously I could get 100 PI’s in a couple of hours but now your lucky to find one spawn in that time. Material traders were a cheesy fix for a broken mechanic, i’d be happy if they left the persistent system for those who like it and added back the old RNG spawns.

I do these day in and day out. Sometimes they drop Military Grade Alloys, Imperial Shielding, CDC, Pharma Iso... I have not seen a single drop of PRAs from these Elite pirate lord conda or vette.

Yeah,

I do my share of assassination missions, as well as bothering convoys, cargo ships and passengers ships and it's usually okayish (I don't really keep track of what I collect as accurately as I should) but it's rarely properly impressive, to the point where I DO notice if I can collect something like a PI or EFC etc.

A couple days ago, I dropped into a HGE in my home system which is controlled by an Empire-backing MF. Their state was Expansion (also Boom but HUD said Expansion when HGE was targeted). I was fully expecting Imperial Shielding because that's all RNGesus seems to give me in this system regardless of state. To my surprise, I got a mix of Proto Radiolic Alloys and Proto Light Alloys. So ya, the game knows what you're looking for or expecting and it doesn't like to be predictable.

One secret to finding HGEs is to go to a system thats in Thargoid Infestation state (EE targeted) with the intention to kill scouts and then the games mind reading desire sensor will detect that you want to kill scouts and instead of NHSS' spawn you HGE's to try and ruin your evening. Foolproof.

It should be pointed out that your intention must actually be something else. You can't fool E: D by pretending to hunt scouts but actually wanting HGEs. If you want HGEs, it will give you scouts. :)

When you do manage to find the PRAs there's usually only a couple of them and the rest of them are PLAs which are only grade 4. I don't know why grade 4 mats spawn in HGEs.

However I haven't had an issue finding them since you can stop right at the star on your incoming jump and use the FSS and basically look at every USS available. If it's not there move along.

Faster to drop in on and scan the Nav Beacon - if speed and efficiency are your thang. ;)

Well, that's another 2 hours of looking for PRAs.

Found one HGE 27Kls away, with 40 seconds left on the timer.
Found another HGE (in a boom system) but it was in Outbreak state.
Dropped in just for the hell of it.
Scooped 15 Proprietary Composites.
If I find another 21 of those beauties I'll be able to take them to a mat' trader and swap them for a single PRA.

Go me!

Fly to a suitable system, scan the nav beacon, visit all the HGEs, go to another suitable system, repeat. Don't bother hanging around.

Seriously, tell me that I have to fly to Sag A to accomplish something, or destroy 100 Elite Cutters, and I'm on it.
As long as I know KNOW that what I'm doing is going to get me to my objective I'm fine with it.
Searching for HGEs, however, is just so goddam passive and uninvolving that it's ridiculous.
To be honest I can't imagine how looking for trash could be involving.
By definition you just loiter around, hoping to find wreck that hasn't been picked clean yet.

lol I don't know what I'm doing different (well, I kind of have a good idea/theory), but I'm >stuffed< with HGE Mats.

Just traversing the bubble, I found myself in Systems with upto 5 HGEs.
Multiple times I had to stop dropping into HGEs because the last one already told me "Material Storage Full" and needed to pitstop at the nearest Mat Trader :D

My technique :
  • plot a route through inhabited Systems (GalMap Filter : Allegiance, with filtered out "none")
  • pick a random course
  • make sure you buzz alot of "flyover" Systems, low-Population uninteresting ones
My theory :
  • Systems spawn HGEs at a certain rate, which can be drained by Players scooping them
  • Systems hardly ever visited will slowly fill up with HGEs over time, creating overlooked "Jackpot Systems" (like my 5x HGE 27k (!) Pop System yesterday)
Frankly, never been so happy about HGE spawn rates. Sometimes just a 7-hop 250LY trip in the bubble takes me a full hour - because I'm detracted scooping HGEs.

PS.
Alternatively - I'm just ultra lucky... because I don't need nor hunt any specific G5 Mats ...
You know the drill : the split Second you urgently need them, they become Unobtainium. But the moment you don't care... they're everywhere ;)

When doing my BGS work, I tend to stack up loads of all sorts of missions that often have many Anacondas come after me. Most of them drop high grade materials. I have managed to obtain many of mine just by doing those.

Although it has made me wonder why mission opponents don't all just turn up at once and dogpile on me - me vs 4 anacondas is a difficult fight that I'm not likely to win in the multirole ships that I'm likely to be using. Me against 3 (from different missions) is bad enough. And I actually want to win the fights, since I want to scoop the materials from their shattered remains. Nevertheless, one at a time does maximise my material gathering probability.

The HGE drop rate and type of drop is broken. Some peeps may be lucky, the majority are not no matter how you do the search.
7 days, two hours a day and three HGE's.
Don't down my back and tell me it's raining.
FD needs to look at this and fix it. Hopefully it's coming.

I think you get them from high-ranked condas that go boom. Missions as well. HGE are a supplemental stream of mats, dont rely on them as your go-to method. Its like 'dedicating your life to winning the lottery', not the most fun or smart way to go about getting some money. Als your 'trade blah blah blah' comment is a bit silly; pretty much doing anything would have gotten you enough to trade for them, so I am not sure why you think doing something that is less fun and less efficient is somehow a better approach?
HGE are in no way supplemental, since you can for the most part pick exactly the material you want by having the correct faction states, and at best not conflicting ones that can drop both materials of the conflicting states. If something is supplemental, it's the other methods, which are completely RNG.

Quick cheat - go to Dav's Hope and run around mode switching for a bit, then go to the Jameson's crash site and do the same thing. Head to a materials trader and trade everything up. Job done.

Not thrilling, but a damned sight quicker.

You need between 7-11 G5 rolls to max out a module. Let's take 9 as the average. You need 6 G4 materials for one G5 if they are in the same category, or 36 G4 materials for one crosstraded G5. That same conversion rate applies between the lower grades. G4 mats barely drop enough of themselves at Davs Hope, and you want to trade up ? Not practical at all and the worst grind imaginable.

I hear you OP. G4 is rubbish - I must have G5 everything to enjoy the game. /sarcasm
That's how I roll, got a problem with that ?

Combat logging on HGEs? :p
Pure self-defense against a currently way too punishing mechanic.

My thoughts exactly. Worse yet, population doesn't seem to have an effect on HGE spawn rate any more. I was looking for CDC yesterday. So checking out fed factions in state none. No HGE anywhere in sight in both a 15 and a 8 billion population. A cozy 2 billion system then had two....at a distance that required 5 minutes cruising even on full throttle and untargeting to avoid the overshoot, so the fastest way possible. They had 8 minutes on their clock left. So getting both was out of the question, and from the one I could reach I got barely three relogs before it expired.

I try to stack trade missions and kill all 4 Condas that come after me for every Mission I get that random event.
Even refitted my Python with bi-weaves to outlast all of them. This tends to give me all the mats I need.
This way. I haven't had to look for signal sources for months.

Oh, another thing I'll regularly do is trading stuff in the same catergory, so that I'm never full on stuff. Say for example I have 180+ G4 compound shielding, but only 10 G4 polymer capacitors, I'll trade the compounds to 100 or so down, so that next time I find them I have space in storage. This way I'm never empty on certain mats and full on others.

Frankly, I'd say the chances of getting PRAs by exploding ships is more akin to winning the lottery.

First you've got to find somewhere that the right sort of ship might appear.
Then you've got to hope that the right sort of ship does appear.
Then you've got to hope that the right sort of ship does drop the mat' you want when it goes boom.

And you've got to do that 3, 4 or 5 times to match the haul from one decent HGE.

Totally agree. I've been combat ranking at a Compromised Navigation Beacon. I'd say the odds of finding an Elite Anaconda are a minimum of 1 in 20 (spending up to an hour each visit). And that specific Anaconda dropping Pharmaceutical isolators double those odds. And that's on a good day!

I've killed several Type 10 Defenders and they did not drop any either.

Since the last update this is the only activity that has yielded Pharmaceutical isolators.
