Yes, another thread about Legs, but is this the breakthrough they were looking for?

Dont tell me what I backed and why. He didn't say that in those videos. They specifically talked about a future Elite was suppose to go and that was what was being sold. ALOT of people bought Elite for it's future. Not everyone was interested in a modern 1980's Elite, in fact I would say less did than the ones who were buying into another future.
I watched all the Kickstarter videos and Braben always said it's something they would like to do and if they manage to do it, it will be long time after release. If you based your purchase on something that wasn't even a promise I'd say you are to blame. Anyway, we'll know more about the future of Elite as we are approaching 2020.

I would imagine it would give scale to the whole universe. As of now, our avatars are ships, that is our bodies that we experience the world through.
Not too sure about you, but my avatar sits in the pilots seat of my ship. I can see his hands, body, legs and feet everytime I play.

I have a weird theory about Elite Dangerous. We (the players) are AI ships, not humans. We fly around the galaxy. We project a holographic image of a human to try to fool biological aliens, because our kind (AI) are hated throughout the galaxy. One noble race, the Thargoids, have made it their mission to wipe AI out of the galaxy. That is why they attack us and our stations.

This explains why we can't get out of our seats, why our holo-me's are holographic, how we can instantly teleport to someone else's ship, and why the Thargoids attack us.

Please don't give the dungeonmasters devs an excuse for teleprescence ! 😜

Didn't they already do this in the dino game? I thought that was one of the marketed tech features of it.
I don't know, which is why I ask the question in the OP. Maybe the dino tech is different somehow, but not having played it, I wouldn't be able to notice. And, of course, we haven't seen the new Zoo game either.

As a "retired" program manager for a major software firm, adding spacelegs with FPS to Elite would represent a major, major overhaul to the game and add an additional code base of at least half of what is already present in the game. Aside from this, even if the code existed in another game and could be copied and pasted, would break the game so bad, it may be unusable at first. The only way I could see this happening, is to fork the code of Elite, start with an alpha release as a separate branch of code, then move through the beta process with public testers before you could even speak about a released version of Elite "SpaceLegs". Total time, starting from today, at least three years to an alpha version, and five years to a beta, with a release another year after that. There are just too many changes needed to the existing game to break it now for spacelegs. It would most definitely have to be a fork of this game. I won't even mention the bug database, tracking, bug fixes and updates required during the entire process.

Star Citizen already has spacelegs, and it's still an alpha after six years and it's rought with bugs.

Given everyone who wants atmospheric langings as the next big upgrade, I just don't see spacelegs happening unless it's a different game entirely.
Unless they start with in-ship standing, walking about, maybe even confined to the station pad ?

Given the record of progress since Horizons first emerged, I'm inclined to agree with you about timescale and game complexity.

I do have the dino game, but haven't played it for a bit. Waiting until I get around to getting the extra DLC for it to see if I want to change anything around in my existing preserves, or whatever the correct nomenclature is.

Anyway, I seem to recall them talking about how the dinos could move around and adjust their legs and feet accordingly to the different terrain. Not sure if it's live though in the sense of if you were actively moving the ground under their feet.

Cheers.

Ships and SRVs float above or clip into the terrain in multiple locations on a no atmosphere surface.

I don't think the terrains are baked in Elite the way they are in JWE given all of the procedureal generation in Elite, and the fixed terrains in JWE.

It makes sense that managing clipping issues with procedural terrain would be tougher. There might be work arounds like dust (with concealing animations), low clinging fogs, etc. but it's still going to be pretty rough.

I can't count how many times I've passed through the mesh in SRVs and ships.

I don't think you have one in the normal FPV either, but I guess that's kind of a moot point anyway. Cheers.
Exactly, because the human avatar is pointless since it cannot do anything in the game... the player is a ship or an SRV.

Edit to add SRV
