Re: Abuse in space

Good evening fellow commanders

So far I've never encountered any problems with the chat in game. I've always found the players who I encounter to be kind courteous and helpful until tonight that is

I'm on my way to MAIA to buy a meta alloy so I can get the engineer section opened up. as I was talking someone popped into the chat and said some rather horrid English words that I'd rather not repeat

Am I being unreasonable to report the player in game?

Context? General direction of insults? Otherwise, unknown.

Is the swearing filter something that you have to turn off as opposed to something you have to turn on?

I’ve never come across any issues but am well aware of what to expect from some people in online games and not easily offended but I’m completely unaware of whether the default is on or off....or indeed where it can be found.

Turns the swear filter off, gets triggered by foul language...
I will never understand the people of today...
You don't even know if thats the case, and even if... The language filter is there to get a teen rating, for a game played mostly by adults.

The report function was made for a reason, use it if you need it.

Have to agree with @Lateralus, who cares what a rude person says? Technically it is not them that annoyed you, it is yourself, because you made the choice of allowing them to affect you with mere words.

We cannot control how other people behave and, unfortunately, when online there's always people like this. All we can control is how we personally are impacted by them. Choose the high road and just go about your business without letting it get under your skin.

I find this behaviour by other people online both juvenile and rude, but don't waste my time reporting or reacting. Do that, and they win, because what they wanted was to get some kind of reaction.

Also should point out that this is a global game and different cultures have different reactions to various profanity. The Australians and Irish folks I have associated with over the years, for example, are incredibly foul mouthed by my (mid-western United States) standards. It's just cultural differences you gotta learn to accept sometimes.

I've not turned the filter off but having words with **** I can fill in those blanks lol. I was just really annoyed. My evening was spoilt by a stupid person.

The block player function will mean you never have to read anything from that player again. It also decreases your chances of being instanced with them. If you feel it's excessive (racist etc rather than just generally more vulgar language than you're comfortable with) you could report them. If FDev receive several reports about the same player (from different players) they may take action.

Who cares what people say honestly.

Upset by masked swearing? lol, wee bit sensitive?
I actually am tonight. Only a little bit. I've been trying so hard to make my little children understand that being nice to other people is a fundamental in being a good human and it comes back to you ten fold then I have a good couple of hours in the PC and just as I'm finishing up and about to power down some idiot decides to throw in a few heart felt words.. A bit upset but may only be a bit.. But a lot of bits make up a big byte out of my faith in humanity..

Hang in there @PaxtonNewt. There are still a ton of decent people out there as well. Try not to let the handful of bad ones be the focus. They tend to stand out more, because all of the polite, nice players are mostly just going about their business and letting you do the same. So consider all of the peaceful days of no negative interactions and realize, there were other players there, politely letting you play your game.

Thank you..

FWIW, I didn't even know there was a swear-filter in the game until a thread here prompted me to look for it.

It was set (presumably by default) to "off".

Seems like the default setting should probably be "on".

I have installed the game 3 times in the past 2 months (2 computers, 1 which I uninstalled then reinstalled), and it defaulted to "on" every single time, so the default is "on" as far as I can tell. At least it is for me.

I actually turn it off, because I prefer to see what people are saying even if I do not like it, but the installation had it on every time.
