Lack of info, Leaks and Cheating... my considerations and my suggestion

The game is in temporary "maintenance mode"... We all know this but this doesn't mean we're all fine with that.

Oh, ... speak for forself. As for me, I am still enjoying flying around (on two accounts), and don't really need to be constantly spoonfed information. Actually, I prefer the current tone of semi-optimistic speculation to the usual rabid negativity that flows following updates, or sometimes even the announcment of updates.

I don't see in the current cheating issue a lot of optimism. It's also true that many people are positively hyped because of the space legs leak.. but still that's all based on speculations and not official statements

And yet it had quite a lot of stuff in it - the new buying/selling screens, the SC Assist, the advanced docking computer, the starter systems...

Yup, and a whole new bouquet of new and reappearing bugs.
A new Initiative with weeks of doing nothing followed by a CG with a replica multicanon which needs grinded materials to make it somewhat different as reward.
I wish Fdev concentrated a bit more on the maintenance aspect, solve some long standing bugs etc.

But what do I know, I'm not on the design team and don't know how to make a game, so it all must be just dandy, right?

Leak aside, there's been plenty of speculation threads which are always better than whinging, imo. The cheating, well that's a different matter, unrelated to the 'maintenance mode' nonsense or FDevs communication strategy, and not really on my radar... whenever I see a video that has the bandwidth & FPS displayed in the corner, or hear people going on about macros and voice commands, I miss PC gaming... until I am reminded about the chronic hacking and cheating.

You really believe that those "Leaks" are not controlled by FD to check how the acceptance in the community is?

It's probably something like there's only a small team updating the current game (so they don't have the manpower to do anything groundbreaking) while the rest of the staff is building the next big thing.

I've never said so. I also believe there is more behind the scene of the leaks, but AGAIN we're left with speculations only, which is my main point.

The point is more about the communication rather than the content size

I'm kind of on the fence about them communicating more. On the one hand, yes obviously I'd love to know what's coming up, but on the other hand I don't want them to be seen to be making promises where they're not. They've been bitten by this before. Plans change, priorities alter.

I don't think they will be binning that last 12 months work - I just wish they would just come straight out and tell us that they WILL NOT reveal ANYTHING until shareholders give the nod.

As for cheating and punishment / banning - they don't want to discuss that either.

The door is locked, lights are turned off and curtains drawn and no matter how many times you knock they will not answer the door.

LACK OF INFO:
The game is in temporary "maintenance mode". We will not receive important announcement before 2020 and all other announcements will be preceded by an announcement of an announcement. We all know this but this doesn't mean we're all fine with that. Two important contents from last year (Fleet Carriers and Ice Planets) have been postponed. FDEV said they would have been re-prioritized after Beyond, but after six month since the end of it no information is still available.
While on one side the lack of transparency and info could be justified by a typical business model, on the other side it can't be accepted for such a long time if they can't properly manage the free flow of speculations and keep them to a reasonable level, which is not the case (see following).

We're receiving something like total radio silence.

LEAKS:
This is exactly the consequence of the above. We have a "deep throat" that is providing time to time information about future contents, some of them already confirmed.
Frontier never said anything about this leak. It's interesting to remember that another leak was revealed several months ago about a SRV exit animation and FDEV promptly replied that it was not an official concept (Will reply) - Video -
The leak about Elite Dangerous reports Legs and Base Buildings. No mention about atmospheric planets or other contents.
More recent leaks showed the 3D model of a Thargoid, confirming FPS and shooting aliens gameplay.
This is an escalation of speculations. At this point some information concerning the future of the game is due.

No one can confirm leaks when FDev refuse to comment on them. Of course, that's what they should d if they want to keep their surprises.

CHEATING:
I didn't follow too much this cheating story for two reasons:
  • I play solo and when I play Open I don't do it for PvP anyway.
  • I don't care if someone decides to cheat. Cheats is the shortcut to burn your own fun so most of the cheaters will soon(TM) leave the game.
A couple of days ago we had the biggest protest so far, with the Beluga blocking the entrance of James Memorial.
Frontier did nothing about it and again, no communication was given.
However it seams that cheating has been going on since months/years but no one ever complained so loud until recently. It's also interesting to see that for the upcoming small game patches most people keep wishing for their own favourite feature rather than a definitive solution to this problem (see here the discussion about the next update wishes).
That's why I think that the Cheating story is just the "Straw that breaks the camel's back" (that's how you say this in English I guess). So it's the last event that will cause the catastrophic failure (just to make a bit of drama).

Don't you even care about what open players feel? No one (you thought) ever complained because it never went public like this. Everyone, or almost everyone, thought FDev was giving the cheaters the consequences they deserved. Well they were not. If the cheaters only lose what they cheated to get, they'll just cheat again. I mean, why not? It's just that obvious.

CONCLUSIONS:
FDEV could clear all this situation up by making a frank and clear statement and publishing a clear roadmap. Not a detailed one but with clear indications of the direction of the game in terms of type of contents and new gameplay under development.
I'm sure this will not turn down the interest in the game, on the contrary it will improve the quality of interest and it will lead it to the right direction.

Or they totally shut up and pretend nothing happened like what they are doing now, and announce content when it is the right time. Nothing will change, after all.

They should not reveal their complete plan.
They have people paid to manage marketing and communication so they should know how much info and the level of detail to share.
They should announce as much as it is required to stop wild speculations and show the development direction:
  • if it's about something that was promised and discussed multiple times during the kick-starter campaign
  • if it's a global rework and improvement of the current game assets
  • if it's something completely new that has never been announced nor discussed before.

No. It isn't.
For the moment it kind'a is. Frontier said this year won't have any major updates, only small QoL updates with fixes, that's pretty much maintenance. However, it's in maintenance for the reason that they're working on the next big update. So it's both in maintenance and development mode in a sense.

This is not a realistic scenario. I'm quite sure someone in the marketing is following up what happens here and deciding on the next move. We should also give signs to influence their decisions of course, and this is what I'm trying to do with this discussion. If many people agree with the OP then this is already a sign that it can't be completely ignored. This already happened last August.
The community insistend so much on a feedback that in the end they provided some information even if this was not completely mature, but they said enough to stop bad speculations.
