First post! Elite with Oculus Rift S.

So far. Loving the game.

New to ED and VR. Jumped right in both feet. Using a couple commands in voice attack and the touch controllers.

Only having two issues
-I am having are the galaxy map - setting up anything isn't working - need to mess with some settings.
-doing combat - I am always looking around, and when I look up and left - I always activate the comm system, and then lose control till I look away.

Other than that.. wow - what a game.

For your issue with your comms screen - in the settings you’ll need to change it from “look to activate” to “press to activate” (or whatever the labels are). It was one of the the first things I did for all my panels when I got VR.

I use a Xbox 360 gamepad which has a good default set of bindings, might be worth thinking about as it’s got a few more buttons than the Touch controllers.

Also, [engage Morpheus voice] Welcome...to the real world [/Morpheus] :)

Welcome to the forums CMDR!
Elite in VR is indeed quite an experience and i enjoy each and every session. I play this game for more than 4 years now, 3 years in Vr, and it still amazes both audio-visually and with its awesome mix of simulation and arcade mechanics.
I recommend taking at least a look at a HOTAS solution for both full immersion and ease of control input, though.

To answer your questions:

As Arioch already said, you can configure the displays, so they only open, when you press a button.

The galaxy and system maps were always problematic in VR, but mapping controls to two sticks (One for move left right forward backward and one for up down and zoom) makes navigation quite comfortable. If no controls are accepted, you might have focus on the left hand info panel.

Enjoy your stay and fly dangerous!

Be seeing you in the void CMDR! o7

Make sure you have the grid enabled on you galactic map.

I wouldn't use the touch controllers if i were you. But I don't have an Oculus S and I've heard there are hassles if you don't use them.

I have a CV1, and I use a gamepad as a controller. To supplement my buttons I use a foot switch which acts as a modifier button. That doubles the number of buttons on my gamepad.

The touch controllers are not 'easy' to use in ED, might I suggest you get a HOTAS? Even the Thrustmaster Hotas X (which isn't expensive) makes a huge difference in play.
Hope you are enjoying the Rift S - do you have the occasional brief flash while using it?

Welcome to VR land!

I love it. For the panels, as everyone has already mentioned. In the interface option, set all of the panels to ignore. I have a shift button and then one of my hats to active the four panels.

Yeah and as everyone has again already mentioned, the galmap is a pain BUT it can be cool when you get used to it. I think it is like Star Trek's Stella-cartography Lab! To control it I treat it like a spaceship, so I have the same 6 degrees of movement that I use for the ship.

Now go learn FA off and hit some trenches!

I use a Rift-S, coming from the CV1, and there is no problem playing without the touch controllers. I launch the game from the Frontier launcher and it jumps right in, without even touching one of the controllers. Oculus home is complaining though when the controllers can't be found, but it does not prohibit playing without them.

Edit - and i can only second Franks statement to go for a more fixed input solution. Ive built a cockpit for Elite and having a total blast since then. There is thread here in the VR section, showing the input rigs of VR pilots. Worth a visit for sure.

Frank_G, I'm glad to hear that the Oculus S isn't as bad as I'd heard.

I have to agree with andysonofbob. I find the VR version of the map easier to use. I find it easier to work out the best path to take through points in 3D space.

That would solve the problem!

I've found the touch controlers to work quite well - except for the galaxy map - specifically the window with all the info.. I'll dive in to the settings more.

I'm thinking of a hotas -but with reno's I have talk the wife up a bit 8)

I can’t recommend enough getting a HOTAS setup. It is the ‘natural’ control configuration for flight. I use the Oculus Rift S with the Logitech X56 HOTAS. Even though the VR cockpit visually IS the X52, I chose the X56 because I wanted the 3xtra functions available with the additional controls/inputs it provides.

Actually, the Rift-S is superior to the CV1 in all but one aspect and that is sound... They could have left that piece of junk of a speaker out of the system to save weight and costs. Everything else is pure fun, especially the brillant visuals. The higher resolution and the optimized sub-pixels even allow to play with HMD quality / SS set to 1.0, which makes it more performant than the CV1, while delivering far better results. I am really happy, that i upgraded.

Have you tried these settings for sound?

...for some odd reason it makes the little speakers sound much better (& louder) - I use these settings and can use the built-in for most stuff - but for proper high quality sound the headphones have to come out.

Yeah, that was one of the first things I checked. I'm putting my headphones around my neck with a boom mic - it works...

Never Give Up! Never Surrender!

Hi All,

I posted this in another thread, but then found this one, which seems more relevant to my question, can you help, please?

I'm really keen to get into VR, and was considering getting an Oculus Rift S, but I'm now worried that my specs are I bit low, and I'd be wasting my money (I cant afford a new graphics card and Oculus S at the minute)

Any opinions on whether this rig will be acceptable enough? :-

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K (4 cores 8HT) - 4GHz
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060-6GB
RAM: DDR3 1600 C9 2x8GB
SSD: Samsung 860 Evo 500G (Running in 'Rapid Mode')

' User benchmark (online results)

Asus Z97-A Performance Results - UserBenchmark

any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Forgot to say, it's for playing ED Horizons :)

What setup are you running yous on?

Cheers,
Nick

You should be fine with that setup Nick, if in the future you can get a 'next generation' GPU you'd benefit from more eye candy, but still perfectly good as it stands.

Cheers Ratkatcher,
that's great news - I feel my credit card is about to crash and burn any minute :)
VR here I come - will post here, once I get one, and let people know how it goes, performs etc.

I feel like a big kid - albeit a 52 year old one :)

Cheers again,
Nick

I started VR with a Rift CV1, a 4690k i5 and a GTX970, which was enough, to play Elite in low to medium settings. You are totally fine to join the club. Just don't expect to play games with maxed out settings.
I never regretted a single cent, that i spent on VR so far. Its definitely the ultimate game changer for me. Go for it :)

Edit: 49 here and be prepared to get the wows like being a kid again... No joke, playing games in VR is absolutely stunning.
