We knew this day would come

The thargoids have attacked professor pailin's outpost and you cannot access any of the services when docked there. Now we know the thargoids could possibly begin to attack planetary bases. They understand to some degree our social structure as they chose this outpost to be their first planetary assault presumably because of professor pailin's research and engineering services. We should begin talks about organizing a counter offensive.

Go Thargoids.....Go!!!.....Destroy this stupid human race, they actually believe that we have landed on the moon in 69...hahaha

Yeah. Pretty crazy huh...

But clean drives are pretty crap anyway, so no big loss if you ask me. Unless you had them pinned instead of dirty drives for a ultra-specialized build.

Clean (for some reason) uses more power than dirty drives, has worse performance numbers, and the thermal reduction is often not all that extreme. They may have a small benefit because of increased thruster activity when exploring planets, but your plant effeciency seems to affect your temperature much more than your drives do. Even lower grades like G3 of clean are sufficient, to keep that power draw down on an undersized plant.

Trust me, I’ve done science!

I was testing thruster/plant combos for my DBS, trying to find what offered the best balance of performance/heat management with Silent Running engages. Turns out the choice for what I wanted to do(stay cool, but still be nimble) was Dirty Drives and a Low Emissions plant.

DBS plants and drives and s—-

#1
Plant: Armored G3, No experimental
16.76mw/0.37 eff
78% total usage

Drives: Dirty G5 drag drives (32% usage)

All modules on
Idle heat: 19%
Idle to 100% - boosting (6 boosts, 0:26)
Idle to 100% - stationary^ (1:26)

Idle to 100% - stationary^ (4:21)
Idle to 100% - cruising (4:10)

^Zero throttle, not accounting for thruster activity caused by stick drift

For those of you who don’t have DD5 pinned, or haven’t unlocked palin yet, we’ll get him back eventually!

But now it's getting interesting! I'm not in the game right now, hope I'm not falling for a hoax. I slowly start to regret that I'm 10KLy out and also was never engaged in Thargoid combat.
So all what is left to do for now is watching the scenery from afar...
I agree. It's exciting and weve never seen this behavior before. The they are actually interfering with things that affect everyone now. HopefuIly this will lead to more interesting things like other engineers or popular areas going down. Could you imagine if sothis and ceos got hit? I'm not at my console now but when I get home I'm going to make a quick trip out to pailin to confirm this is true. If it isnt I'll make a correction/ apology in the OP.

That's your opinion though. Its not shared by everyone. Explorers always use G5 clean and other builds that run hot but cant afford to reduce the pp output benefit from it. Yeah the pp does more to help it but so what? Maybee I'm building a stealth build and I'd rather have that additional 40 seconds in silent running.

Yeah. Pretty crazy huh...

A ha! You fell for it!
You think that humanity actually landed on the moon in '69 but you're wrong!
It was all staged!
In reality, they hired Stanley Kubrick to direct a movie about a fictional landing on the moon...

What you can see when you look up there is not the lander at all, it's just props and set dressing from when Kubrick's team went to film on site.

Opinion backed by facts. All those numbers I dropped were literally from a stealth build, with silent running engaged. Outside of silent it likely wouldn't make a huge difference, unless you were really getting crazy with maneuvers over a planet's surface.

It doesn't change the fact that G3 clean is more than enough for exploration builds, except maybe on a Beluga, or something extra toasty. If I remember right, even G2 was enough for my exploration T9.

Your numbers showed a 40 second increase in silent running time at cruising speed with Clean Drives. That's not an insignificant increase.

I checked out Achenar 3 the other day in he same ship, and didn’t have any issue.

I’ll try my much hotter T6 later for more science later, just to see. Dirty grade 5, overcharged plant, etc.

I know for a fact it will get warm above common, lower gravity planets if I get too excited with boosting.

I actually swore by clean drives on my Scout for the longest time. I was convinced that they were much better than dirties for my specific case.

But I wanted more speed. I needed drives that used less than 40% power, so I wouldn’t get stranded against malfunction attacks.

I could either use a lesser grade of low emissions, or switch to the less power hungry dirties.

That was the whole reason for my testing. I thought that the heat generated by boosting would see a more drastic reduction, but most of it came from general cruising. Casually cruising in combat is simply something you don’t do— at least, you shouldn’t. The switch was worth the minor increase.

Perhaps things were different before 3.0, we’ll have to poke around the forum some.

I don't do Clean Drives, I only like them Dirty. Have DD BP pinned and I usually go to Farseer after remote engineering to get the experimental effect.

That being said, I'm more than ready for this fight, been itchin' ever since they left.
