General / Off-Topic How Much Water Do You Use Each Day? It Might Shock You.

China has already tried to tap in to Russian biggest in the world supply of Freshwater, lake Baikal in 2017, but people woke up recently and began massive protests to stop the project: https://phys.org/news/2019-03-fuelled-china-russians-protest-baikal.html

Surprisenly Russian government went along with this project. I would think they would save this future gold mine for later bargains.

Damn, I didn't know about that. That's ridiculous! My distant relatives live there, I should ask them about it.
But what should I do if I live in a flat, where I can't install a rain tank and an extra flush system, though I would like to. According to this article, I think I use 100 L daily... Toilet, shower, dishes, cooking... Though lately I've been washing my hair very carefully because of my new hair color which doesn't mean I use less water now, quite opposite.

Well, since you use roughly 1700 liter of water to produce a burger, you can stay in the shower for twice as long for more than a month, every time you only eat one burger instead of two.

It comes into my basement at a rate of over 10 us gal/minute. Still working on ways of actually doing something with all that.

There is some stuff that can help save some water, like toilets with 2 separate flush volumes (one shorter for peepee and one larger for sinking brown submarines), and there are systems that recuperate shower water to use in the toilet (I don't have one of those unfortunately).

I do a hand wash once a week, no washing machine. Same with baths, no shower, so I have a bath 1-2 times a week depending how much time I have free to run one and get in it. I do know it takes about 40-45l to get enough in the bath for me though, with the displacement from my body mass taking up the rest. Maybe 5 1L jugs to rinse my hair afterwards.
Is the OP's water heated by a gas boiler? I know when I visit friends whose houses have gas (I live 20 floors up, so my building cannot legally have a gas hookup for safety reasons) it takes forever of running their taps to get hot water, where mine comes straight out of my hot tank to my tap in seconds. It only takes a minute or so to heat up for a few weeks in the middle of winter when the pipes are extremely cold.
I only do a load of dishes maybe twice a week, can't imagine needing to do them multiple times a day, but I live alone, so presumably a family would need to do them several times as often as me. I never have more than a single sink load to do, and it's only once the drying rack is empty and the sink is full again that I'll wash it all.

I'd be surprised based on the OP's numbers if I use more than 70L in a day.

My water rates are calculated based on an estimate by the water company (My building has a communal supply, so meters are impossible) and my bills are around £1/day. Thankfully I live in a city with massive reservoirs up in the hills nearby which are unlikely to run dry any time in the foreseeable future. They were designed with far greater need in mind than there ever ended up being. Flooding's a more realistic problem here.

Yeah, I have one of those toilets.

Since I believe in the interconnectedness of all things on this planet and find life to be very precious, I try to be painstakingly careful to not needlessly waste anything. My life has no more value than another person's. Cause and effect, action/reaction are ever at work and the end result of a cascade of reactions resulting from a single action/cause is still vastly more complicated than man at his current technological level is able to discern.

So yeah, I do not use a lot of water.

I can not believe this !
The full week's worth of underwear, three or four tank tops, any socks I may have worn if I went out any particular day, two pairs of trousers, the two towels I used for my baths. It's not a big wash. I don't have any particularly strenuous work which makes me sweat, so most times a top will last me 2 days and some jeans way more. Generally I wash my leggings far more often than jeans.
No need to wash stuff until it gets dirty.
Save water doing it all at once.

Also, it helps when all your clothes are the same colour, like mine, since it means no fear of them running if you wash them together.

I was talking about washing your hands once a week.

Only once a week ?

I can not believe it.
