Celebrating 35 years of Elite!

As a gift for every Commander, head over to the in-game store, and you will be able to claim your own Retro Thargoid Bobblehead, available until 23 September (16:00 UTC) for 1 ARX.
That's called a lie. You give me a gift and I have to pay for it?
You can either make a gift or sell something. They are mutally exclusive.

Cheers
Blaidd Drwg

P.S.: You'll manage to make me abandon you and your game. A game I really like. Just keep working on it.

CMDR: Ian Poggel:

I remember I first saw ELITE on a BBC computer at school, I was amazed and instantly started bugging my parents for a computer so I could play this awe-inspiring game. Six months later after hours of nagging I got my first ZX Spectrum computer and a copy of ELITE. I read "The Dark Wheel" about 10 times, was frustrated by the "LENSLOK" countless times and even managed to try the very first mission called Supernova!.

My best memory is launching Elite Dangerous the first time and seeing its beauty. Flying in a Sidewinder until I could upgrade only, there was a steep climb. But after (somewhat) getting the hang of it I flew around exploring the void and finding all sorts of things. Voyager, Neutron stars, great plains to race or canions to fly. Each experience enchanting my memories of Elite. I know that this is the game for me. But my best memory is still taking out my Sidewinder for the first time and seeing space for the first time! o7

CMDR NAME: Terrorfirma

I played the original 1984 version of Elite on my Commodore 64 and loved it! Finding out the Elite: Dangerous game had come out brought back nostalgia and excitement. I had to try it. I have been playing since 3301 (game year). My favorite memories in game would be being a part of the original Distant Worlds journey - I decided to go in the very last week before launch! I was at the mass jump from Sag A* where over 100 CMDRs hyperspacesd away from the black hole. That was great fun. I also loved the community involvement and excitement surrounding the Salome' event!

CMDR Pinkerbell here, my best memory of year 1 was finally getting into a cobra and finally getting to go against the dreaded Anaconda. That cobra lasted me a long while. Kinda miss those days. NOTE I still own that sidewinder I got when I started the game. It's permanently docked in LHS 3447. It's a good memory. Will cherish that little ship :)

Can you land on a planet and drive around gathering mats for an hour or two? I earned some Arx doing that the other day...
Sure. I'll try that.

--edit

Strange thing. On my alt account, I'm sure I had 1 arx this morning, which now is gone.🤷‍♂️

My greatest Elite memory:

This was years ago before engineers would tune our ships and thargoids were still just a rumour. I was flying my trusty Asp Explorer, the Astraios, smuggling goods and data from the outskirts of human space a couple hundred lightyears to the inner systems, a multitude of pirates and mercenaries on my tail the whole way. Each hyperspace jump a teeth clencher, each new system my pursuers greeting me over comms and trying their best to interdict me. I was on the edge of my seat, adrenaline coursing through my veins. And with every delivered ton of cargo and data package I sighed with relief. Just one security scan and I would have failed all missions. But somehow against all odds I prevailed. What a game!

Seeing Elite for the first time on the BBC micro at my friends house in 1985 (?), and being totally amazed. Then picking it up on the ZX Spectrum and not seeing daylight for about a year ;)

My favourite memory of the Original ELITE??? Where to start I’ve got so many, the game literally changed the face of gaming. Overnight it went from ‘jet set willy’ platform games to an open ended SPACE GAME. Now to put this in to context I am an original ‘Star Wars baby’ and just as those 3 original movies helped open my imagination to new possibilities and galaxies then in 1984 ELITE gave all that imagination a place to live, thrive and grow. From that first day of play Gaming and ELITE become an important of what, in time, became ME. It even brought myself and my annoying younger brother closer. Instead of fighting over the computer (it was his but I was six years older) we worked together, taking turns to be pilot and copilot, one plotting the destination and cargo the other flying. Maybe I should actually get my mum to post how ‘ELITE created world peace’ in our house.

CMDR ryan123rudder here

My favorite memory has to be woth CMDR Calen and CMDR Haunted. I got a message on the Cannon Discord about some madman named Haunted making a circumnavigation expedition. I thought, “Why not” and propmtly convince Calen do do it too. We spent a week to get Condas, and we joined Haunted at Colonia. We headed up to Beagle, and made a circle around the galaxy. We talked on voice chat, and he has since become one of my best online friends, we talk every week. We’ve gone bounty hunting, mining, exploring, and everything in between together. Cheers to you Haunted and Calan, fly safe o7

Favourite memory: Couldn't beat the early game in Frontier: Elite II for me. Booting up the game, the unmistakeable theme tune with the Imperial clipper. Dreaming of the possibilities while watching the credits slowly roll in on the olde trade route, looking out for the 'luxury goods wanted' messages on the Sol bulletin boards, gradually working up through the ships: Cobra, Tiger, Puma and finally the unstoppable panther clipper, with ridiculous levels of shields and a plasma accelerator. Happy days!

Happy anniversary and thanks for giving us games to totally get lost in. Right on, Commanders!

Favorite moment(s):
The whole Formidine Rift mystery in ED was one of my highlights. All the theory crafting and searching vast areas of space for a needle in the haystack was immense fun. (Cmdr name is Tharrn).

So many fond memories of 1984 Elite it's hard to choose just one, but I do recall being particularly happy when I finally tracked down and destroyed the ellusive stolen constrictor ship and completed that mission and getting the reward of something (better shields?) I remember being so happy and telling my family (who had no idea what I was talking about) It took a long time for that mission I thought then, but it now seems minor compared to the hours required for certain E : D missions!

My favorite memory of the original Elite on Amiga has been discovering about the special missions and being offered to take down the Constrictor (which i did).
cmdr. KARINE-JOHANNE

I’ve been addicted to David Braben’s games from my Amiga days, but especially Starglider 2 and Virus.

CMDR Kitty259 here, I have one pretty amazing memory from the most recent game in the franchise, Elite Dangerous:
I was bounty hunting in multicrew with my boyfriend who was in my ship with me (yes, female irl cmdr here!) and I saw a wing of 3 Anacondas. The last time I found a wing like that I wasn't able to take them out cause I needed ammo and scbs in my FDL. But this time, I was in my Krait MKII and had two fighters to help me! Now of course, this was a hard task. I don't remember their combat ranks, but I know they were high. Now this fight was one of the most intense fights I ever had, especially because my Krait wasn't fully engineered, I had Bi-weave shields, not Prismatics on the thing! I'm pretty sure my Bi-weaves with good resistance is what helped my shields not drop, but especially the extra pip on systems from my boyfriend in multicrew! He did a great job using my fighters, which at the time were Taipans with fixed beams. I don't think my fighter pilot was even Elite at this point and he's been Elite now for a long time. It was definitely an awesome memory!
