Killed my Rift...

After three wonderful years together a momentary lapse of concentration saw me tripping over the wire and sending my Rift headset flying across the room. The left screen has been cracked, so it’s a write-off. Beyond gutted. :( (and with Fleet Carriers just around the corner)

Anyway, I’m looking for recommendations regarding a new headset. My initial reaction was to replace it with a Rift S as soon as possible (having lost a limb), but looking at the specs and questionable design decisions I’m thinking that it may be better to save for something at the higher end of the market.

Where would your money go if you were buying a new headset in the near future? Given recent events, the Vive Cosmos with a wireless adapter has its appeal. Any thoughts/advice appreciated. I’m running a RTX 2080.

If I had a choice - I would buy again Rift S (athough I have CV1)..

Thanks Meresiga - yes, the only thing that worries me slightly is reports of a narrower FOV and the cheaper screen tech (lack of deep blacks). I know that darkness perception is relative, but still. It probably wouldn't worry me if Elite weren't my main VR title. Any Rift S users out there? :)

As a proud Rift S owner since last weekend I can say I have no problems with the black.
Might be because I'm in Colonia (it's full of stars) or because I pew pew most of the time, but the black doesn't bother me.
I chose the rift because it is simple to set up, no external sensors, good as a first headset.

Wow...stumbeld upon this thread and saw your Avatar and instantly thought by myself: "God No! He got his Rift and crashed it 48h later???"
I'm glad to see it wasn't yours...Sorry OP!

I'm still happy with my CV1 and if I hadn't bought a TM Warthog i also had a thought about buving the Rift S

Hmmm...am I a Rift-fangal?

I work with a number of headsets. Rift, Rift-S, HP Reverb, Vive Pro, the new Valve Index. IMHO, the Rift S is the one I prefer for comfort and usability - especially since I wear glasses. (In fact I have three of those sitting at my desk, and generally used the Rift S). You'll have contrast issues with just about any LCD-based headset, but honestly, the 'grey' of space really doesn't bother you after you get use to it. I also think its probably the best value for money.

My only complaint about it is sound quality - which is why I use either a headset or 5.1 sound with my Rift-S - the built in speakers are not that great.

Having had the CV1 Vive Pro with lens mod, and now i have the HP Reverb, i can recommend the HP. It's lightweight, comfortable, good sound and WOW Graphics! Tracking is ok for sit down games like ED/Car racing games. Sweet spot could be bigger, but 'mien Got' the clarity is best of field (Currently)

Its not a bad headset if:
A) You don't wear glasses
B) You have a powerful machine with a decent graphics card (RTX 2080TI recommended)
Horrible/heavy/non-flexible cable though, and its windows mixed reality - which I find a bit clunky (elite must be in steam library, and you need to use a third party steam app to use WMR devices with steam games).

I don't wear glasses, but i also run my Verb on a 1080Ti, not a million miles away from a 2080, but you certainly don't need a 2080 to run the verb.

It is NOT Heavy at all, and it is the same weight as the CV1. The cable is not an issue playing ED (Sat Down). Elite does not have to be in Steam Library, but you do have to run steam, i am not sure that is an issue, but if you hate Steam then obviously it is. I run my 3 ED accounts all from the desktop, and don't go into steam lib at all.

Can recommend the rift s not too expensive and a nice overall upgrade on the cv1 downside is the sound but i prefer my heaphones and they fit nicely over the s

The Oculus Quest (provided Elite is compatible) - yesterday Oculus announced that the Quest link will be available in November, allowing it to play most Rift games - so you can use it with a PC or totally wire free!

Woops you're right I had forgotten it does not need to be in steam. It's been a few weeks since I've booted up the reverb with ED (since it's rather uncomfortable with my glasses)

The Rift S is on my "to get someday" list (right now the wife insists it's her turn to spend a lot of money, LOL), so I'm glad so many ED players are having success with the Rift S.

They are? Mine's been a dream with the exception of the poor sound. Way better then my older Rift. A friend of mine also bought his about the same time, seems OK for him in ED as well. What problems are you hearing about?
