Pah phooey - myth busted

I often read here that SagA is an over run tourist spot.

Go 20ly in any given direction from Explorers Anchorage and you’ll find virgin systems just waiting to be mapped. In fact the stars are so dense in that area you can barely move without finding new stuff.

Anyone else based out of Explorers Anchorage?

I've thought about moving out there for a while. Haven't done it yet though. I tend not to stay in one place for long, with the exception of the bubble, but even there it's usually no more than a month.

I’ve decided to stay a while, shipped out my mining gear - took three days and cost a small fortune. It’s nice cause if you want to jet off to the other side of the galaxy it’s half the distance (as opposed to the bubble). EA also stocks quite a bit of stuff now. When I first visited it was still very much under construction but now it’s a proper station.

Yeah, SagA area isn't really that "discovered"

I did spend plenty of time in the core, but I've found that sooner or later, the extremely "busy" night sky always gets on my nerves.
With EA though, there's another thing to consider: it's smack in the middle of the suppression zone. Whether that's good or bad is debatable, I guess.

I mean, there are still undiscovered places really close to Colonia, if you want some quick exploration data (you can just see some red dots on this screenshot, zoom level is slightly further out than the SagA one, but it's still showing about 60000 stars at once based on my game config).

I avoided that trip for about two years. On my last fly-a-bout I turned left instead of right to go ahead a git-er'-dun but that lasted only long enough to take that 'mandatory' screen shot. I'm tweaking my ship and rig now and have disabled my turn-left button.

Not sure what the colours mean? Is red discovered and blue not?

Red is unvisited, Blue is visited.

That's how it's always been in the Galaxy Map in game. I'm not doing anything special with the colours.

It should be added that it's "discovered by an EDSM user"; you can make these maps by using an EDSM data dump and replacing your "visited stars" cache file (which is saved locally on your computer) with one generated using EDSM data. It turns the "visited stars" filter into an effective "explored stars" filter.

EDSM records discoveries as they are made, while the game awards Tags only when the data is sold. So it's entirely possible that some of those red stars have been discovered by non-EDSM-users (who sold the data but don't use EDSM). And many of those blue stars are "discovered by EDSM", but have not yet had the data sold in-game (either because the discoverer is still out exploring, or has stopped playing before selling the data, or they exploded and lost the data).

So it's not a flawless system, but it's better than nothing (which is what the game currently gives you, in terms of an answer to the question "has this star been explored by anyone else yet or not?").

Yup - that's exactly it. See my signature for a link to my premade VisitedStarsCache files based off EDSM data. Saves you doing all the work :)

Not sure 2D can do that area justification, there are so many stars on each level and 1000 levels.

I’ve finished mining for now so later in the week I’ll start exploring/tagging. First I’ll just hit everything between 30-40ly away so I can sell the data back at Explorers Anchorage.

While I understand there is a difference between visited and tagged I don’t see why anyone would come all this way and not tag anything, let alone enmasse.

So I have been flying around for a while upto 3-400ly from Explorer Anchorage and its true 90% of the systems I hit are un discovered. My only conclusion to the maps shown is

1) people who travel this far dont bother discovering, they just push on through
2) The maps generated are widely inaccurate/broken
3) Its a government conspiracy trying to keep us away

I am currently going up - never been up, collecting matts to enable boosted jump range where necessary

Elaborate on how you have determined that the data is incorrect or broken ? The data is from EDSM.

Remember that image is ONLY 60000 stars, and only the ones visible from that zoom level and at that angle. It does not cover the viewpoint from the ceiling to the floor of the core, plus systems further away will be obscured by other systems closer to the viewpoint. It is in no way indicative of every single system in that area as that would be impossible to render.

You have to consider exactly how many systems there are in a 100ly cube at the core. Then consider how many explorers there are that are in that area and not just doing DW journey's. Of course you're gonna find that 90% of the systems you hit are undiscovered...

Here you go. Me looking at SagA, with only unvisited systems showing. This ONLY shows about 20-30Ly total distance (15Ly per direction).

Data is not inaccurate/broken, it literally is mostly undiscovered.
