The Price of Void Opals

About a month back I looked at EDDB for the best prices I could get for void opals. It was a lot. I was very happy, of course.

Last week (and this week) I noticed that the price of void opals is down quite a bit. Currently, highest payout listed is 799,532. I have to assume this is a cycle since other bases used to pay out over a million per ton. It's still a lot, of course, don't get me wrong - I can live with that amount per ton. It's just that it used to be the best thing to mine because nothing else could net you a million per ton before.

Just wondered if FD had "fixed" the cost payout since the last patch or if this is just market doing it's own thing.

Forget EDDB, its search Range for all types of Queries has been reduced to below-useful levels several months ago.
(in case of Commodities, it's down to 50LY - which can easily be insufficient to get a proper quote i.e. on best-sell locations for Void Opals)

Use one of these instead :

Here you go -

Just go to https://inara.cz/goods/10250/ and select "Best Sell".

Thanks for the replies. Bookmarked the "miner's tool" since that seems to go to the heart of what I'm looking for. Funny thing, though - it'll give you the best places to sell opals but if you click on the stations it names it brings you to EDDB (which gives the same prices in the market for void opals). Odd but it'll work. Thanks.

Yes, use this, it's what I use to pirate people.

Seems that high vo prices somehow related to player factions? Or is it just my imagination?

No idea, to be honest. The highest prices never line up with high demand, so I suspect these sell price hot-spots are manually shoved into the game by FDev. Maybe to generate traffic in otherwise quiet areas? Again, just my opinion, not based on any solid facts.

"I Want to Flood the Market with Thousands of Tons of the Same Material tens of thousands have flooded the market with already, why can't I get top credit for this?"

At least, that's what I'm hearing here.

All you're looking at for the 1.6-1.7M VO prices is :
  • any Faction that controls an Asset - although in most cases it's typically the controlling Faction
  • and which happens to have these 3 Faction States at the same time : Investment, Civil Liberty, Pirate Attack
  • (the rest is merely a minor factor of Economy type, Population Size and remaining demand in the affected markets)

And it sounds better if you make your voice sound more like Don Vito Corleone. Well, "Risk is part of the game if you want to sit in the big chair." (Admiral James T Kirk, Star Trek Generations).

Well if ED had a dynamic economy with actual supply and demand forces applied I'd say you were right, but AFAIK there isn't. The main thing that influences prices are faction states from the BGS. Pirate attack states (plus other factors) will result in a system paying top dollar for certain commodities like Void Opals and other core mining minerals whilst experiencing those states.

I'm fully expecting Ian Doncaster to tell me I'm wrong with a deep and technical explanation of the BGS and economy :)

I think we are well beyond telling ourselves the lie that a market is involved here. Enough tons of Painite have been mined to give it to the galaxy's kids as a paper-weight.

And enough Void Opals have been mined to use them as the galaxy's paper.

Doesn't make my interpretation any less amusing.

Don't search for systems near you. In eddb, go to commodities, void opals and scroll down. You will see most of the systems listing it for the normal 1.6m

Boom instead of Investment combined with Civil Liberty and Pirate Attack will yield a price above 1 mil. - like 1.4 instead of 1.6. Not bad for a non-MinMaxer. MinMaxing is an option. :geek:

Yup, I noticed that after my last posting. Also noticed that the best prices are experiencing "pirate attack" so getting to the station to sell them after experiencing about three pirate attacks was …. interesting.

Don't blame them.... They want that sweet opal goodness 😁. I do mining in an engineered Cutter and sometimes when I get interdicted by pirates I ram them for fun. Even killed a few for a good laughs 😂.
