Ships Loving My Krait Mk2

Following on from one of the mining threads in DD, took the advice and invested in one of these beasties.

I think I could come to love this boat - plenty of module space, albeit if I want to keep two cargo bays I can't carry a SRV (I preferred to fit a fuel scoop instead) and can fit with some teeth which allows me to stay out in the Pristines until all 128 units of space are full. Also 128 units gives some useful cargo capacity if I see a BBS mission that offers some decent material rewards.

Needs a bit of love from Farseer - I was able to swap in my G1 5A FSD from the AspX which with the heavy mining gear gives me around 22LY max - good enough for the Bubble but if I want to venture further out really want to be 30+. Once funds permit, also considering an Explorer build Krait 2, with D rated units and minus the mining kit (but with an SRV bay and AFMU or two) would be a nice ship to cruise up to Beagle Point in. I'm guessing a combat rated Krait Mk2 is also a strong possibility.

Better get blowing up some more 'roids, then...

I think I'm at about 27 laden with 5A long range 2. Are you doing laser mining? Some places you can save weight are power plant (5A is plenty for significant weight saving) and 6A power distribution give you max mining time with full pips at half the weight. 7A Still can't support 3 mining lasers without engineering (which I don't have yet).

Don't skimp on collectors - 4 is not enough, 5 might be just, 6 is okay even if you don't get the fragment stream perfect every time.

I tried the python first. I don't like it. Something about the ship shape make it feel like I can't get the fragment stream to behave as nicely.

Deep core mining. I've only fitted one collector though I may optimise the loadout and try to fit another. A shame they can't go on the Utility Mounts which are largely redundant other than a PDC or two.

For deep core I would be happy with 3-4 collectors personally, either one 5A or two 3A. Also the smallest refinery you can fit is fine, you don't need the extra space in it, and 2A refinery got more extra space than size 2 cargo rack. Bigger sizes the opposite is true. I like core mining, will try the Kraits with it again. I did the phantom before but didn't felt agile enough so went to Orca, but it's a bit bigger then I prefer. Chieftain or Orca both got the agility I like.

Yes the Krait MkII is a fantastic ship and my current setup is for combat at the running CG.
Done mining & trading in mine so far, however the Phantom is way better for exploration.

I've been tempted to get an MkII…. I keep hearing great things about that ship.

I own a Phantom and it's one of my Top 3 favorites. The Phantom is a solid miner (although I've recently outfitted a Python as my dedicated miner).

To me the Krait MkII feels better than the Python for mining, not sure why the Python is the most preferred. The python cockpit and shape feels worse as I stated earlier.

Krait II is great. It is a lot more fun to fly than the Python, gets a little bit more jump range, has a better cockpit, has better convergence on the hardpoints and gets a fighter bay (if you're looking to do combat), and only loses 64 tons of cargo and a little bit of shield and hull strength to do it.

Imo the loss of cargo space isn't a massive deal if you're making a miner or armed trader, and the aforementioned cockpit, jump range, and better handling more than make up for it. The decreased hull and shield strength are a really a non-issue unless outside of a few very specific edge cases.

The best part is that you can easily switch all of the modules back and forth between your Python and your Krait II (outside of one of the Python's size 6 optionals and the bulkheads for both ships) so you can decide which one you like better. You don't have to take my word that the Krait is the better ship, you can get your own, swap modules, and decide for yourself with very little hassle.

Yeah, the Krait MK2 is a favorite of mine, very versatile. And yes, it can make a very good PvE combat vessel, pirate hunting is the primary role for mine. The survivability isn't as good as a couple of my other ships, but the firepower lets you end an argument before that becomes a problem. :)

Don't forget the fighter hangar! I'd recommend a hangar with 2 Taipans: fixed plasma repeaters for one, and gimballed pulses for the other. The Taipans are very tough, but still maneuverable, and a good NPC pilot can do wonders with a fixed repeater Taipan. The gimballed pulses Taipan is for the somewhat less skilled me, who still likes to fly a fighter every now and again. These two Taipans carry chaff, which makes them quite viable even in tough combat scenarios.

Thats great, but, youve picked the wrong ship. It should the beluga
Ahahaha! Rick's fleet: Beluga after Beluga, all lined up in the hangar... :) "Which ship should I fly today?" Lol

I like a little variety though. Now if there were a medium baby Beluga, I'd probably never fly anything else, hehe

I would have to sacrifice one of the cargo racks or the fuel scoop to fit the fighter bay but something I may consider, if it avoids the need to make asteroid mining an "out and back" activity in the session. Either that or I need to "git gud" (again) probably over a year since I engaged in (virtual) mortal combat in ED and so rusty I couldn't remember where on the radar scope you need to position the blips to get them lined up. I did take down one of the attackers but by then the shields were gone so the other one (both NPC) ate me for breakfast!!

I love the Kraits, but I now have a miner/explorer conda and a mission runner/trader conda, and my poor Kraits just sit in the station! Where the miner/explorer conda really works well is when I'm out in a pristine ice ring and I decide to log out for the night, then I log back in the next day and there's pirates. That's when those 4 extra hard points really come in handy. Tho if I was a more peaceful man, my Phantom could easily out run them... I guess I'm just not a peaceful man!

I hear you, WK. My ultimate fleet ambition for this playthrough is something like two Anacondas (one trade, one long range exploration) and a decent fighter/corvette. The Krait is really a stepping stone in that direction so not even sure how far I would take the engineering on it.

Enjoy the Krait while you can, it's a great ship. Not as much room as a python, but it's more maneuverable and I just like its aethetics more than the python. Take it core mining, it will earn you loads of credits. Not sure if it has enough room for those 180 ton missions tho, I will have to check on Coriolis. It also makes a decent fighter, tho the FDL is superior as a pure fighter. And the KM2's little brother the Phantom is a great explorer, especially when it's got a Guardian FSD booster on board.

(FYI, I would use a corvette as my mission runner/trader, 'cos it has way more room inside and it's more maneuverable than the conda, but I don't have enough rep yet. But I'm getting there!)

Ouch, it pains me to even contemplate such a plan! I intend to have it all on this one account. :)

Making good progress, I have a full dozen solidly engineered fighting ships, and another half dozen in the works.

I finally found a build with a solid shield which can regen in 34 seconds. Another build which is an agile fighter but with 4K hull. I'm just too much of an engineering junkie NOT to try stuff out when I think of it... ;)
