Please Dont Laugh ( Too Much)

Ok been 6 weeks i think since i bought into Beta 1 testing and now i have finally managed to borrow my sons laptop long enough to play ED .

I have just spent 20 minutes and i finally managed to figure out how to configure the controls on an X Box 360 controller to how i like it and i have just completed the first tutorial :D

I have bits of paper all over the place trying to remember whet does what

LOL, don't feel bad. It takes a while to wrap the brain around.

Welcome to Elite. We all started the same as you fella. It takes time, I'm still a noob. You could invest in a joystick, I have the Logitech pro or something, 25 quid and it's sturdy, don't feel cheap. Better than the quickshot joystick I had back in 1982 lol.

Welcome! We all start somewhere, get ready for adventures unlimited :p!

I've been playing with the 360 pad since the first alpha, in December last year, and it's served me well. Michael Brookes said that the gamepad is about as good as a throttle and stick in practice, although the joystick setup of course feels more immersive. I got to try the X52 at E3, and it was definitely a lot of fun to use, but my current set up isn't joystick friendly.

Having your controls written down is actually quite sensible while learning. Borrowing your son's laptop however sounds terrible. You must either steal your son's laptop on a more permanent basis or get yourself a desktop.

Congrats on completing the first tutorial!

We've all been there, so don't worry :)

Actually, a lot of us didn't have the advantage of actually learning how to dock in a tutorial... We've had to do it with a real Sidewinder. You don't want to know how much money Pilot Federation spent on the replacement ships...

Hint: a lot more than they spent on the virtual tutorial missions machine! :D

I actually thought about writing down the controls, but then I came up with a layout for my 360 controller that I find extremely intuitive. I re-bound a couple hotkeys to the number pad for convenience and easy reach, but thats just landing gear, cargo scoop, etc. Things that I usually just wind up doing from the menu anyway

I wish I had the sense to write down my layout. I use a 360 Pad as well but each of the buttons is mapped to a different function from the default. I had to re-enter my settings at one point and it took me ages to get right.

I know it's possible to save the setting file, but what I did is just take a snapshot of the control options. The format of the setting file might change sometime in the future.

A structured approach is no laughing matter. Might learn a thing or two from that. For I had forgotten the concept!

Writing down your layout? Far too sensible :)

Much better to just get out there and just keep jabbing buttons until something happens, sure lots of bad things will happen at first but there really is nothing to lose when you're just starting out.

There realy is no substitue for learning about boost by accidentaly boosting inside a station. :D

It's a thing of beauty alright.

It's because of that I have written all the voice attack commands on card because the first time I almost completely forgot every single one. Is it "Supercruise"? ...Nope!

Is it "Warp"? .....Nope!

Is it "Hyperdrive"? ...Nope!

Is it "Rosemary the telephone operator"? ...could be!...

Don't feel bad at all. The fact that you've put time and effort into something that you enjoy and get a sense of accomplishment out of is enough in and of itself.

I have been adjusting and fine-tuning my controller setup since alpha, through 3 different flight sticks. I thought about the xbox controller, but just really wanted the flight stick precision.

I started out with an old crappy cheap stick that i bought to replace my old broken X-52 Pro. It wasn't really precise enough, so i went out and bought a better one specifically for this game, but that ended up being not enough buttons. Being a bit on the skint side, i stretched myself to get an X-52 (not Pro version this time) and am still using that. I have spent hours and hours getting my exact setup sorted out. I have turned off all the useless "clutch" modes, or whatever in the controller software and made every button a standard button, even the MFD buttons, and am using every single one of them.

I could even do with a couple more buttons really, but the 20 or so buttons, 6 axis, 2 wheels and a slider i have now are all pretty good. Once you get your controlls the way you like them and practice a bit until they become second nature, you'll be flying around between systems and space stations like you're just popping out to the shops.

My hard drive fell down this week - on beta 2 release day no less!. lost all binds etc. had to reset binds from muscle memory.

Welcome to elite, get voice attack. its very immersive and you dont have to worry about so many buttons!

It's a good point. I was a ham fisted idiot when I got my first ED Sidey. Now, I'm back to being a seasoned pro but it took a lot of setup tweaking. If I ever lose my .ini files, I'm sunk.

I'd also like to suggest using Voice Attack (it's a programme that converts spoken commands to key strokes - Google it) rather than trying to memorise all of the keys.

- I've built a very solid ED profile for things like rasigin and lowering landing gear, power management, entering super cruise etc and even have a macro that handles docking requests

Typically it starts like this....

Then you press the wrong button, and you end up like....

Elite is all about time! Spend time learning, then you spend time trading. Not going to laugh at anyone who can't land or fly very well, everyone has to start somewhere!
