Greetings!
I have been with the Elite franchise since it first came out in the mid 1980s. I played the original for so many hours I lost count, and the highest rank that I achieved was "dangerous." It has been lots of fun all the way and I have not been bored at all. Same with the Oolite remake-I have yet to achieve higher than "dangerous."
And now there is Elite Dangerous. I have been with this game since April 2019 and for me, the learning curve was indeed steep and the transtion from the original game to ED was long, but took my time to learn and to not rush things. I like this game so much that I play it virtually every day after real life duties are done. I already made Duchess with the Empire but am just a lieutenant with the Feds; I am allied with all 3 major powers; made Elite explorer and trader; have 8 ships (including 2 Annies and 1 Cutter) and am 26 percent Deadly.
However, I have just scratched the surface of what Elite Dangerous has to offer. I have yet to:
1. engage in power play (I might enter your service soon, Princess Duval-I would like those prismatics)
2. visit Beagle Point, Colonia, and Sagittarius A
3. mine Void Opals
4. fight Thargoids
5. engage in missions other than hauling cargo and data
6. circumnavigate the galaxy
7. get proficient with fixed weapons
8. reach Admiral with the Feds
9. try other ships other than the ones I have (I presently have a DBX, a Cobra Mk3, 2 Annies, 1 Cutter, 1 FDL, 1 iClipper, and of course the good old workhorse known as the Python)
10 unlock all Colonia engineers
11. explore the tough places (in terms of very low star density) like Xibalba, Tenebrae, and Kepler's Crest
12. find biological items while exploring
13. fully G5 enginner my entire fleet
14. visit the sights of the galaxy (like the various nebulae)
15. reach Queen wth the Imperials (ok, king).
and many other things I might have left out
The key to an open ended game like this is to not rush things. Do things as they come. If you focus solely on grinding and grinding and grinding, and rush instead of enjoying the game and taking things as they come, you will burn out.
In my opinion, obtaining the Cutter is totally worth it. With mine, I am presently making about 50 million an hour (I am not kidding) doing a trade loop in my home system. With the setup I have, the Cutter is virtually invincible in PvE. In HAZ-RES it terrorizes NPC Elite Condas, FDLs and Type 10s. The Imperial grinding is very easy: just go to Ngalinn and Mainali and stack data missions like crazy and watch your ranking skyrocket.
If you indeed feel bored and burned out, just take a break and come back later. There are many, many things to do in ED. The beauty of an open ended game like this is that we create our own story in which we decide how it ends (or keep going) and how long it takes. It is not like other games that have a definite story and an ending (i.e. WarpSpeed, Star Raiders, Super Mario Bros, etc).
Enjoy the game. It really is a wonderful one. Just keep it easy, take things as they come, and don't rush.
