A large group of bikers meet every Sunday in High beech Epping Forest Uk. The are there today disregarding any notice regarding large groups meetsin together or social distancing . There is also a cafe open. Also elederly poeple are out and about. So not much sympathy when its gets worse

Taxes, as always. The country can afford it, we've been paying the EU an inordinate amount of money for decades, and would have kept on doing so if not for Brexit. Time to look after our own for once!

We also made a lot of money from trade with our EU brethren. Its not 80% of everyone's wages anyway just the people with no work due to quarantine.

They're just begging for laws to be brought in, and that's exactly what will happen if people continue to act like children. Then they won't have a choice, unless they like being arrested and fined.

Why? It's common knowledge mate, when you're a member of the EU you have to pay into the EU budget. It's a percentage of your GDP, as with foreign aid.

Why do you think they were so annoyed at losing us? It's going to mean the remaining members have to pay more in to cover the shortfall, and Germany in particular does not want to do that.

As I wrote above, I do not want to make this political, am just interested in the subject .

Even though the portion of GDP UK paid into the EU at first glance made them 2nd biggest contributor, the story starts changing when you look at the impact of abatement . And there is more to consider :

Lets not go there, brexit is not a topic we can discuss without this topic getting locked. If people want to believe leaving the EU means they have piles of money laying around they can use 'for their own', that is their decision and discussing it won't help anyone.

Orite man . And here was me, naively thinking this could probably become a numbers discussion XD .

It's not about what we believe or don't believe, the fact remains that we had significant financial commitments to the EU, which likely involved us borrowing money to meet them. Regardless of which camp you're in, that's a fact.

My point was that if we could manage to do this for all these years, then paying people's wages is equally manageable. Someone else made it about Brexit, I was commenting on the financials.

If everyone knew how to survive independently of everyone else, and could be easily spooked into trying to survive in small self-sufficient groups, they'd quickly find out that the carrying capacity of this planet, without the various systems civilization has put in place, is about a tenth of the current population. There just isn't enough room or resources for billions of free-range humans. Consequently, people are way better off trying to keep their civilizations functioning than fussing over how to outlive them.

However, to me (and I suspect the level headed folk like Mole/Jason in this thread) its not about being able to survive independently for an indefinite period.

It's about being able to take care of yourself till those systems come back up, and its fair to express concerns about how few people are capable of doing that.

Couva hospital now under military control. Medical staff stuck inside with the infected. It's staffed by first year graduates on a 3 month contract. Some nurses reportedly refused to go to serve the infected, so the young doctors are doing all their work too.

Hope they make it out alive.

Our community spread has not yet been detected because of the usual lack of tests. People STILL think it is contained.

You are generally better of by living in a district or town with solid local emergency response.
Betting all on managing fully independent is romantic, but it’s extreemly vulnerable. If you get ill or wounded, you are basically lost.

It appears that getting ill or wounded is going to be a pretty dire thing no matter where you live due to over saturated hospitals.

Exactly. I kind of look at it like that kid Jack from the movie Titanic who knew how to keep his head and always be in the best position to react to the rapidly changing circumstances of the crisis. The people who look at what we're saying and acting like we don't recognize the importance of the various interconnected systems that coincide in cities are just being silly; despite being a dedicated country boy at heart, I've become a successful business man by engaging with these systems while making sure my lifestyle was kept at a remove, and when the virus recedes will be among the first to begin cleaning up the mess and re-igniting the economy. Assuming it's not "worst case scenario" time and like Jack on the Titanic I'll be ready to act accordingly.

We're just recognizing the increased dangers and difficulties for those who live piled in on top of one another in the concentrated urban areas, not being oblivious to why they're necessary.

But there are vast differences in numbers of beds per capita, to the point that given equal spread you might have 30-50x better odds of finding a bed in one county compared with another, and the logistics of actually getting to one such bed also can differ quite a bit.
