April the first.

“The virus that we’re talking about having to do, a lot of people think that goes away in April, with the heat, as the heat comes in, typically that will go away in April”.
.... a noted epidemiologist, and stable genius. 🤡🎃

Caseload reported:
211,143
Deaths reported:
4700 rounded down.

At least Morbad recognizes that the worst of the global impact is going to felt economically, so that's a start.

That depends on what you mean. A total economic collapse? Sure. A deep recession in non-first world countries? Sure. But as long as a country is able to retain a baseline-level of functioning, a recession is easily preferable than massive deaths. The 'death of despair' you see rising during an economic recession are not because people can't handle an x% drop in the dow, but because they can't afford food for their family, can't afford their rent, can't afford medical care, can't afford education for their children. But a country can provide all those things, even in a recession. If a recession hits Belgium I will not lose the place I live, I won't lose access to health care, I won't starve. Barring a complete collapse these are a given. Will I have to scale down on luxuries? Well, yeah. Can I wake-up and make a snap-decision to have lunch in Portugal if I so desired? Maybe not for quite a while (personally I wont mourn the end of ultra-cheap flights but still, the point remains). But I can't worry nearly as much about that than losing loved ones.

So the objective remains simple (though not easy!):
1) Keep as many people alive as possible.
2) 'freeze' as many jobs as possible.
3) Maintain a social baseline.

Countries unable to do these things (eg. India, many latin-American countries, most if not all African countries) will see massive rise in indirect fallout.

But you would be very welcome here in our small but sunny country. And our food is great!

Honestly, I've always enjoyed my stays in Portugal. Great people, great food, great weather. Rather partial to fado as well, to be honest. :) Not a lot of live acoustic music over here... :/

We're getting messages from the authorities here that everyone (unless for specific reason) should have an influenza vaccine shot this year moving into our winter (it's autumn here but still 30+ degrees C in these sub-tropics).

I haven't had a flu vaccine in living (sorry about the pun!) memory but now, because of family, I am giving it serious consideration.

There might be secondary benefit to getting vaccinated with pretty much anything.

I'm thinking to redo my tetanus shot for similar reasons.

Live vaccines, such the BCG, measles and oral polio vaccines, are thought to have non-specific beneficial effects on some infections. Therefore it is possible that BCG could reduce the intensity of SARS-CoV-2 infection by stimulating the memory of innate immunity, the first line of immunity in the face of infection, and thereby inducing “trained innate immunity”.

Yeah; sorry Doc I did realise that post was actually to some extent misstated.

I do realise that the flu vaccination has no effect on COVID-19 transmission/contagion.

The thinking is, as you say, developing a concomitant viral infection, flu or other infection is a bad thing.

I should have been more clear.

I suppose I should check how up to date all my travel vaccinations are..............

Sure.
(If you know a paediatrician, it wouldn't hurt to do over a DPT booster, if everything is up to date.)

Preventing influenza itself is also intrinsically useful, as a completely separate matter. Australia is working through the BCG study too, so your top guys know the theory well.

They might be cleverly doing a two birds with one stone plan. (y)

The thing to note about the numbers is they are bad and they have resulted from most countries doing lockdowns. Imagine if they'd just blithely ignored it. The virus has just entered Africa, it's not over by a long shot.

I'm getting the full court press to get vaccinated this year too. 😛

Easy times at the moment, according to the local papers. They are quoting our Chief Med Officer of Health (CMOH) who basically runs Public Health.

Of the 75 patients there, 59 do not need any substantial medical attention, he said.

He said options are being explored to move the 59 out of the Couva hospital to a more appropriate setting, which would also free up space at the facility for more critical patients. “We are trying to get the persons that are well, the symptom-free persons that are recovering, out of Couva. Had it not been that they were contagious, in a normal hospital setting they would have been discharged.”

All our hotels are empty, so most likely they are going to get placed at a more luxurious locale. Venetian blinds, palms, wall Batik, ceiling fans and Daiquiris?

I have some family that runs a beach house complex, on the East Coast, where the wind whips clean and fresh from the sea, and they cook the snapper with Moruga Scorpion pepper. That'll kill any virus.

I could use a weekend there myself.

What are you on about? Plenty of cancer-inducing products are banned for that very reason...🤨
Not world wide, in some countries yes, my point if you didn’t got it the first time,

the measures done right now is to save the health care system so that it can deal with the patients coming in. The rate people get infected and need treatment is the danger for the system not if they die. Cancer patients live for a very long time before they die, so it’s turned into a big business.

as soon as they got the rate people get infected under control, the countries will open up again, the cost will most likely be more death, but controlled death and then we go back to “normal” however the virus will still be here infecting people.

How do I move there? :)

That BCG hurt as hell, for a few weeks. It better be good for something.
