And in other news Belgium appears to have successfully flattened the curve, with hospitalizations per day being pretty much static for the last few days. ICU is a little over half capacity, so it seems an overload will be prevented.

Excellent!

Good news. We have been flat for a while now in Norway. About 250 new cases a day, about 300 in hospital and about 100 in ventilator.

The question is, what now? We will be doing this for a year, if we keep steady pace.
Some suggest opening up a bit, to help the economy. Opening kindergardens and schools (9 years and younger) i the hottest debate.
Some suggests to tighten even further, in order to suppress the virus. R is currently estimated at 0.97 (with significant margin for error). To suppress effectively, we need to drop at least to 0.9. Even then it will take months.
We could even just be pushing the wave back in time. A huge setback may come at a later time. There really are no answers at the moment.

It is really difficult huh ? Would be helpfull to know how representative the numbers in Norway are ( %age of pop tested ) .

In the absence of sufficiently tested and reliable, mostly failsafe AntiBody tests, easing up on containment measures is really, really risky . There are too many unknowns still . Steady r0<1 for about 2 weeks seems to be what german course is at the moment .

The solution for the future seems simple enough: whoemever tests positive for antibodies us free to go outside, whatever you touch first is yours to keep.

We have done about 100,000 tests, with about 5,000 positives. The tested are a combination of travelers from risk spots, key health workers, people with symptoms and people that have been in contact with positives.
There is no detailed break down of the data available.

Do you know whether tracing etc. is being done ?

More stats from the Netherlands. In week13 casualties already exceeded the flu-spike of 18/19 (which was the severest recent spike). Despite all measures taken, total casualties will vastly exceed flu casualties by orders of magnitude.

Not that this should surprise anyone, but it's good to have the info all the same.

The real hilarity of that vid is the way he's stood is bracing downwind, not upwind. :D

It's a shame when you compare it with how the TV news was presented in the US decades ago: sober, factual, no screaming panels of opinionated dingleberries. I guess what you see now is the free market delivering what the people want: sensationalist "exciting" garbage.

The statistical evidence for general mask wearing by the public is shown here:

The Medcram doctor says his hospital protocol is an N95 below a surgical mask.
The public need is different, merely an obstruction for droplets.

I'm using a homemade black mask over a surgical one in low risk settings.

There was plenty of garbage news decades ago, just less of the hypersensationalized, deliberately polarizaed, for profit content...well, unless you count war time propaganda, which has always been utterly ridiculous.

Personally, I'm far less concerned with the dubious veracity of mainstream media than I am with being surrounded by a populace that doesn't even know what science is and probably couldn't tell fact from fiat if their lives depended on it (especially when it actually does).

I wish you'd not call it the free market though. Something like five or six companies control essentially all mainstream media in the US and are further polarized into two camps who often go as far as sharing scripts. You can see the same news stories, almost word for word, across hundreds of different stations, and two or three different networks, every day. This level of consolidation isn't the product of anything that should be mistaken for a free market.

On the issue of the US going "interesting ways" of intercepting/outbidding other nations' supplies :

(Google Translated)
In the Corona crisis, Berlin has to do without the urgently needed delivery of 200,000 medical protective masks. Reason: The United States confiscated the goods in Bangkok, as Berlin's Senator for the Interior Andreas Geisel (SPD) announced on Friday. The FFP-2 masks, which can protect against infection with the corona virus, were, according to him, intended for the police of the capital. Berlin ordered and paid for them from a US company. According to research by the “Tagesspiegel”, they were made in China, official information was not available.

Geisel criticized the United States' actions sharply. "We consider this an act of modern piracy," he said. “This is not how you deal with transatlantic partners. Even in times of global crisis, there should be no wild west methods. ”The federal government must urge the United States to comply with international rules.

Apparently France and Canada have experienced similar problems and are now lacking urgent supplies that were already ready for shipment.
