Ships How do you name your ships?

Most of my ships are named after rock types or mining prospects I have worked on.

Vulture - Pyroclastic (= hot pebbles = frag boat)
Mamba - Rhyolite (black paint job)
Orca - Electrum (gold/black paint)
Keelback - Eladium (Peruvian prospect)
Viper IV - Saulito (Peruvian prospect)
Anaconda - Oxide (orange paint, for surface mining)
AspX - Metallurgist (general miner)

And other names I just like: Type-9 (The Bloody Nine), combat Krait II (The Bolsh), fast iEagle (Ozone), Phantom (Fire Bird), expl Krait II (Intrepid)

I've recently bought an Orca which I've decided will be for the express purpose of rescuing refugees from burning stations. I've called it Hope's Light because in my mind, my ship is a beacon of hope for these poor people fleeing from the Thargoid threat.

Obvious bug theme started by my free sidewinder Ladybug.

Current Ships:
Asp - Cicada
Orca - Mothra
Python - Scarab
Python - Roach
Cutter - Beetlejuice
Python - Cricket

Both my ships and commander are generally named after the Lord of the Rings universe, I try to find a suitable name for the ships based on their intended role (some names I spelled differently because of how they were transcribed to my native tongue):
CMDR Orodruin - after Mount Doom's Sindarin name
Asp Explorer (Exploration): Radagast - After Radagast the brown, a wizard that did not partake in the war of the ring
Python (Core miner): Durin's bane - The Balrog of Moria, the dwarves dug too deep and too greedily.
Python (laser miner): Angband - The ancient subterranean fortress of Melkor.
FDL (bounty hunter): Ungoliant - The first giant spider of Arda. Distant mother of Shelob.
Krait mk II (thargoid scout killer): The Witch King - After the Witch-King of Angmar, leader of the Nazgûl, first among ring-wraiths.
Anaconda (long range hauler/engineering mule): Bill the Pony - After the pony travelling with the hobbits until the gates of Moria. Trusty carrier of things.
Python (passenger liner): Bombadill - After Tom Bombadil.
Imperial Eagle (speed racer): Shadowfax - After the lord of horses, running faster than the wind.
Type 7 (search and rescue): Gwaihir the Windlord - After the lord of the great Eagles carrying Frodo away from Mount Doom.
Corvette (not yet role-cast): Orthank - After the tower of Isengard.
Sidewinder (memorabilia): Samwise Gamgee - Old and trusted friend that has always been with me.

I also have some other ships that do not follow this naming convention ... For example, my large laser miners (T9 and Cutter) are called Pay Night and Pay Night 2 for homonymic reasons ...

Mine are named after species of dogs, with one being named after a specific dog. I try to keep the species relevant to the ship's roll.

Small:
CNR Barbet - Dolphin
CNR Bassett - DBx
CNR Bullenbeisser - Vulture
CNR Saluki - Imperial Courier

Medium:
CNR Malamute - Python
CNR Malinois - Krait MKII
CNR Keeshond - Krait Phantom
CNR Baskerville - Alliance Chieftain

Large:
CNR Dachshund - Anaconda
CNR Leonberger - Imperial Cutter
CNR Kuvasz - Type-10 Defender
CNR Tosa Inu - Type-10 Defender

I'm another with more than one account. Some ship names have themes, e.g. Adders have French names, FDS have sorrowful names and so on. Others are random.

Favourites include:

The whichness of why (Cobra IV),
East bound and down (Krait),
Lokabrenna (FGS),
Mustang Sally (Phantom),
Drunken lullabies (Asp),
This.is.Sandpit.Turtle (Asp Scout)
Unexpected Outcome (Hauler)
In walks Barbarella (T7)*
Weaponised Funk (Viper IV)*
Behold the Colossus (T9)*

*I like Clutch ;)

Mine are random.

Sidewinder - Worm - small like a little worm.
Cobra MkIII - Noodle - my internet nickname.
Dolphin - Orion Uber - it's an Uber taxi inside the Bubble.
Diamondback Explorer - Lonely Ranger - named after the character Lone Ranger, for exploration.
Vulture - Mossberg 500 - it's like a short-range shotgun in combat.
Asp Explorer - Dora - everybody knows Dora the Explorer.
Chieftain - Comanche - I think it's the name of a famous Red Indian chief.
Python - Pajero Sport - named after my 4x4 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (also known as Montero Sport in US).
Python - Gold Digger - obviously for mining.
Krait MkII - Kraken - like that ancient mystical monster.

Well strictly speaking Comanche is the name of the tribe. Lots of good chiefs names. Buffalo Hump, Iron Jacket, Amorous Man and Old Owl!

I originally tried to name my ships along three theme lines:

Alliance ships - Roman Gods (Jupiter, Neptune, Apollo etc)
Federation ships - Greek Gods (Aphrodite, Ares, Demeter etc)
Independent ships - Norse gods (Odin, Thor, Loki, etc)

but eventually started to struggle when some of the latter ships were released and then moved across to a unifying naming convention following the 'Gone in 60 Seconds' approach to naming. (Mary, Barbara, Lindsey etc. )
Hence my current ship is called 'Jessica'

When I first started playing Elite, I was naming my ships after historical warships. Like Takao, Wanderer, Undaunted. I tried to use destroyer names for small ships, cruisers for mediums and battleships for large.

Most of those ships are sold now, only remaining one is Takao, a Python.

Since then I just choose names I like and that sound cool to me and fit the ship. I have ten ships currently

Sunburst Orca, ode to the finishes on my Les Pauls and Strats

Takao Python, Japanese cruiser of WW2

Eagle Weslake Fer-de-Lance, Dan Gurney's 1967 Formula One car, the finest of all time

Poison Whiskey Krait II, Lynyrd Skynyrd song

Twin Reverb Krait II, classic Fender guitar amplifier

Dawnbreaker AspX, sword in Skyrim, named by my then 8 year old son

Arclight Vulture, dunno where I got the name from

Mad Hops DBX, self-explanatory

Velocity iCourier, ditto

Smokeless iEagle, it's my GTA Online handle haha

I name mine after SCi-FI Grand Master authors:

Anaconda - A.E. Van Vogt

Asp Explorer - Robert Heinlein

Cobra Mk lll - Author C. Clarke

DBE - Frederick Pohl

Krait Phantom - Isaac Asimov

Python - Clifford Simak

Krait mk2 - Perseus
Anaconda - Daedalus
Fed Corvette - Helios
Sideywindey - Argo

So a vague greek theme. I know, pretty unoriginal :<
Also, a vulture named Shrike, because it sounds mean.
I'll admit to never naming my Hauler and Asp Exploder, mainly because I used them as pure utility ships, not really adventure machines like the rest.

Usually I would spend some time flying new ship and when I figured it's character name comes to me on it's own. Sometimes it just too obvious from the get go. Like my "Purple Haze" for example. 😁

Early and mid-80's video games, especially if they were available on Commodore 64 and British. For example, I have found myself (hopefully temporarily) with 3 mining ships and I'm still pondering the name for the new one. Old ones are Boulder Dash and Manic Miner. Dig Dug is an obvious one. I also got a full set of Federal piggies, which I named after Jeff Minter games.
