News Community Update (01/05)

Personally, I'd prefer a release after Christmas and New Years. November and December are very busy months in our family with birthdays and such, so I'm totally okay with this delayed release.

Ahhhhh, make games using computers!?!? That type of work can be done from home with the right support (equipment), right access to servers, but I must admit it would be limited by the internet and company security policies. With just a little enginuity, much can be achieved working from home...
When it comes to just taking care of your own little bit of code or design, yes, personally I preferred to do it at home or at some secluded location without anyone disturbing. However, to create a cohesive product, you need to discuss designs. Graphical design the most, but even code design sometimes need a collective look at. There are tools to interact over Internet, but meeting in person is a lot more efficient. That's my experience at least. A whiteboard and everyone seated around a table, and someone leading the brainstorming, just doesn't feel right on a computer screen.

Is that your crystal balls?

I pay attention to more than just what's posted on forums, I pay attention to financial reports, stock and holdings, I look at performance over time..
I'm not just a player of video games. That's okay though. The business side of it isn't really your concern, neither it is of mine.. but of those that have pumped a lot of money into the company. I'm not worried about their finances so much as I'm worried about the money being wasted. It's opinion and it's not hard to see where the money is going.

Uneducated people mock what they don't understand, and I've been around long enough to know this is a fact, not opinion.

Looking at Frontiers history of delays to Elite its hardly a great intellectual stretch to come up with a prediction that the new era would similarly be delayed.

Still bully for you and your educated self.

I'm a bully? News to me, I was making an observation and an educated analysis, and then an opinionated response...
but yeah, I was "bullying"... , because I'm clearly a "black knight" with my toxic behavior and insults.
I'm done listening to you white knights, that's clearly all you are here to do.

2 ignored, more to follow I'm sure, but I said what I had to say, I'm done now. Have a good day.
Frontier, take care, best of luck, health, safety, all of that to you.

Sizing software is notoriously difficult to get right. To be honest, I would have been incredibly surprised if new era had not been delayed, especially since Frontier have undoubtedly lost some time in the transition to a remote working company. You can size software repeatedly and accurately if you're using something like SEI CMM level 5 process, but that's so expensive it's only done if you're writing avionics or medical (or other safety critical) software - it's way too expensive for game development.

He never said you were a bully for crying out loud. Just your total misunderstanding of the English language. The phrase 'bully for you' actually means 'used to express admiration or approval'. Don't make yourself look foolish by claiming things that are clearly the opposite of your interpretation

"Bully for you" is just a saying, it essentially means "good on you"

I guess you could say China is entirely responsible for this delay... (as the origin of Covid-19)

But if you are insinuating that a less than 8% shareholder is responsible... Wow! Just Wow, amazing conspiracy theory

Maybe you should see your GP about that cough, and maybe some self-isolation too :)

Heh, I didn't know about the 8% shareholder thing. Nice find.

Greetings Commanders,

Today, we wanted to share an update with you all regarding the on-going development of Elite Dangerous.

Despite transitioning as a company to work from home during these challenging times, we're still committed to providing the best possible support, development and updates for the game and for our community. We've launched the first Fleet Carriers beta and are now busy working on the second installment coming in May. This second beta will be opening its hangars not only to PC Commanders, but also those on console for the first time! Everything is still on track to bring Fleet Carriers to the live servers in June.

However, during this uncertain period, we've also had to re-examine our longer term roadmap and make some adjustments. To ensure that we can bring you an incredible new Elite Dangerous experience without compromising the team who work at Frontier, the Next Era release date will move slightly from December 2020 to early 2021.

We haven't made this shift lightly, but it has been made with both the team and the game's best interest at heart. We know that many of you are eager to hear more about the Next Era of Elite Dangerous and, despite this shift in release date, our schedule to bring you news and details about the future hasn't changed, so keep an eye on all of our channels for more information in the coming months!

Thank you everyone for your patience, understanding and generally being an awesome and passionate community!

Stay safe and keep supporting each other,

o7

Hi Will, hope you are all OK.

I am a software developer, working from home during these events and I can tell you that it's not that easy.

Sure, if you're working on something that requires little to no collaboration, I can see how you might be as productive as being sat at your desk. Tell that to me though, who has two young children that aren't at school at the moment, one of which is severely autistic and needs 24/7 care. Tell that to me, who's wife is a front-line nurse helping to fight this thing - who comes home exhausted every day.

In between all the working from home I'm supposed to be doing, I'm home schooling the kids, keeping them safe and happy - cooking meals for all of us and keeping everything running at home and trying not to stress over the fact that I have a really inconveniently timed broken pipe, that's ruining the plaster in my hall and living room.

I can 100% assure you, that I am nowhere near as productive at home than I am at work.

But that's just me, and everyone has their own experience.

I want to thank Frontier for providing me with an awesome way to escape all that for a few hours before I go to bed; just wandering around out there on the rim of the galaxy, or parking my ship on an undiscovered moon somewhere while I watch an alien sun rise.

I suppose we were due another one.

So.... do you know when you can tell us what, exactly, has been delayed? :)

Or even.. when you can tell us when you can tell us what it is?
