Newcomer / Intro Couple newbie questions

Are you sure about the ship? That would have been the first NPC I've seen (or heard of) in a Cobra Mk.IV - that one was/is a special bonus for early buyers of Horizons IIRC. A Viper Mk.IV on the other hand would have no big trouble in catching up with a DBX.
It’s a big galaxy and we all experience it differently, I quite regularly encounter NPCs in Cobra MkIVs in RESs occasionally they are flown by clean pilots but my conditioned reflex on seeing one is pirate.

Not anymore, unfortunately, I don't know how to check... Are there any records of the fights? I only remember that ship with funny name, that sounds like a McDonnald ice cream... :)

One more, gentlemen... (Why I assume there are no ladies here? I'm sorry if there are, didn't mean to be exclusive)... I just accepted a Tactical Data Acquisition mission. I had to fly to a system, where I was told to travel to Buckell Observatory in Ditia System. It says "target settlement: Buckell Observatory, planetary landing module". There is no such thing in Ditia system... I'm lost... Also, I don't have the DLC to be able to land on planet, i guess? (I'm sure I dont have Horizons, but maybe I can land?)

1) There are ladies, here
2) Ditia is a real system, according to eddb.io but if you don't have Horizons, you will indeed not be able to land on a planet. The confusing thing, though, I think if you don't have Horizons, you should have been offered the mission in the first place. Weird. Maybe it's a space installation rather than a planetary base. You'll have to check.

If you play on PC, the records are there. You can check them yourself, like Chris said, or you can install something like EDDiscovery to display these records in a (somewhat, it's still a table with too many entries - but there are filter functions) more readable form.

If you were killed in that fight, you can also check in-game. Go to your comms panel (top left), then to the history tab (the one with the clock symbol). That shows all the CMDRs (human players) you encountered. If one of them killed you, it will say so in big red letters: Killed You.

As @aRJay says, you do see NPC quattros - not just in RESs but elsewhere too. Some of the powerpants roving-hunters use them too. When I am flying one of mine I flash my headlamps at them (I used to drive a Reliant Scimitar) - they never flash back though, ignorant swine.

Yeah I don’t know why you insist on only asking gentlemen either... there are female Players... case in point.

Well I guess I just assumed based on my wife frowning at anything that even remotely resembles a computer game or anything... She actually created this stereotype in my mind, that games are only for immature old guys like me... Sorry if I caused any hard feelings... :)

I think you are talking about the "fer-de-lance". one of the best combat ships in the game.
Yes, that's the one... I didn't know it is one of the best... But since it put up a real fight against those police officers and my gimbaled lasers were hardly able to hit it, I guess you are right, it must be... Well, she's dead anyway... :)

Also, don't know if you know, but if you have gimballed weapons and the enemy is using chaff, you can de-target them. That will stop weapons from gimbaling and you can use them as fixed weapons (provided you have that level of ship control already, of course) in either case, hitting them occasionally is still better than not hitting them at all.
That advice is often given Chris, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's OK for one for one-on-one battles and also if you're relatively skilled and used to using fixed weapons, but when the police are involved there's a good chance that you might accidentally shoot them. With the police are helping you, all you have to do is wait until the chaff stops before firing. That gives you a chance to charge your weapons capacitor and/or put 4 pips to engines and get in a better position to shoot after the chaff has gone.

Where have you been? They're one of the pirates' favourite ships. You'll regularly see them in a high RES along with the Viper mk4. Like the Viper mk 4, they're always pretty slow, so they make good ships to practice keep shooting from behind. Both those ships take more shots to kill than the other versions, but they're a lot easier to kill because they can't shoot you so much - assuming you stay behind them.

With one account up to Semotus Beacon - haven't seen another ship for three years there :)
With the other, part time in Colonia, trying to mess with and escaping the loving attention of The Nameless crowd, now back in the Bubble, doing PowerPlay undermining (done now - those were usually T-6, Keelbacks, Eagles, Vipers - both kinds, with the occasional T-9, iCourier or iClipper thrown in) and general missions, currently scouting nearby systems for a Buckyball idea that's bugging me. But yes, haven't seen the inside of a RES for quite some time now. With the ship I'm currently flying, any random interdiction usually ends before I have the time to check whether that small triangle was a Sidey or a Cobra. And the mission targets usually fly larger ships.

Ok, I'll keep in mind that pirates are flying also Quattros now. Won't stop me blowing them up, though :devilish:.

I think it is deliberate by FD to troll PS4 players and johnny-come-lately others. ;)

I like to get in real close when they are chaffing and watch as my gimbal beams make pretty patterns as they dance over their hull. 🕹

Actually, it's not easy to spot Cobra mk4s because they're fairly similar to a mk3. It's their slowness to turn that normally gives them away.

As you have learned, @CMDR SleepyDelegate, there's a benefit to combat in high security and medium security systems. In a high-security system, help will show up almost instantly in the majority of cases. If you can hold your own for a while, combat in medium-security systems will also include help from local security forces- after a longer delay.

Others have hinted at this too: in the tangle of these episodes, it's almost inevitable that you'll inadvertently land a shot on one of the security forces' ships, resulting in a paltry fine and a bounty on you. The fine is almost silly (100cr or 200cr), but the bounty can be problematic. If you go to a station in-system, you'll very likely* be carted off to a prison colony somewhere far away. Instead, I suggest that you take a little detour. Jump to another system (close by) to "get out of dodge" and then take a moment to find the nearest "interstellar factor" where you can pay the fine and wipe the bounty. Use Inara, Eddb, etc. to find this facility.

The first couple of times that this happened to me, I had to get back where I was so I used the return trip get some exploration data that earned me some credits. Make the best of it...

I hope this is helpful. Have fun!

* faction considerations apply here, but the likelihood is high.

As a "goody-two-shoes" I have not much experience with the C&P these days but I thought you only got sent to detention facility if you click "hand yourself in" (or words to that effect).

If you go to ta station as a criminal and don't use stealth tactics, the police will scan you, then either they blow you up or you don't realise docking permission has been revoked and get blown up by the station when you go inside. That's what sends you to the penitentiary rather than handing yourself in.
