PS5 revealed

The thing is going to be MASSIVE! Which makes sense as it is more powerful than the current gen consoles, but it would be a bit too big from my Ikea gaming shelf 😂, I think I also need to purchase a new TV, the plasma tv I have has done its job but now it is time to make the upgrade to make the most of next gen.
This is going to be an instant purchase for me if backwards compatibility is going to support the games I have (please please please please please have JWE updated 🙏). I plan to wait and play games like God of War and Spiderman next gen to make use of the faster loading times. This will be a huge jump as I have the base PS4 console and would appreciate the better performance and a quieter fan.

Plus the funky design is speaking to me, it is so sleek and outlandish that I love it!
I think the next gen consoles will be the first real reason (of all the reasons, not just gaming ones) to start thinking about 4K TV

Exactly! I recalled how the PS4 pro and XboxOne were 4K compatible, but I kept hearing how the difference between the systems were not that significant, plus 4K tvs were super expensive. Now that things are actually improved in terms of gameplay, graphics, AND performance, I am in the search for a 4K tv to call my own.

Currently looking for an OLED or QLED model to make the most of the new experience. I also saw how there are 4K HDR and 4K Ultra HD and just got confused and was wondering if there is a notable difference between the two. Once I find the one, I plan to stick to it for several years like how I did with the plasma TV. I want the PS5 release date will be glorious! 🔥

I think if I were to shop for a new TV, I'd approach it as when I was buying a monitor.
Rather than getting swamped by numbers, features and tech mumbo, I want to SEE what the picture looks like.

So personally, I'd just take a flash drive with a gameplay clip or a trailer or a 4K film down to some store you trust and ask them if you could try a couple of different TVs. If you want HDR, focus on the black. It has to be black, not grey - i.e. the screen has to have local dimming. If you don't need HDR (personally I think it's a gimmick. Nice, but unnecessary one.) just look at five, six TVs and simply pick the one you like the most. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, I plan to do that soon once sales happen near my place. It was odd that when looking at 65inch OLEDs from LG, they have the HDR be the cheaper version when compared to the Ultra HD, so I thought it would be the superior version to get. I recall how Oled is a superb way for a screen as it actually have the dark areas be dark as the TV lacks a backlight found in plasma and LCD.

On a side note, I will also be excited to get rid of the old plasma tv. I love to play retro games on my psone, n64, and gamecube and like to use the 4:3 aspect ratio. It is just unfortunate that the TV I have now FOR SOME REASON use grey borders when projecting the TV in 4:3 😂😭 . I managed to update the old consoles and have them be HDMI compatible, so I am looking forward to checking out the new oled tvs and ask "how does it look in 4:3"? 🤣

Be aware that most TVs are preset with "showroom" settings, that are designed to stand out from other TV sets, meaning that contrast and saturation typically are cranked to the max. Which would be very tiring for prolonged viewing.
I know a lot of people don't care too much about such things, but in general I agree, blacks and skin tones and lack of edge "artifacts" are things to look out for.

As an aside; I'm wishing for a CD-app for the PS5. I'm a hi-fi nut, and have a large CD collection, much of which can't be streamed lossless. I was sad to see that the PS4 left it out, but I would be happy to pay for a separate app seeing as the optical drive is still there. I know it's old tech, but I also know other boomers who would happily pay to keep their lossless CD collections alive on a PS5.

Going off topic, but why can't you rip your CDs to a lossless format & stream those?

I could and I do. But using the PS5 as a main hub for home entertainment would just be so much easier. Today I have an external disc drive connected to my PC. But being able to access, store and manage my CDs on the PS5 would just be so much easier. I still use a PS3 sometimes because of the brilliant Earth GUI. :)

I miss that GUI. I used it a lot in my PS3 days and it was so fast and seamless. Especially if you categorized your games based on platforms (PS3, PS2, PS1). I wish to see such a thing come back or be improved on in the PS5. We did see the opening but I wish to have a faster sense of control then what the PS4 had.

PS4 leaving out CD support meant I skipped that generation all together. I would love to jump back on the PS5 boat. :) But unless the playstation returns to its origins of being a "true" media hub, I'll stick to my HTPC.

Fair enough. I'm only asking because I use lossless rips from my CDs, and access them via Plex.

Same with Blurays and DVDs incidentally.

I'm sure there will be a Plex app for the PS5.

Sounds interesting. I have no idea what Plex is. Will be looking in to that shortly. Thanks. :)

This does actually bring a question I had in mind.

So the PS5 does have super fast loading times thanks to the SSD, however, if it comes to physical media, would that loading speed be hindered due to reading the data from a disc?

I have games like God of war I wanna try, but I got the physical disc due to my PS4 storage being limited, and that the disc was rather affordable. It takes 20 seconds to read 1GB on a PS4, and 0.27 seconds to ready 2GB on the PS5. This is still fast to load, but would it be that big of a difference if it is read from physical media?

I assume that loading from disc will indeed take a little longer than loading from the internal SSD. I don't think it's anything to worry about though. :)

Loading from a CD will always be significantly slower than from an SSD (even a normal SSD, never mind the superfast custom jobbie that Sony have planned for us). So it depends on how the game itself is written.

Usually you have an option to install it, and then it only checks the disk for a valid license when you first load up the game. But aye, it takes time to spin up the disk, read it, and then send that info back to the operating system / game.

I found it annoying personally, and actually pawned off my hard copy PS4 games so I could buy them digitally.

This makes a lot of sense tbh.

I was also debating a while back to getting the discless version of the PS5 because of this. I got a switch recently and loved the convenience of having my games on the system itself. I was thinking of getting a PS5 to be discless to enjoy the experience as well, but I thought of still making that purchase with the disc so that I have the PS5 as the new blu-ray player and if there is the off chance of the PS5 to read older playstation games like PS3 and PS2, which it very well won't, but I am hopelessly hopeful in these things :)

And I guess over time, I could make the upgrade to the PS5 to have it have more storage than what I got initially. And probably then, I would likely repurchase some of my favorite games on PSN occasionally if it ever comes at a significant discount.

A part of me does hope that the PSN would have a method in which it could read the PS discs that you have and would offer the player a significant discount to have that game be digitally purchased. It may be a single use thing per disc so that every time a recognizable disc that has been unclaimed, you could opt for the digital version to make the most of these games. Then again, this could also be abused if players could just get a used copy of the game and download the digital version in a cheaper cost than normal. I doubt this could happen.

I think the "Digital Edition" is the one Sony are going to be pushing the hardest IMO.

You can kinda see that in the design - the 4K bluray drive they added on the other model is off-centre, and looks a bit like it was bolted on as an afterthought. I guess it's useful if you don't already have a bluray player though.

I came to the PS ecosystem from Steam (only bought the console to play RDR2, which came on a disc) and I discovered you could pick up lots of games for it for a song at 2nd hand shops. I soon discovered why they were so cheap though... it made me realise how irritating disc swapping was/is. They've all been pawned back (including RDR2) and re-bought the best ones as a download.

For me, digital is the way forward... with the biggest storage device they can fit in it. 2TB minimum, 4TB+ preferable.

I just hope the pad is bigger, I heard the PS4 pad was bigger (all previous gen PS pads cramp my hands too much, Xb pads MUCH better) but never had a PS4.

Yes, I agree on the digital look. It looks super sleek and symmetrical, and would probably be cheaper, run a bit cooler and take in less power .
AAAAAAAARRRGGGGHHHH
Sorry, I am a bit perplexed on the situation myself. I do not aim to sell my PS4, so I may hold onto the games I got and play on my ps4, and only go digital on the PS5 due to how optimised the system is for digital games.

I guess it depends on the price and options.

If the PS5 digital edition is notably cheaper than the PS5 with the disc, I would be tempted. If there will be a digital edition that has more internal storage, I might go for that.
I also want to see how the games will be stored in the system. I recall a point in the developers live stream that the PS5's ssd may have an optimised sense of storage and would compress games further. So a purchase of the digital deluxe version of GOW could be as cheap as $14, and would take 45GB of storage. If the PS5 architecture could compress that file size further, it would definitely tempt me to get the digital version.

But you know what? I will go digital. I still have my PS4 and PS3 to play bluray movies from, and I would rather deal with a bad SSD that could be replaced instead of a broken motor that reads the discs later down the line. My psone had a failing disc drive and I made the most of it by having the board be modified to read from SD cards, and I never looked back since. So the digital PS5 will be my baby. My large mass of a digital tower baby.

On a side note, I wonder if I could roast marshmallows with the amount of heat these next consoles would generate.

I have my current Xbox one X running through my main centre monitor for the PC via a 4K HDMi splitter...since I spend all my time in the Mole cave rather than in the living room. I bought the Xbox one X solely for RDR2...since I gave my last Xbone to a mate for his kids so needed a new one simply for RDR2.

The thing hasn't been fired up since RDR2 appeared on PC though...and with Ghosts of Tsushima coming out as yet another Sony exclusive I may yet be dragged into buying another console simply to play one game and nothing else... sigh

The easiest and cheapest option for me would be to find someone on the island who has a PS4 pro and is willing to swap for the Xbox one X...
