ANNOUNCEMENT Community Update July 2020

No ship horns, no buy.

No, honking the scanner is not adequate

Oh and bounty payments for crashing weddings, these criminal scum must be worth something. Looting their wedding gifts is not enough recompense.

I've been playing this game for almost 4 years now. I have always hated mining, still do. But you guys just cut the legs off of the DSSA, and anyone else who owns a Fleet Carrier. I have the credits for one, but don't have a use for it. You always say to the community " Play your way". How can they, if you keep " nerfing", or just blatantly destroying how someone plays your game. You have obviously lost touch with the community, or just don't care about it, one or the other. I hope you can pull your heads out of your a**es, before you cause this brilliant games death.

Thanks for the heads up :)

I've been waiting for something like this since about June 2016 so I'm not quite as 'excited' as the OP, but still, better late than never I suppose :)

100+ Devs have been working on something at the expense of the main game for a couple of years now. I am expecting a lot more features & benefits than has been shown so far.

I stated before I will get answers as when I can - there will be news about Odyssey starting from next month with a dev diary. It will continue. Once dates are confirmed the team will share them.
It's great that you take the initiative to tell us that there is information coming. There are a lot of people complaining about missing comunication, hence telling us that you have something planned is great to give us a heads up that we'll be starting to get some more tangible information soon.

Great stuff, keep the coms flowing. It's so much better than com-blackouts :)

Greetings Commanders,

With the announcement of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, we know you are excited and keen to learn more of whats to come.

Over the coming months we have some really exciting news and content to share with you. We will be kicking things off in August with a fantastic Developers Diary, which will show you some behind the scenes development of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey.

We can't wait to show you more and we are excited to share this epic journey with you.

Same.
I can't believe Odyssey will be limited to planet legs alone, two years and 100+ developers should be able to produce a little more then that imho.
I'm cautious but curious at the same time, ED has been my most favorite and played game thus far, I hope Odyssey will re-ignite my passion for this game again.
I'm not riding any hype train though and I do dread a very disappointing turn of vision regarding Fdev's focus on the future of ED.
I hope I'm wrong.

While announcement of the announcement is not ideal it's definitely better than past month silence.
Cheer up people and learn to enjoy the little things, this is Frontier after all, it's been like this for past five years or so.

After Patch 3, I have zero interest or support for Odyssey. I expect it will release with hundreds of bugs. It will of been better kept another year in development at the least.

If you cared about VR, you already know this is the case upfront.

This should be a sticky post somewhere.
Also, is that tied to Gamescom dates?
Seems likely, but a month is 4-5 weeks, so not a very specific timeframe.
If tied to Gamescom it seems easy enough to just say so.

August is an entire month.
How about just saying you'll release more info during Gamescom.
Seems easy enough.
FD comms, always announcing announcements, normally wonky, never clarifying the wonkiness, often just vanishing and ignoring pleas from the player base that want to give FD money. Good lord.

Frontier has a long history of exciting positive announcements without ever revealing any details or even screen shots.Look
them up seeing lots of 'fluff' and no substance. Info usually comes a week ot two before a major Beta release in a Livestream
showing off a specific item per Holo Me, FSS, Fleet Carriers etc. Even then some of the Devs in the past aren't quite up to date
with the item that they are showing off because many programmers in different departments designed it.

One perception...Game development in 2020 is a highly competitive market. Don't reveal anything until the last moment.
Another perception...David Braben has to approve everything before a release.
Another perception...The lawyers have to check it out. There were lawsuits over the ED games in the past who owned what.
Add your perception here...Probably wrong like mine.

My guess...Multiple Frontier departments adding to a complex game don't always have a meeting or when they do are not
always communicating well not having the right people in the meeting. There doesn't seem to be a QA department with ED
experts reviewing all the editions before release. Maybe a wrong guess but in the end as a player I see that Frontier cannot
accurately know how the update is going to work until after the Beta, then live, then fixing all the new bugs that are added
to the game. Rinse and repeat over the years.

Meanwhile if Frontier released details many would like that and many others would post negative threads hating the changes
to their game. Even with minor changes ED is personal to many players with easy ways for new players to get killed. The Devs
designed ED that way so player emotions are involved in most Forum posts. They seek answers. Try to provide them.

Major look at the threads with VR not being supported in Odyssey with no further reply from Frontier. Is it VR will no longer
work with the game or just won't work with a player walking around on a planet? I'm not sure that the Devs even knows
thus no response. Work on that as a primary response to all the VR players when you figure it out. They need an answer
being dedicated to the VR support of this game.

Then imagine the negative threads if the details didn't work? So maybe the week before info release works best.

What can a Community Manager do? Let's take a look at the Forum. Patch 3 messed up mining ANYTHING (never mind the
LTD SLF issue) and trading in Tritium. There are dozens of posts asking what happened with others who figured out what
happened and are not happy. I'm thinking many Forum users go to New Posts versus Staff/Developer posts to see what is
going on per a Frontier announcement. They do not always see a Dev reply in New Posts. So maybe an fixed alert for a
week in at the top of New Posts pointing to a new thread to the Staff/Developer Posts might get players to check it out. It's
a start maybe with a 'how to' using the Forum being more efficient communicating with the players.

Throw some ideas on the wall and see what sticks communicating with players on the Forum. It couldn't hurt.

Regards

Good grief no, don't ask the players! That's how we got into this mess in the first place.

Engineering: "My time is devalued if an outcome is potentially not always positive". Result: Power creep.
Mining: "All these tools are way too hard to use and I still don't make a lot of money". Result: Insane cr/hour opportunities.
Trading: "It's too hard, please let us use APIs and keep prices less fluctuating". Result: Insane cr/hour for months.
Fleet Carriers: "They are too slow and expensive and can't make money in deep space". Result: Indestructible persistent assets that wreak havoc on everything related to the BGS.

No, players as hive minds are dumb. Keep them out of game development.

I totally agree don't ask the players and my post had nothing to do with this. Just more efficient ways of communicating Frontier Dev posts and answering a few important questions such as VR if and when the Devs figure it out. Who knows when that will happen.

I realise that FPS in VR is typically awful, but you can NOT lose the incredible immersion of in-cockpit VR. PLEASE keep in-cockpit VR at a minimum. Drop us out to flat screen for the FPS elements if need be. Being exclusively a VR player, I can not go back to flat screen play so ODYSSEY, no matter what it adds to the game, is simply not an option. I will continue to play exclusively Horizons if Odyssey drops VR support.

There would be 0 reason to take VR away from the Space flying. Its already implemented. Odyssey might work like Horizons, where you can't get out of the SRV/ship unless you own the expansion. Hence VR would be everywhere except the out of pilot seat experience.

Bro, come over to the retirement ho^H... erm... casual side, we have tea & biscuits and play NMS for fun and DCS for tryharding ;-) The nice thing about self-imposed retirement is that unlike the real retirement you can come back from it if EDO rises like a supernova and shines even brighter. Or, if it totally whitedwarfs and stays there, you'll be already eating biscuits and sipping tea in peace. The war is over for now, Nuke :)

Its never over! Nevah! grips bloodied dog tags
