Unpopular opinion: Odyssey should introduce personal teleporters

Ian skippy has been playing no mans sky.. heh heh heh.

Well we have them now, fleet carriers. Just a bit overblown and including the ship transfer delay everyone loves. Ignoring the practicality, if you want to use ship transfers to never travel again, it almost works, and is very satisfying.

No mans sky teleports have the same problem as elite though.. they take forever.. guessing some of that is loading, but its so long it feels like they're making an experience out of it?
I had to look up no man's sky today. I've seen it referenced occassionally and more frequent the last couple days. While it does look interesting from a cartooning aspect, I prefer this more just based on looks alone. I dunno. I wonder how often in their whatever forums, do people bring up elite? I find it amusing.

You'll get used to seeing it rolled out every second thread its like Godwins law but for nerds.
That gave me a chuckle.. What is SC? obviously a competitor game. Don't get me wrong, I have no intents on bashing those games. I am sure they're fun. I kick my self in the azz for missing this one for years. Slipping in my old age to let this slide by without noticing.

Yeah that's a very common reaction to no man's sky from elite players. I have to admit as much as i try i haven't gotten over it myself. But if you persever to the point you get comfortable with the gameplay, its pretty educational for what "could have been". It took me about a dozen restarts over a few years so not saying its easy. Its not just a cartoon, its a distasteful one. Over the top and cute. Very small doses.

The game / play basically is elite in the imaginary scenario that it was fully baked. That's it really. Pop up a list of your favourite things to do in elite, and the things you wish it did, and start checking them off.

EDIT: No mans sky has exactly the feature that's being requested in the OP.

As I noted, I'm sure it's fun. For me no reason to really knock it. Aesthetically it looks ok. Even watched a couple youtube videos. Looked to me like ESO in space. I disliked ESO for what it wasn't and what it should be

I have pretty much all major space games, see no reason to pick just one. :) Btw, did you install NMS on a fast SSD? Teleports should be a matter of seconds.

NMS is more of a resource gathering/crafting game in a 60-70s pulp novel sci fi settings, leaning heavily on procedural generation with no need for realism. I like playing it when I am sick, as it is a mellow experience and it is updated so often that playing it every 6 months or so means its a new experience every time.

Well it's a mixed bag. You know, I play games like Fallout and Skyrim the same way I am forced to here, without fast travel (teleport). I just try to roleplay as much as possible. As boring as it maybe and perhaps yes "I suffered so you should suffer too" is fine by me- it is a simulator. While I do understand some mechanics have been made luxurious i.e. dying and respawning, it wouldn't be much of a game if you died and out 50 or whatever currency, end of story. Honestly I don't see it changing so it doesn't make a lick of difference. But me, my opinion is no. As another pointed out, not up for debate just my .02 credits

Oddly enough I dont use fast travel in Bethesda games either. Don't even run unless I have to!

The prospect of literally 30hrs of hyperjump loading screens to go back is on another level though... :/

Look at the Steam numbers. Making the game harder means fewer people buy it. Telling FDev to go back to making a niche game is pointless. May as well just embrace it.
Like i always say... a measure of popularity is not synonymous with quality... unless you want to start calling McDonalds "fine dining" because it fetches more gross sales than the local 5-star restaurant.

For the obvious reasons that pretty much every other game has them. It can be implemented easily; when docket at a station you can teleport to any other station with a shipyard you have previously visited. Only your fleshy self is teleported, not your ship, so you either need to go to a station where you left another ship, buy a new one or have one send over. This way traveling to somewhere is still rewarded (by unlocking the 'fast travel point') and you can participate in fun events elsewhere. I know some will argue that having fun isn't realistic or immersive, but I'm willing to make that sacrfice. :p

no dude, this will ruin the peace on colonia

I think the guy behind Age of Conan used the analog of the AoC experience being like a fine steak and wine dinner, while competitor World of Warcraft was supposed to be the Happy Meal experience. I tend to agree, but the pure popularity numbers side with WoW in that case.

If FD wants as large a market share as possible, they will have to cater to the instant gratification crowd. If they wanted to be pioneers, on the other hand, they should scale back their bottom line expectations a bit and go for brownie points with us elitists instead.

So Buck Rogers in the 25th Century? It's no good if it don't have a Twiki.

Oh I totally agree - but it's been clear over the last 3 years that FDev have decided to take the McDonalds route. I expect 🤑dyssey to deliver a basic FPS with huge, low-risk rewards and plenty of 'progression'. Nothing challenging or particularly high risk.

Hey, people don't want to travel through space in a space game! Why on earth would anybody want to spend time there?!

But you have to admit the actual experience of traveling to Colonia is pretty crappy. It's not elite, hardcore, sophisticated, challenging or any such thing. It's just a single button you press thousands of times.

I am all for improving this part by adding exciting, meaningful gameplay. But what are the odds of that? If we can't improve the trdium, best to optionally remove it.

It depends entirely on how you travel. If you treat the trip to Colonia as a commute then it will be dull. You can however explore along the way, stop at the way stations, take along some passengers for a bit of extra income, or just neutron jump for a somewhat shortish experience.

Even if we had more to actually do along the way in the form of exploration stuff to do or some sort of navigator's challenge for the hyperspace bit, just travelling will always be boring. And when it isn't, people will very likely complain that whatever is added to make it fun becomes another time sink and/or unnecessary busywork.

Just think about the whinge in this forum, if we had the Witchspace ambushes of yore in this game, or hyperdrive malfunctions that would send us to somewhere completely different from where we were going...
