What can a Fleet Carrier add to the Game?

Best addition to the game since 2.0. After 5 years, I can finally set off exploring the galaxy like a Captain Kirk, which is all I ever cared about. Odyssey will most likely make this even better.

Now if we could go back to the days when fuelling wouldn't cost almost 1 billion credits, that would be great.

If we can have a passenger lounge / stay-in units. So you can collect as many long distance passengers (around similar target destination) and passenger missions can be very lucrative. And you can switch ship to mine Tritium when needed.

Same here, I love my FC as a mobile base. It's now so easy to switch between different activities: Helping the AXI with their Art of War CG? One jump and I am in the Pleiades and in my AX Krait. A friend of me needs a helping hand? One jump and I'm back in the bubble, in a completely different ship and can help him out with some bounty hunting, cargo mission etc. No more 20 jumps to Shinrarta, jumping into a new ship (maybe even refitting it for a different activity) and then 15 more jumps to where I actually wanted to be an hour ago. It just makes my overall gaming experience in Elite so much more fun

I also love the social aspect of them. I have a few noob friends who only just started the game a couple of weeks ago. Most are still flying Cobras and Vipers, so our plan is that I'll take them along for a Guardian tour and a short exploration trip next week or so. I already helped one of them out with some spare Meta Alloys I had on my FC, so he could unlock his first Engineer without the tedious journey to the Pleiades and back again.

Fleet Carriers made me redesign most of my fleet layout. I'm making more specialized ships, now that jump range, repairs, support, changing ships etc, are so different.

So combat ships become more dedicated, since they won't be needing big jump ranges, frame shift boosters, fuel scoops etc any more.

Trading ships too, less defense, more cargo space now. Converted a shieldless T9 to the ultimate mass freighter.

My exploring ships are getting lighter. With Dssa carriers everywhere, no need to have 4 srvs or 2 afmus onboard. My fav exploring ship is again the Asp Explorer.

Bgs is a lot different, easier to manipulate, I can flip systems with minimal effort using the carrier as a base.

Still haven't gone exploring with it. Hopefully tritium will be available soon again in less than a billion per trip..

Overall, despite upkeep which I dislike, carriers have been fun, an update that greatly enhanced the game for me. Might change my mind though if credit making gets severely nerfed and carriers expenses remain the same. Them being mobile is vital.

Some may say that Fleet Carriers have made things a bit too easy. That maybe they cheapen the experience and struggle that most veteran Commanders have endured during the game's slow trek to it's current iteration. And I can see how they may feel that way. Nevertheless, I can't help but enjoy this streamlined experience they offer and I hope they continue to expand on them and add more mechanics to Fleet Carriers, making them less like mobile station while adding more personal touches.
I'm partially in the "they make things too easy" boat, at least in the Bubble. That's why I've taken a different approach, where I split my fleet, with my all-purpose mission runner, my top combat ship, and my top cargo hauler & passenger ships remaining in the Bubble. My second "fleet" was built / customized with fleet carrier based exploration in mind. My intent to is to leave my carrier in deep space, flying between it and the Bubble "the old fashioned way" as required. This way my experience in the Bubble remains "challenging" (based on my own criteria), but I also have all the benefits of a fleet carrier for exploration, which has infused this part of the game with new life.

But I do agree with you about convenience vs. ease. When I was hauling endless amounts of Tritium, I installed an advanced docking computer on my T9 for convenience. Thing is, I grew to enjoy having it so much that I actually missed it when I switched to my other ships! People be like, "This is a game about flying spaceships, so you should fly your spaceship!" but sometimes I just want to be Kirk / Picard and say, "Make it so!" and sit back in my command chair and enjoy the view. I can see why people enjoy fleet carriers for a similar reason. In fact, I kinda wish FCs had even more automation, allowing us to feel like we've progressed from being the Ensign who flies the ship to the Captain who gives orders for others to perform.

All the answers seem top be from people that bought a FC. So here is the perspective from someone who doesn't own a FC but has used them.

First I thought FC's will be useless and I would still say that a lot of things these are for can be done in different ways. But than again. We can go to Beagle Point with an unengineered ASP Scout.

The first time I was very happy that a FC was nearby was out in the black and hit a rock or something like that and my hull was down to 30 %. I still had to travel several thousand ligtyears and I don't caryy repair limpets. Before FC's I would just have continued. 30 % hull is plenty.
But at that time parts of the DSSA had been deployed already. And it turned out that CMDR Icetuuth and his (her?) Galactic Unity was just 40 jumps away (or so).

Beside the fact that I could repair my Kassiopeia was I very surprised that I liked the (more or less imagined) social aspect of it. I never needed company on my travels before but after a couple of weeks out there, it actually is nice to see another living soul … because after a while my peduncle tree starts talking back to me but the conversarions are rather simple, like "Do you remember the M class star from a while back" or "don't you agree that the sound of this gas giant is very similar to the one we've scanned some time ago … you know, the one with the stripes" … (yes, that part was shamelessly copied from the original post in another thread :p ).

So here the FCs add in the form of the DSSA an important new element to the game. I think more commanders might want to try exploring into the far-far-away.
The DSSA could also be supported with a "shuttle" service. Several FCs that just go from one DSSA point to the next and in a rundtrip to the bubble, for explorers that got space madness and want to get home without using the Suicidewinder.

And yes, In my opinion that is proper exploring, too! Forget all the crap talk about "real explorers"! Just get out there!

The second time happened today. I'm doing missions to increase my standing with the factions in Colonia. Before I payed them, did passenger and data delivery missions and source and return missions. I don't do combat missions. That is just not the pilot I am. A while back I did mining missions but these take too much time.
But sometimes all missions a faction has are combat or mining missions. So I'm waiting and waiting for a "pay me 1 Million credits"-"mission" to increase my reputation with them just a tiny bit.
And here the FCs come now. The sell stuff that can be mined but is NOT sold at regular stations!

THAT IS AWESOME … and makes total sense! Finally a market for all these materials that float around in the belts.

So a FC is parked around at belts, miners carry (regular) material from the belt to the FC and a transporter carries them to the persons in need.

I know, if one JUST wants to make as much credits as possible that doesn't make sense. But for somebody that just wants to play for an hour, do some missions, feel like a space-trucker and than carry on with RL this is perfect :)

So long story short: FCs can contribute game elements that were lacking so far and that make total sense. BUT I admit that this may require some kind of "relaxed" perspective on the game … maybe some "role-play" as I wrote above in which a commander imagines to be a space pilot with a story (even if it is just a tiny bit in the back if her (or his) head … like me) and it doesn't work with the "I need end-game stuff now and complain afterwards that the game has no content" crowd … be honest, a game that has hundreds or thousands of hours of playtime is not really lacking content … even if the content comes from other players (DSSA, expeditions, BGS, etc. pp.) or from yourself (said own pilot story) and not from FDev, it is still content.

... but sometimes I just want to be Kirk / Picard and say, "Make it so!" and sit back in my command chair and enjoy the view.

Advanced docking computer with an HCS VoicePack is what you need.

“Number one, take us out.” Then sit back and let your crew do the work.

I seriously doubt I'll ever prioritise this game nearly enough to ever own one of my own (had I kept playing as much as I did in year one then that'd be different) but that doesn't stop me thinking they're a solid addition to the game.

It's subjective that they could be better (although I've always been of the state of mind that literally anything "can be better") and I really think that threads like this needn't be mutually exclusive to constructive feedback threads about the feature but even just knowing they exist enhances the feeling of the galaxy as a living environment.

For me they're fantastic. I love exploring but my time is very limited. Working from home I can spend 60 seconds every now and again setting a new point for the Carrier and then get on with work. Seriously, without any effort and hardly any time I've travelled the scenic route to Sag A, then Colonia to refuel, then up to Beagle Point where I'm currently 8K short with limited Trit. Once the game is fixed I intend to fly from point to point, exploring and refuelling for a few weeks when I get to my destinations.

I also love the fact that other explorers deep in the black can come and get assistance and a decent beer from my rig.

Fleet carriers don't add anything that I want, and the things they do add are tedious, time consuming, expensive and pretty boring. Even the jump range is underwhelming.

They could have been so amazing, and we got giant space turds.*

This opinion is not coming from an normal person, so feel free to completely ignore it.

If some here get their wishes, i would wonder why they might even be bothered to get up in the morning, let alone fly a spaceship.

Thread is still primarilly about things being easier. What about costs/ crew?
Pre-bug mining/trading?
Minor inconvenience or earn it?
Player interaction is a positive though for me.

Agree Bgs would be easier, bad for non-fc but anyone powerplay? I'd think it would be much easier...?

Fleet carriers, Hmmm

Honestly I think what people wanted was a capital size ship transporter that could be piloted. What they got however were "movable" space stations.

Am I alone in raising an eyebrow at that comment, highlighting, once again, the balance FD failed to create in the ED economy & income (let alone PvE and PvP combat balance)?
To be fair, not every player looks at the "balance", "economy" and "income" in the game let alone whether or not Fleet Carriers did anything for or against it. I'm just enjoying having a great new ship to play with that extends what I personally like to do in what I consider to be a great game.

I doubt that you are alone in your opinion, but it is not the opinion of everyone in my opinion :)
