The Buckyball Racing Club presents: Keys to the Carrier (18th - 26th July 3306)

Thanks, for the link.(y)
I did watch his stream a few days ago and as a result I tried the missiles. For some reason they did zero damage. Probably I miss something bc it's the first time ever I used them. I'll figure it out at some point.
That's what I like so much about Elite. There's always something new to learn.
You need to engineer them with the Overload Munitions experimantal effect to turn parts of the damage into thermal to be able to effect the beacon. The type of engineering itself matters less for this, I used lightweight.

As well as what Alex said also: find beacons close to the star, minimise the number of jumps between them with route/ship/loadout/synthesis, there are faster/slower ways to use the missiles, and if you haven't already watch Shaye's and AkenBosch's examples of how to supecruise quickly:

I spent more time planning than actually flying for this race (I enjoy it :) ), but Shaye/Aken/others are faster pilots so I'm sure the times will get lower before the day is done.

Or take out a type 9 ;) I ran out of time to take my corvette round :/
Edit: the while point is to have fun, whatever that looks like for you o7
Oh, I have a lot of fun 😁
Sorry, didn't mean to sound frustrated.
Thanks for the hints and links. The gravitic breaking is impressively performed. I guess, I'll never use the '75 %-throttle' again.
I also spent some time in planning, finding the right systems to approach. It seems, only one system was available for me with the beacon closer than 500 ls...well, without doing long trips to the bubble to engineer/buy equipment.
In this challenge I gathered a lot of experience which will come handy for other races. I definetly will participate in future races!

There is indeed! We're fond of saying your learn something new in every race (and this is our 75th) but it is genuinely true! So I think the deal with the missiles was that they need the Overload Munitions special engineering effect on them so that the damage is partially thermal. I don't know if @Captain-MD wanted to comment further on whether I've got that right or not (or perhaps he'd prefer to wait until the race is safely over before sharing the best tips!).

Edit: whoops - seems I was ninja'd by Shaye anyway!

What a pity. I wanted to make the run with my cargo Python but had to quit game mid-course/mid-space.
Does anybody know when the carrier heads back to the bubble? I really would prefer not to be lost so far out in that bucket.

If you just park on KEYS CUT WHILE-U-WAIT I believe it's @CMDR Kai Zen's intention to take the carrier back to Anyanwu (or nearby) almost immediately after the race.

Well I missed a couple of days out towards the end of the week and I was overtaken by some very impressive times in the regulation class. I did manage to try a couple of runs yesterday but I just couldn't break that 20 minute barrier, which was a bit of a shame. I'll wait for the final scoreboard update before giving out congratulations to competitors, but a huge thanks to Alec for organising this race.

It's been a really fun, very interesting race. It's brought a few new things to the table and I thought that the fact I've only ever used limpets while mining and manual scooping everywhere else might have helped me, and for a while it dd :) Awesome work.

I would imagine that everyone in the regulation class went for the same three systems, which were the closest to the start/finish line, but it will be interesting to see if anyone in Unlimited broadened their horizons a bit.

Just an FYI, I'll be leaving around 17:00 game time (possibly a little later, but won't be earlier). Not sure on destination, but it will be somewhere in the bubble. Possibly near Cubeo as I really should go and earn some upkeep for my FC.
Thanks for the heads-up. I was surprised to see this morning that @CMDR Kai Zen's FC was still at it's place. So I parked there quickly before work. Soon and without any further travelling time I will be able to pick up my little hamster's work for TDW. 🐹
Still, I highly appreciate your offer for the lift.

Thinking about it, that gives me an excuse to go and pick up some weapon/module/ship blueprints. So maybe I'll hang around the Guardian sites for a couple more days. :)

They think it's all over? It is now! Here we go folks, scoreboard #10 - the final scoreboard of the race.

So first of all the final submissions.

Cmdr Ray O'Co has clearly been bitten by the Bucky-bug and came back for more, achieving a personal goal to break the 20 minute barrier and finished in a terrific 9th place with an Unlimited run time of 19 mins 24 secs. Awesome racing sir, we look forward to seeing you in the next one.

Then a further improvement to Edelgard Von Rhein's Vulture run, switching to class 3 gimballed beams on the "ShattenJaeger" to finish in 19 mins and 9 seconds, just 5 mins behind their 8th place Imperial Eagle.

Next and a surprise ship entry, Aken B. turns up unashamedly flying an Asp Scout named "Comatose Ferret" and finished 5th with a superb run of 18 mins 21 secs.

Just three seconds ahead of that, Cmdr Darplata94 also slams into the top 10 on the final day of racing in an Imperial Courier named "Proof of Concept". Using class 2 railguns, he finishes with a superb time of 18 mins 18 sec to takes 4th place at the last minute!

Another last day top 10 entry from Cmdr Inodoro Pereyra flying a Sidey named "Where are the keys!". Finishing just 3 seconds behind Sulu's iCourier, a final time of 20 mins 11 seconds is good enough to take 10th place.

Next and it's the same ship but, with a switch to thermal damage missiles, Cmdr Crank Larson has renamed the Imperial Courier to "Demolition Boulevard", broken the 19 minute barrier and finished in a very respectable 7th place with a time of 18 mins 35 seconds.

A warm welcome to Buckyball Racing to Cmdr alterNERDtive. Choosing to fly in regulation Hauler, he takes the top newcomer spot in that class with a time of 23 mins 39 secs for 7th place. Bravo and hopefully we'll see you again in future races.

And lastly, Cmdr JCB Digger returns with "No Brakes", shaves 10 seconds off the previous run and finishes 11th with a time of 20 mins and 37 seconds. Glad you had fun sir!

And so we come to our winners. First in Regulation Hauler ...

In 3rd place Cmdr Elastul Ma'fer. An early lead in this class, alas time and stiff competition prevented the Vespa Manadarinia from holding onto 1st or from breaking that darn 20 minute barrier. Better luck next time Ozric!

In 2nd place a brilliant run from Cmdr Captain-MD, all done while similtaneously livestreaming! Congratulations (and a twitch stream well worth subscribing too).

And in 1st place, with a superb time of 19 mins 11 secs (over 30 seconds faster than 2nd place), it's a massive congratulations to Cmdr Sgurr, definitely one to watch out for in future Buckyball Races!

And now Unlimited class ...

In 3rd place it's Captain-MD again, who showed us the way with highly effective thermal damaging missiles on an Imperial Eagle. An awesome time of 17 mins and 38 secs. Bravo and thanks for taking part!

In 2nd place Cmdr Sgurr again (on points probably our strongest competitor in the race). Over 2 minutes faster flying an Imperial Courier named "Vision Thing", Sgurr breaks the 16 minute barrier in a time of 15 mins 23 secs. Congratulations!

And finally, in 1st place, our reigning Buckyball champion on seemingly unbeatable form recently - it's Cmdr Shaye Blackwood! Flying the "Arrow" Viper and the only competitor to do the circuit in under 15 minutes (just) - a round of applause I think for a true champion (and can I also just say that, having claimed victory here Shaye then flew back to the bubble last night in time for the first round of the Elite Racers 8WD SRV endurance rally and completely owned the number one spot in a field of 13 other drivers - just incredible).

Oh, and the final total? Well apparently you lot managed to collect 700 keys!!! That represents over 233 separate attempts at the race. Frankly I'm astounded (and somewhat shocked) at the shear amount of endeavour that this race has provoked (and thank god not all those attempts resulted in a submission for me to check ... I had 69 submissions in total).

Thank you all for taking part and we look forward to seeing you in our next race - "Real Men Race In Lederhosen" - which will be taking place some time in August.

o7 and fly fast commanders!
