IGN article stating Odyssey is NOT the final update to elite

Main reason I'm posting this is it seemingly didn't get caught by our supersleuth @StuartGT, and it might otherwise have gotten swept aside amidst the hype from the dev diary and the additional stream in the evening, and there's been some chatter on here wondering if Odyssey is the end of an epic journey for elite?

Well... according to this article, it's not the final update for elite, instead Odyssey is only putting the framework in place for future updates.

Good catch. 100+ developers will have to go silent again, because they've been commissioned for Odyssey part 2.

I have suspected for a long time that FDev intends to use Odyssey to effectively rebrand and re-launch Elite.

Consider that Odyssey will have upgraded graphics and overlapping mechanics with Star Citizen and No Man’s Sky. These are some of the biggest names in space sims, but all three titles haven’t really lived up to their hype (personally, my partner gave up NMS after like three months. I think I only survived three days.)

FDev may see weakness in its competitors, and Odyssey could be an attempt to make another grab at the market and bring in new players.

I have no idea how successful they’ll be, though. The fact that Odyssey won’t be upgraded for new consoles may suggest that they don’t see much growth potential in Xbox and Playstation, at the least.

It would be nice if Odyssey is not the end of the road. I'll believe it when I see it. I will say that it certainly looks like Odyssey is making a grab for the NMS players. The scanning tool is right in line.

I just hope they allow us to turn that horrible view bob off! I hate view bob! I always looks fake, and we as humans just don't see the world that way.

Something I have suspected, they wouldn't do major rework of engine and longish development for quick cash in before leaving game to wither away.

"putting the framework in place for future updates"

Its like being in a time machine and going back to version 1.0 again. Less bone and more meat please, either that or confirm features in versions prior are going to get love after all these years.
Personally, I'd prefer waiting and playing 2.0 for the time being to see how it all sorts itself out in long run.

Updates, future releases, new features.. Sure, it all sounds good. I'll wait and see. Do I want more ? Space Legs ? Ship interiors ( silly, but I want it ) ? GALNet back ? CG's ? Of course I want those things and a few dozen others. We all want MORE.

In the meantime, I can still play a game I have enjoyed for years.. literally.. YEARS. That's about it for me. It has it's issues, but I can still take my ship out end enjoy it for the most part. I'm not going to freak out over what might happen, or could happen, or should have happened.

I am going to wait and see what they deliver. If it's crap, I can still play what I have. If it's good, I can buy it. If it's mediocre.. I'll probably buy it on a drunken whim late some random Saturday night next May..

I never assumed it was? Who did?

10 year project started in 2014, end date is 2024 and thats just the base game. After that is when it gets built on.
Started in 2012, if you count the Kickstarter and pre-release development as part of the project plan, which would put "completion" in 2022.

Of course, it's fairly clear that a) the original project plan went out the window sometime around Engineers and b) they're clearly going to keep developing it so long as it stays long-term profitable to do so, even if they do reach the end of the original roadmap.

Nice find.
I find it interesting when they say it's designed to operate 'within' the existing game, as well as add ndw things.
Could this mean that all the existing non-landable settlements in bubble systems(horizon moons) will be able to be interacted with, by way of missions/trading and maybe even affect the bgs?
