Pick 12 animals

As we approach the first anniversary of the game there are varied opinions on what Frontier might or might not have planned to mark the occasion.

If you had an anniversary pack with twelve species, symbolising a year, what would you pick?

I would go with a geographic breakdown with two species from North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australasia:

  • Moose
  • Puma
  • Capybara
  • Andean bear
  • White rhino
  • Meerkat
  • Wolverine
  • Alpine ibex
  • Red-crowned crane
  • Malayan tapir
  • Emu
  • Tasmanian devil

Could easily pick 12 just from 1 continent - Like the idea of 2 species per continent, so I'm going to follow your lead.

1 - Meerkat (Africa)
2 - White Rhino (Africa)
3 - Capybara (SA)
4 - Tamarin (SA)
5 - Alligator (NA)
6 - Prairie Dogs (NA)
7 - European Badger (Europe)
8 - Alpine Ibex (Europe)
9 - Siamang (Asia)
10 - Yak (Asia)
11 - Australian Pelican (Australia)
12 - Wombat (Australia)

So not necessarily a list of animals you want to see most in the game? This is a unique way to do it. Some will be included due to them being highly requested and "popular" or common zoo animals and some due to diversity. I think I'm going to go with a seasonal theme

Summer: Meerkat, Black Rhino, Honey Badger
Fall: American Black Bear, Red Fox, Barn Owl
Winter: King Penguin, Wolverine, Moose
Spring: Marabou Stork, Capybara, Rocky Mountain Goat

However you wish to divide it but yes, rather than your own top twelve, which twelve would you pick as a broad mix which might appeal to people. A seasonal theme is a great way to approach it.

Interesting idea. I think I'll take a different approach. If we're choosing twelve animals, I'll pick nine habitat animals and three exhibit animals:

- Tasmanian devil.
- Emu.
- Frill-necked lizard (E).
- Alpine ibex.
- Southern white rhinoceros.
- Meerkat.
- African rock python (E).
- Binturong.
- Northern white-cheeked gibbon.
- Clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa).
- Capybara.
- Emerald tree boa (E).

A mix of popularly requested animals, and animals that people have felt were 'missing' from the DLC's, and some exhibit animals to bring certain themes together more closely.

The gibbon is really the only one I'm not sure about. While it is popularly requested and an animal that many of us feel is missing from the game, based on the range of movement ascribed to the orangutan it's possible that brachiation (the primary mode of transport for gibbons) isn't something Frontier can do. If we can't have the gibbon, my next suggestion would of course be the Asian small-clawed otter (even without underwater navigation).

If I could pick 12 I’d pick:
1) Southern White Rhino
2) Otter (any species)
3) Penguin ( any species)
4) Siamang
5) Meerkat
6) Malayan Sun Bear
7) Hamadryas Baboon
8) Moose
9) West Indian River Manatee
10) Eurasian Lynx
11) Bald Eagle
12) Mountain Lion ( any subspecies)
I feel like these twelve animals would round the roster out a little and change the game through animation sets or even if the animations never came most are still highly requested and would offer something unique. One wildcard I left out would either be a beaver or platypus. Although I’d much rather have the beaver.

6. Black howler monkey
7. Ocelot
8. Serval

I wholeheartedly agree with this list. Each species is different from each other and helps fill different shaped holes in the current roster. The only thing I would really change is maybe replacing the Andean bear with the Maned wolf, but that's about it. Overall, you did a good job.

Seeing a lot of repeat favorites! This is becoming a really good resource for Frontier, if they look at it. ;) Just off the top of my head... I decided to choose animals that are somewhat less likely to get into future packs, because their continent has already been covered, or there's just a LOT of ground to cover in the future (like Asia).

Amur Leopard
Binturong
Tasmanian Devil
Axis or Sika Deer
Indian Langur
Sloth
Prehensile-tailed Porcupine
Arctic Fox
Tree Kangaroo
Emu
Capybara
any kind of crane, stork, or pelican

Was thinking of penguins and pinnipeds, but MAYBE we'll get an Antarctica / tundra and ice / coastal pack for those...

I'm going to go with a complex system that has nowt to do with realism, fair division between animal families or geographic spread, ease of keeping in captivity or difference to the existing animals in game or even limitations with flying / swimming etc. After a long and arduous selection process of me thinking about this for 2 minutes... I went with animals I just really like!

1. Flying fox / fruitbat species
2. Gibbon (honestly they are all gorgeous so species doesn't bother me)
3. Eurasian Otter (i know short-claw is more common but hey ho)
4. Common Genet (soft spot for these ever since we saw one in a camera trap literally the night after we placed it down)
5. Sun Bear
6. Griffin Vulture (sub-species optional)
7. Caracal (although I'd settle for another small cat)
8. Cara Cara (if we're going with birds lets get some with some personality!)
9. Sloth
10. Leopard Seal (I know that this isn't very realistic but they are just gorgeous and fierce as anything)
11. Fire Salamander (I once nearly stepped on about 10 on a dark evening walking to the place we were staying and they are just such weird beasts)
12. Eurasian Eagle Owl (although if they went with a large owl a Great Grey or a Snowy Owl would also be great)
