Can't plot a route?

I'm trying to get to Hip 36601 but the computer can't find a route there. What gives? Do i lack jum range or something? Also, how much jump range should i get from a DBX equiped for exploration and materials harvesting?

1. check your filters, don't filter the route
2. make sure you don't have synthesis applied
3. make sure you are not in economic routeplotting
4. try to plot a shorter route - if that is possible, check for permits in your direction

without engineering, you should get ~30ly from a DBE.

Witch Head nebula area, check for intervening permit locked regions. I don't know which direction you are approaching it from, but it's likely one of more permit locked regions lie between you and the star.

It's interesting how many people hit this - normally if I can plot a route I try places closer to where I am, until I find where the 'unplottable' starts, then look at the system I can't plot at. When it says 'Permit required' I have my reason and can move on. This even works when I accidentally chose Eco routing (normally I look at the route and say '1000 jumps! Hand on waitaminute').

It seems the more fashionable option is just to try the end point and give up without any investigation ...

those of us having played longer come from times when it wasn't posiible to plot 20k ly at once, so plotting shorter range in the general direction is "more natural". if you start now, there is absolutely no event which would lead to plotting "in the direction of", instead of putting in system name and plot. I'm not sure whether i would know of it, leaving the bubble first time.

Sure, but wouldn't you be curious? I can understand coming here to ask about the permits and why they are there, but it just seems weird to me that you'd just type in a system name, fail to plot and ask someone else what to do. OTOH I guess it could be 'post first, investigate next', so they probably realised the issue 5 minutes after posting :)

I'm still trying to figure out the problem and i think i will just go to the Road to riches route. Witch Head Nebula doesn't seem to be on the route but i can't tell for sure. I wonder if this is a jump range problem i only get about 25 ly out of dbx.

Stock DBX is around 17Ly - if you only add a 5A FSD you'll gave 33 Ly, so not sure what you've done there. Sure you're not in economy mode as they suggested?

What is "economy mode"? I know there is a setting for economical route plotting but how does that effect on jump range.

That certainly could explain the problem as i have 4A FSD. I outfitted the ship at Jameson's so i wonder how i managed to get something smaller than the best.

economical route plotting does not effect the jump range, but the maximum distance of route plotting (and your destination is too far for that) - as phongsalt said :)

Not having a ship with a range that can make it across a large system won't let you plot. Make sure your fuel tank is full prior to plotting also.

I'm starting to feel that i need to dust out my old trusty AspX for this run. I didn't have SRV bay on those days when i went to Rohini but It is a bigger ship so added weight should effect less than on DBX.

Or alternatively could someone direct me to a good location for materials collecting so i can get my FSD engineered?

I've never been able to successfully plot to HIP 36601 from my home system in Empire space (Saisiyat), even with a 45-50 ly jump range; I think it's the permit locked systems that get in the way of a successful routing. What I've had to do is plot a route in the general direction of HIP 36601 going up higher in the galactic plane and maybe a little "west" (a bit left when looking down on galmap), and do it in a couple of segments.

Edit: I think I also went there in my 20 ly courier at some point so I'm almost sure the issue is permit locked systems in the way.

I have decided that i use "Road to Riches" to plot the route. I wonder how far my Krait Phantom would jump with SRV?

generally, "all you need" is some wake scanner for wake scanning - you can do that while doing other stuff, or going to a busy station or tourist beacon. than go to high population systems in boom, scan nav beacon, and collect from high grade emission USS to trade in.
leaves you with raw materials ... anylanable with vulcanism and material polonium, map it with asurface scanner, go to the geo sites.
go to material traders to trade in.

but, as you have been to rohini, which is halfway to colonia, i'd say that will take you much longer, than doing the trip without engineering.

as @tetra says, it's the permit blocking you.

unengineered and stripped down krait phantomm bit more than asp, bit less than a DBE, but much faster fuelscooping.
all of those ships have a class 5 fsd. as jumprange only depends on total mass and fsd (no hidden ship modifier contrary to shields for exampel), the dbe being the lightest and having smaller core modules jumps furthest - but fuelscooping speed make a kraitphantom faster over longer distances.
