Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

SQ42 going to be a while, I think
Chris Roberts:
You're not really asking about what is being worked on Squadron 42, you really just want to know when it will be done. The best answer for your question is Squadron 42 will be done when it is done, and will not be released just to make a date but instead once all the tech and content is finished, polished and it plays great. I am not willing to compromise making a game I believe in with all my heart and soul, and even though everyone (including me) wants Squadron 42 sooner than later, it would be doing a huge disservice to everyone working really hard on the project and all of you that are looking forward to it to deliver something that isn't great.

The new roadmap will show how we are doing towards that goal and as we get closer to the end it will be more accurate but it will never be a perfect crystal ball of the future as there is always a certain amount of unpredictability in game development, especially when the game is hugely ambitious and has a very high quality bar; Red Dead Redemption 2, Last of US 2 and now Cyberpunk have all taken a lot longer than originally communicated and those projects didn't even announce a release date until very deep into their production, when most of their tech had been resolved.

We still have a ways to go before we are in Beta, but everyone on Squadron 42 is working very hard to deliver something great.

Ooof.... if ever there is a phrase that should set off alarms bells it is someone telling you "[it] will be done when it is done "

Also, some other game devs didn't get things right, so its fine we didn't. Erm, no, not really Chris. Especially with your most open development ever thing. Especially 6 years later after saying how awesome SQ42 was going to be when it was so close to release, and then 5 years later announcing you scrapped all those awesome missions that were almost ready. And isn't it a shame somehow the AI code you must have had back in 2014 someone went missing and still doesn't exist today. You must have had working AI code in 2014 for the almost ready SQ42 right?

"We also communicate way more than any other developer or publisher than I am aware of in terms of work and progress on Star Citizen, which is the game “The Pledge” was referring to; "

Oh wow. That is a big one. The nerve to just go ahead and imply that SQ42 is absolved of The Pledge.

Just. Wow.

Adding arrogance to ignorance...you cant make this stuff up ^^

Wasnt SC and SQ42 originally a combo-package available for 1 payment of 1 AAA game? They only later decided to split SQ42 as a stand-alone title because they could milk their backers more isnt it? I mean I havent really seen anything so far that would justify splitting it. For SQ42 to be worth 35 or 45 bucks it needs to be as massive as SC...wait....LOL yeah so not much required ^^

If they actuallyl manage to get SC into beta, which means it ll be feature-complete at that point they ll easily buy themselves another 5-7 years of sucker-time to get fat on. And whoevers on that train then cant even demand more stuff because its beta....adding new features is done. Tho how are they going to get more money if they cant add more fantasy stuff anymore? Are lootboxes announed already? Even if not new skins are easy to make no?

How many times has Chris said that SQ42 has been in "greybox stage" now?

I guess SQ42 wasn't the game they needed backers funds for since there is no reason to not be open and communative about a game you kickstarted + crowdfunded for eight years and never once said "hey SQ42 isn't the game we're making with your cash so we don't need to talk about it with you" until suddenly now.

Maybe Chris got the money for SQ42 the same place he got the cash for his mansion.

Seems a bit scammy to say we're making a single player campaign and an open world MMO so need lots of cash for eight years before you turn around and tell everyone the deal. Almost a bit of a slight-of-hand trick, like having lots of companies and reflecting complaint cases as not being directed at the "right organisation" etc.

I guess by now the answer to that question is widely known, sadly.

The more interesting question would be how much money was pledged on the basis of those very optimistic statements, in each and every ocasion those were mentioned, only for those not to be delivered.

And how much money was pledged on the basis of any other of the myriad of similarly "optimistic" statements uttered over and over, over the past 8-9 years, only for them never to be delivered yet after all that time?

It is pretty funny though, this endless cycle of claiming things that are not true, years pass nothing comes of it, they repeat the same claims, more years pass and on and on it goes.

You would think people would have learned not to believe these claims and not to give more money. You would think reporters that keep hearing the same claims over and over in multiple interviews would clue in to ask "Have these claims not been made before? What happened there."

Nah, let's make it the first 1bn dollar funded game and most expensive unreleased anything, ever.

Official recap (basically a copy paste of my recap posted to Reddit ha!)

I own a Glaive. It has been a buggy mess since 3.5, nice that CIG was unaware. :ROFLMAO:

I was considering not going for the 50 player kills and just killing Glaives instead.
Is there a lot of anti-PvP "u r a gweefer" salt in the game chat with this event?

I have to say, I'm quite enjoying the ranting Roberts forum freestyle show instead of the usual cringey Chris "try to channel Steve Jobs" Citizencon.

Tomorrow will no doubt be another semi-impressive "smoke & mirrors" session with no release date designed for one purpose; campaign further income from people that have already paid for a game long ago. We'll see the usual foray of "faith restored" threads around reddit etc. no doubt the last we hear of SQ42 again for a while.

Then it will be Jan 2021 and I'll post another "This will be the year of Star Citizen in VR and on Linux" joke on one of these threads and we do the whole cycle for another glorious year.

Then again, now all these years later we know that when Chris said he "promised to treat backers with respect" he wasn't talking about SQ42 so it's ok I guess.
