Newcomer / Intro Suitable Combat ship For A Newbie.

So.. Here's where I am at the moment, (see link below) bought a Vulture and bunged a load of stuff in it as per sinsalo's
above example. Obviously as soon as I deploy the hardpoints the ship shuts down lots of other stuff and my air supply starts to die 😁 so I now need to adjust to suit. I'm out in my ASPX now to collect more mats for engineer upgrades. Mistake from me earlier in my posts when I listed engineers unlocked, I only have F. Farseer and E. Martuuk unlocked at the moment. I'm up to level 5 with Farseer but not started yet with Martuuk.

Regarding upgrades .. Is there any particular order which I should do things? I presume that my power plant needs to be number 1 priority but after that I'm open to advice. I'm not in any rush to use the Vulture yet and am happy to prepare it in readiness for combat in its current configuration. That said, if I've created myself a mountain of grinding to get it working, then I'll happily reduce the level/number of modules with a view to using it sooner and then steadily upgrade as time/patience allows.

Thanks everyone for your help up to now 👍🏼

I have tweaked your build slightly to get round the power issue, engineering is the other way to fix that.
One thing I have done is to adjust the module power priorities, high numbered modules are shut down first, then swapped in a multicannon and dropped the shield boosters down one grade until the power was enough.

...... A planetary vehicle hangar?

Missiles, really? Never tried that - or is this a base assault build?
I have Pack-hounds on mine and it is very good for assassination missions.

Basically, I was having a laugh. New players, can't fly the Cobra IV. :D

Thanks for the pointers everyone. I'll pay Felicity a visit regarding my power plant as I plenty of mats to sort that out. I'll also pay more attention to the module power priorities as that's something I still need to educate myself with. Common sense really though when you actually look at it. 👍🏼

I have to say that, reading this thread, I, like @Viscera, was going to suggest the Chieftain. It's amazing for an inexpensive ship. I've been having a lot of fun in it. I won't knock that recommendation at all but I have to admit that you CMDRs make me really want to try the Vulture now.

It sounds like small-ship fun! Have fun with it, @sinisalo!

Curious to know what op did.

and also, 400 million doesn’t really get you that far once you take outfitting and rebuy margins into account. Unless you’re the kind for whom the word savings has no meaning.

This is where I currently am.

I've done a few missions from Ray Gateway to eliminate known pirates and it's all gone without any issues. I'm now going to work through the engineer upgrades. Just starting on gaining reputation with Elvira Martyuuk. All of the travelling about to get that and the other engineers done will be done in my ASPX as it makes the job easier. 👍🏼

Am obviously still open to any suggestions where I might improve the build longer term when I get more resources to work with.

I would probably A rate the shield gen personally. And, if I'd I could, make it bi-weave.

MC /beam combo is good and will be more effective when you can engineer them. And when you do, put the corrosive experimental on the MC.

Agreed, but I think it's a matter of OP trying to stay within his PP's capacity without having to resort to too much fidgeting with the module priorities and having to turn them on and off, which I understand completely.

And, to be honest, good job on balancing everything to get just about every ounce of juice out of that PP, OP! (y)

To my previous comment, I actually do NOT recommend expensive ships for new players, at least not if there is a chance of PvP. Why? Because you'll be eating way bigger rebuys than if you use a cheaper ship to learn how to fly. Trust me, I've sent my share of CMDRs flying expensive ships to the rebuy screen while flying my humble Eagle. Heck, the entire cost of my Eagle (not rebuy, but actual cost new) is less than the rebuy of a single module on an FDL.

Looking pretty good for a non-engi build, I'd say. Not sure why you haven't stuffed another HRP in that empty Class 2 slot, though.
Just done, thanks for that, I left it in case I needed to add anything which I'd still need but had overlooked but I guess I can always switch stuff about if that comes about. 👍🏼

I agree, and a Vulture is about as expensive as I'd go for that learning experience. I'd put it this way: Don't go learning how to fight in a ship you don't have a couple dozen rebuys for after you're done kitting it out. And have a plan for quickly earning credits to buy more if you run low. Thankfully, in ED today, that's pretty easy.

But "learning to fly" in a ship that will clean you out in half a dozen rebuys is not a recipe for a good time. I generally won't put myself in harm's way unless a glance at the rebuy cost on the right panel at worst makes me go "meh, so what?". :)

My pleasure. Oh, and the obligatory comment: Ditch the Docking Computer and put something useful, like an extra MRP in that slot. I know, one of those "purist snob" guy comments ;) I fully understand the convenience of it, but when you're at the level where you feel confident flying your Vulture, docking will be so much second nature to you that you won't even think about it while you're doing it. Not to mention that at one point you'll probably want to land on a planet, and the DC doesn't help there.

But that's really minor. The ability to just turn it on and forget about the tedious docking procedure is really nice, so please don't take it as a "git gud" comment, because it is surely not intended that way. :)
