Astronomy / Space Mars to be Inhabited by humans in 10 years

I'd volunteer to go with my children. They would all be over 16 & finished school by then. Won't be any unemployment there for a good few generations.

On the other hand, it is a job to be done before the end of life, and will be a few people who will be able to replace you.
We can say to the rest of your life will be a miner.
I think that the purpose of traveling to other planets can be only one - to extract minerals, which are then sent to the ground. In any case, at the moment.

it would be a waste of fuel getting it up from the gravity well - we would be better served mining the asteroid field

Apart from spreading our wings and not being so over populus:

Terra-forming, farming, research, cooking, cleaning, sanitation, maintainence, policing, administration, transport, communications, education, planning, manufacturing, monitoring, data collection, data entry, programming, mechanics,
nursing, doctors, textiles, construction, entertainment, prostitution(yes I said it, and stand by it as a valued necessity. possibly even state controlled), security, chemistry, biology, physiotherapy, geology, waste disposal, mathematics, fuel processing, etc.

Could a Comet Hit Mars in 2014?
A recently discovered comet will make an uncomfortably-close planetary flyby next year — but this time it’s not Earth that’s in the cosmic crosshairs.
According to preliminary orbital prediction models, comet C/2013 A1 will buzz Mars on Oct. 19, 2014. The icy interloper is thought to originate from the Oort Cloud — a hypothetical region surrounding the solar system containing countless billions of cometary nuclei that were outcast from the primordial solar system billions of years ago.

whether its real or not, I just want to see some further space progression in my lifetime rather than seeing new reports of astronauts on the ISS testing the effects of chickens in zero G like that really makes any difference to science.

I do pray I get to hear the phrase "First baby born off of Earth."

An American business man is planning to send a couple to Mars within 5 years!

That is a tall order if you ask me. The guy isn't even a scientist, he's only a businessmen but he has been to the ISS paid for out of his own pocket.

He isn't planning a landing on the red planet, only a fly-by but I really don't think the guy has a clue of what is involved.

Lol I hear its a 6 month trip, one of the reasons it causes so many problems for sending people, cramped spaces, limited oxygen, limited food, the problem with becoming stir crazy and losing the plot must be an issue. Just look at the people on the big brother shows, first few days everyone loves eachother and all get on, towards the end they are at each others throats.

I do believe last year or the year before Russian astronauts underwent a years training locked within a confined reconstructed ship to see how they reacted so long in these extreme condition just to se eif it was possible for a team to last that long for the trip.

Until they perfect cryogenics or controlled coma situations this really could be a hard task to master

Someone mentioned Big Brother - They torture those people though, and they are unbalanced and hysterical to begin with usually. Not astronaut types.

The way I understand it is that this opportunity is a rare chance at a pretty much ballistic shot, minimum course changes, just shoot it there and it slingshots round and returns. Simply put.
The main problem is that there is nothing for the Humans to do - apart from be along for the ride and the science value of seeing what happens to them.
Personally I would be fine on this trip - just give me a good gaming computer and look after my life support.
This has been my life for a couple of extended periods anyway. :D
At my age most of the physical excersise joys are on a diminishing curve anyway
Zero G gaming for two years. Sounds great!

Not sure of the wisdom of sending a married couple though. Whatever the success of thier marriage has been based on it is unlikely to include enforced close confinement for 18 months.
who knows though. Enough studies have been done for them to be able to appropriately profile the crew I guess.

Wonder if there's any Golf courses there.

What will the latency be like for playing ED?

Should I pack my SCUBA gear?

May be when folks settle there they can be taxed (and retro taxed) for the Global warming that is currently taking place there in a sort of cap n trade venture?:D

Curiosity Discovers Environment Where Life Could have Thrived on Ancient Mars

After analyzing the first powder ever drilled from the interior of a Martian rock, NASA’s Curiosity rover discovered some of the key chemical ingredients necessary for life to have thrived on early Mars billions of years ago.
Curiosity has achieved her goal of discovering a habitable environment on the Red Planet, mission scientists reported today at a briefing held at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Data collected by Curiosity’s two analytical chemistry labs (SAM and CheMin) confirm that the gray powder collected from inside the sedimentary rock where the rover is exploring – near an ancient Martian stream bed – possesses a significant amount of phyllosilicate clay minerals; indicating an environment where Martian microbes could once have thrived in the distant past.
“We have found a habitable environment which is so benign and supportive of life that probably if this water was around, and you had been on the planet, you would have been able to drink it,” said John Grotzinger, the chief scientist for the Curiosity Mars Science Laboratory mission at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif.

well rather than inhabiting it, we should first of all look at getting water there, maybe starting off the atmosphere with some of our own water, and chemical reactions creating an ozone layer. Then in a couple of 1000 years we can go there and drink water.

there is water there in the poles they believe, but the atmosphere would have bigger problems (In fact it's one of the reasons why the atmosphere isn't there now...)

hehe n1 sab.

on my last post, its' why i also stated chemical reactions to release ozone and start helping to trap the atmosphere back.
